Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

That was inevitable, though I hoped we'd get another year out of him.

Mel knows people, I'm not too worried. However, getting a guy of Shields' caliber on a volunteer basis will be very difficult.

Sigh:
BREAKING: #mtuhky volunteer goalie coach Steve Shields is leaving Michigan Tech. The search for a new volunteer goalie coach has begun.

I was wondering about staff. Will be a tough loss. Where is he going? Continuing in coaching? Why is the NCAA so tight on hockey coaches?

Are they just repairing settling cracks in the floor?

Nice to see the old board going to the Coliseum but I thought that board was working well. Where is that board going?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Stephen Anderson threw out Turco's name on Twitter as a wild, long-shot possibility of someone who might be on Mel's radar. Frankly, I don't see it. Definitely not as a volunteer.

Any news on where Steve's going? I hope his departure doesn't sour Copley or Phillips on coming back. We need both of them. I see we now have two goaltenders in the pipe: Marcus Zelzer, an older NAHL product, probably coming in this fall as third string, and Angus Redmond, a 17 y/o BCHL goalie who probably won't come until 2015.

Sounds to me that this came down to being unable to pay him in a hockey capacity, so he has to leave to start earning a regular paycheck, but doesn't have any firm offers yet - "some pro interest".

A guy named Tim S. who lives on the North side of the Twin Cities. He has several RACKS of UND / North Stars game jerseys. He use to have his UMD collection on Webshots but I can't access it anymore since Webshots got taken over by another company.

Ryan J
I was wondering if it was him. I met him this last hockey season.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

what job did he do when we wasn't volunteering as the goalie coach?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

bummer about Shields. he was doing a great job.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Has anyone heard If Damon Whitten is interested in UAH?

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

FYI - for the Scoreboard webcam. I think Stephen Anderson tweeted last week that the old one would come down today and the new one will get put together and maybe put up this week.

personally, I think anybody would be crazy to step into that mess in Anchorage.

Totally Agree. I've been thinking that for a while. And the UAH timing is somewhat puzzling as well, though nobody comes close to the dis-functionality of UAA.
As far is Tech is concerned, you don't want it to become a stepping stone or even viewed as a stepping stone. So the pay will have to continue to be competitive and the work environment has to be outstanding. Sometimes I think we as fans put unnecessary pressure on the coach.

The UAH and UAA jobs have a lot of similar challenges - both teams play in aging, off-campus, community-owned arenas with a pro tenant they have to share ice time with, both are outside the geography of college hockey, and neither program has done much winning as of late. But with the Huntsville job, at least you know that your biggest threat is mostly administrative. In Anchorage, you have to put up with the admins, AND that Doyle Woody guy constantly taking shots at the program in the local paper, AND all of the local factions who think they know what's best for the program, AND the local faction that prefers pro hockey (or bouncyball) and thinks the UAA program should be folded.

Recent renovations in Huntsville have remedied that aging part. Much like the terrific upgrades that Tech has done.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Cedar Rapids (USHL) had their tryout camp this weekend and 3 Michigan Tech recruits participated. Returning players Dylan Stemen, Mark Auk, and affiliate player Mitch Reinke all had good camps. I think it goes without saying that Dylan and Mark will make the roster this year, and I also think Mitch has a good shot. He has grown since last year. I would guess he is in the 5'10 to 5'11 range now. He still has a slender build but his hockey IQ is off the charts. Excellent skater, good vision, and finds the shooting lanes very well. Really high on Mitch and he has made the 30 man roster for the July camp.
