Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Oh agreed, it's normal for rates to rise during special events, and I expected that. What I didn't expect was that the rate would rise to such a high level or that it would rise after I had already checked in.
yeah, that's a little shady right there. Don't suppose you happen to print out or you have an email that would have quoted you getting the cheaper rate on the room before? Might be enough to get them to give you some of your money back.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

We stayed at the Embassy Suites for our trip to Omaha to see Tech play. Who knows when the team will be back there in the future.

It's off-season so thought I'd mention the odd Michigan Tech mention yesterday on KFAN radio. They were interviewing Matt Cullen and they had an email question/statement from Nick Laurila, giving Matt a hard time about Nickleback. Matt Cullen shot back that doesn't Michigan Tech have Nickleback as their intro music. Odd that those guys seem to know each other!

I heard "Michigan Tech" and "Huskies" but I missed the context yesterday. Thanks!

Really 4? Any info on how many wore letters thru the years per team?

Official press releas on the captains. Pietila and Stebner will wear the Cs and Kero and Rix will wear the As.

Tech Hockey Names Captains for 2013-14

HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech hockey team today named its captains for the 2013-14 season. Junior forward Blake Pietila and senior defenseman Brad Stebner will serve as co-captains. Assistant captains will be junior forward Tanner Kero and senior forward Dennis Rix.

The four players were selected by their teammates. Stebner served as assistant captain a year ago. The other three will wear letters for the first time as Huskies.

"The team vote was consistent with the coaching staff's feeling on who our leaders are," said head coach Mel Pearson. "All four of them are solid picks. We will have strong core leadership as we begin play in the revamped WCHA."

Pietila (Brighton, Mich.) has played in 74 games as a Husky with 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 total points. He was named the Merv Youngs Award winner as team most valuable player last season after putting up 14-10=24 in 35 games.

Stebner, a two-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete, has appeared in 102 games over the last three seasons on Tech's blue line. The Fort McMurray, Alb., native owns 22 career points including a goal and 10 assists in 35 games a year ago.

Kero registered 24 points on 11 goals and 13 assists last season and was named the team's Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award winner. The Hancock, Mich., native has 40 points on 20 goals and 20 assists in 72 career games.

Rix (Grande Prairie, Alb.) was one of only six Huskies to play every game in 2012-13. He put up six goals and five assists to boost his career totals to 12-15=27 in 111 games. Rix earned the team's Rick Yeo Unsung Hero Award each of the last two seasons.

Michigan Tech will begin its 93rd season of intercollegiate hockey in little more than 90 days. The Huskies open with Laurentian on Oct. 5.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

A buddy of mine at Ford is looking for someone with a 4 year engineering degree. He has 6 openings. One is an industrial engineer, others are in machining, test, etc. Very good pay and benefits. They have been looking for over a year for these positions with little success. If anyone on here knows of someone looking, let me know and I will forward it on. I don't think any experience is necessary at this point. The job is in metro Detroit as far as I know.

Okay... I was told there would be no math, but I'm pretty sure October 5th is 100 days away.

At least that's what the due date calculator thingies keep telling me.

If I needed a job, I personally wouldn't begrudge any city that provided said job, but maybe that's just me. So consider yourselves lucky that you are in a position to make blanket statements about an entire region from your current perch. :)

So, Tech hockey...yep, gonna be a good year.

I was told I would never have to do math again. so I rely on others to do it for me. the press release said "in a little over 90 days". I just figured 90 days with the hoorah that goes on the week before.

how is the little one doing? those little kicks you may be feeling are him/her practicing stick handling. :)

Maybe I should move up from Alabama...

Even Saginaw?

Even Saginaw?

I wouldn't have to live in Saggy, just like I don't have to live in Detroit. ;)

A majority of the Detroit 'burbs are fine - in fact, many are quite wealthy, both old money and new. And the downtown area is slowly reviving, even if Dan Gilbert & Quicken Loans end up owning most of it. :p

D pairings this season look like this to start

1st pair (offense)
Sweeney Hyland

2nd pair (shutdown w/Sova offensive upside)
Stebner Sova

3rd pair (depth)
Hanna Fillion

Leibinger Davis rotating in on third pair

Or is Hanna that good to play on the offensive pairing

Hanna Sweeney
Stebner Sova
Fillion Hyland

???

I think Mel is more likely to pair a shutdown guy with an offensive defenseman. And from what we've heard, Hanna will be more than "depth", especially on the powerplay with Seigo graduated.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Just a few comments on Detroit,
I've lived a lot of places because I was in the military. I like Detroit better than most. Certainly there is plenty of bad, but really the city is turning the corner and a lot of young people are moving in and renovating places in the city. There is a lot of blight, but the era of the city council and the mayor plundering the citizens is over.
I like the tax climate, real estate tax is much less than in minnesota for instance. And as opposed to the east coast, the tax climate is far cheaper with similar services and for the most part, good public schools.. At the same time you get major league amenities. The Detroit institute of Art has about the number 3 or 4 collection in the US. We have good sports teams, plenty of good places to eat, Gold cup hydroplanes if you like that stuff, and overall, it's not that bad.

The climate is still the north, but having lived in the south, I prefer 4 seasons.. In fact in general I really dislike the south and its not just the climate. Plus we have more golf courses per capita than any other state and more boating than almost all other states. so, make fun of it if you like, but I respectfully disagree, Michigan is a good place to live.
