Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Andy Sutton retired.

Here's to Sutts and a review of his career... jersey style. (Haven't grabbed an Oilers yet, still waiting for a 50% off sale.)

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Link to the official press release for next years schedule:

http://www.michigantechhuskies.com/sports/mice/2013-14/releases/20130522a0lram

If probably said it before, but it's a hard non-conference schedule, I hope Mel knows what he's doing!

This weeks Follow the Huskies Episode 22 is behind the scenes of the Athletic Communications Department that gets so much scrutiny on these boards!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Definitely a tough schedule. The last few years it seems like we played a bunch of home games to start the year and then finished on the road. Hopefully, going on the road to start will build some chemistry and the tough non-conference schedule will have them at the top of their game for the WCHA schedule. These NC games are winnable, even on the road. Particularly if these teams repeat their early season struggles from last year.

Talk to me about this Winter Carnival thing. One of my friends is an MTU alumnus, but I'll ask y'all instead.

GFM <— might make the trip, you never know.

From what I know, you get really drunk for a couple days straight, and build intricate snow sculptures. And watch hockey.

To paraphrase Lewis Black On WI: "Oh, Carnival? That's the weekend we decide to build snowmen when we're drinking!"

If you want to go, most places have a 4 day minimum on hotel reservations and if you wait much longer, there is a good chance things will be booked up. If you decide you want to go and can't find lodging, let me know. I know a few tricks that have worked in the past.

Highly recommended trip. I'll be going for sure this year as it's the first time we play you guys and I want to be there.

But like Brent said. Drinking. But this isn't too different from most weekends. The difference is statues and atmosphere around campus. My camelback still tastes of tequila after 8 years...

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

It's one long weekend in February each year where classes are cancelled on Thursday and Friday, and the administration quietly ignores binge drinking on school property, while the local businesses count up all the money they make off of the visiting families of freshmen. ;) Although for all I know these days, Tech might've done what they did with Homecoming and developed a set of fouls, MAX fouls, double secret fouls, triple fouls with bacon and cheese, etc.

Many snow statues are built - a few are quite large/elaborate, and are started 4-5 weeks in advance, some are built during the all-nighter on the first evening and it's amusing to wander around the next afternoon, nursing a hangover and trying to figure out what some of them were supposed to be. There is a silly, Olympic-style Carnival Games, a Carnival Queen, and a Snow Ball. Broomball is played and watched by a large portion of the student body. Hockey is watched and involves a surprisingly nice trophy called (what else?) the MacInnes Memorial Cup, awarded to the winner of the total goals series. Tech usually plays well because until this past season, it was the only hardware they had an honest shot to win all year.

And ditto on the lodging. The best local hotels are pretty much reserved a year in advance.

That sounds like one hell of a blast. I won't know about coming up for a few months yet. I wonder if I could crash on the couch at John McCabe (UAH '99)'s house over in Hancock and drive over. I have a Subaru and have driven in snow before.

Oh, and PP, I have a reasonably good winter coat, and I also have quite a bit of personal insulation. I've been in Marquette in January before.

Well, there's snow, and then there is U.P. snow. The Gopher group that has gone up there in years past have a name for a phenomenon up there, when you inevitably hit the whiteout stage during a storm: The Wall Of F*. :D

Carny is officially run by Blue Key, not Tech. Not sure how those politics work, but Tech might not be able to stick their fingers in it. Yet.

I've got a turbo in the WRX, which means that I can get into trouble quickly! ;)

Speaking of jerseys, I think I saw you picked up a ton of UMD jerseys from the Game Worn Auction this past week. Congrats! ( I lurk their forums, never signed up to post)

I was able to get the Jimmy Howard Griffins jersey. First time bidding through them, quite surprised at their auction rules where the bidding stays active on ALL items if one item gets bid upon. Made the jersey I won jump in price three times overnight. Ugh.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Yeah, I picked up nine of the UMD jerseys. (How sad is it that I was able to obtain more UMD jerseys than MTU jerseys this season.) There were two major UMD collections I knew of, but after this week one of them no longer exists as it has been splintered a couple dozen different ways. UMD stuff is tough to get so although I didn't intend to get that many, I can always use them for traders. I was fully expecting that the typical all-night bidding would cause me to lose a few jerseys, but I guess the college bidders went to bed early. For those of you not familiar auction site we are discussing, the auction "ends" at 9pm, but has extended bidding for 10 minutes from the time of the last bid. This means every item on their site continues as a live auction until there are no bids on ANY item for a full 10 minutes. For this auction it took 8 HOURS after the "end" time before this happened.

In MTU hockey related items, I see that both AK road series were scheduled for Fri-Sat on the expected back-to-back weeks. There was talk a few months ago that one team might move games earlier in the week to shorten Tech's trip. Is that talk dead now or might there still be a shift in dates as we get closer to fall?
