Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Tech has a lot of decisions to make in the early season.

Can this team win the WCHA with this set of forward lines?

1st
Pietila Kero Petan

2nd
D. Johnstone Khaira Heinonen

3rd
Furne Baltus J. Johnstone

4th
Eick Rix Sturos

With Vallis, Neville, and Gould rotating in on the third line or 4th line RW.
Trying to find ice time are Holmberg, Hietila, and Anderson.

I doubt Gould rotates. I'm looking for him to be more consistent as a sophomore and approxmiately double his output.

Also time for Furne to step it up for his senior year. He should have at least 30 pts.

I agree about Gould . . . I think he may surprise some people this year.

I'm slightly concerned about the D, but otherwise this team is set for a groundbreaking year. The only squad in the new WCHA with arguably more talent is Mankato, but as they say, championships aren't won on paper. The experience Tech will gain from their OOC schedule should give them a leg up going down the stretch.

BTW, we're in the late 5th round and neither Birks nor Jackson has been taken yet.

EDIT: Pittsburgh just drafted Birks, 164th overall.

EDIT 2: Jake Jackson goes 201st overall to San Jose.

So Michigan Tech adds two more to the list of drafted players. Dane Birks to Pittsburgh in the 6th round and Jake Jackson to San Jose in the 7th round. Surprised Birks lasted that long but I expected those two to get drafted. Should be interesting to see if they can keep it up. Now 3 years in a row with a player/recruit drafted.

Good to see WCHA guys drafted. It is good to see Jackson the Minnesota High School kid drafted.

another recruit who ultimately chose St. Cloud, Calumet's own Big Ben Storm. 6th round to Colorado.

Chris Dilks released his watch list for the 2014 draft and had future Husky Travis Brown as an 'A' prospect that he thinks could go in the top 3 rounds next year. I think you'll see at least two recruits drafted next with Hannoun also likely. Gillies and Redmond have a chance but that seems pretty slim.

I'm surprised Travis Brown is that high, I wouldn't have expected him to get that much exposure with where he came from. I suppose it is Chris Dilks, and he would have more of a chance of seeing Brown than many other people that would be putting together these kinds of lists.

Very true, Brown is more than likely going to be in the USHL this year and get out of Rogers HS, which will be good for exposure.

Gould showed nothing to knock J. Johnstone out of the lineup. He was expected to be a gunner, but had a rough first year. Hietila had a better year than Gould.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I agree Hietila had a better year than Gould, but I expect better things out of Gould and doubt he rotates very much. We'll see.

Recruit Jake Kauppila played in the NAHL last year, he tweeted he'll play for Trail in the BCHL this year. Is his brother Sam Kauppila?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Trail is a good place for Jake and yes Sam is his brother. I'm sure he's on Tech's radar as well as Joe Schuldt's younger brother, John.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Sorry for the double...as for Gould, he was a frosh, I'd expect Heitila to do better having been around the program for a year already. Gould will hopefully improve this year and show why he was worthy of a scholarship.

I liked Gould's play last year despite putting up lower numbers than expected. He reminds me a bit of Rix, another player that put up big points in juniors but hasn't translated that to college hockey. Both still made important contributions. I think we'll see big things from C.J. Eick. He put as many shots on net as Khaira last year and has some blazing speed. A little more upper body strength and he could be another Alex Petan. If Furne and Jake Johnstone step it up, the team will go far this year.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

It's widely known that Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, a.k.a. Johnny Football, completed his spring semester coursework online and did not attend any classes on campus. Does MTU offer any type of online courses to recruits so they can get a jumpstart on their academic program of choice before they get to Houghton? Or so those who've moved to the pros can continue and get closer to a degree?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I think Gould will be a good one, but the team has depth and will rotate to find out who plays when it is money time. I agree big years from J.Johnstone and Furne will help compete for the top spot.
To start the year I would think Davis and Gould would be traveling to the road games to start the season.
