Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I still don't see Barry agreeing to do something like that, MTU and NMU aren't big enough in the new world to garner 1 for 1s, even if the UW road games are in Green Bay. I wouldn't complain about doing something like this if MTU limited their other deals so they still got their average of 17 games in Houghton a season.

Well, he's evidently agreed to it with just NMU, whereas the original rumor had this exact same idea with the games being split amongst NMU and MTU. From the UW thread:

Talked with Northern Michigan's beat writer Matt Wellens tonight and he confirmed that UW and NMU have a four year agreement starting this season. 13-14 in Madison, 14-15 in Green Bay (NMU host), 15-16 in Madison, 16-17 in Green Bay (NMU host). Both schools can opt out after two years.

What do you guys think? Road games in Green Bay are hard to argue with.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I could see them doing that in the future. I think a four-year agreement is a bit much though, I'd rather see Tech strike a two-year deal and keep our OOC schedule fresher.

Well congrats to NMU, I know Michigan Tech's NC is booked up through 2014-15. I also know MTU and UW are talking about NC games. I'm not sure what the plan is, but seems like a nice $$ deal for NMU, not exactly great for the UP fans of the team...but could be worse. Trips to GB and Madison are nice from Marquette. MTU has been more focused on getting Michigan and Michigan St back on the schedule outside the GLI. I'm sure something will shake it but its too bad UW can't make the trip to NMU once in the 4 years...that must have been a deal breaker...haha

A 4-year deal with the NMU years 1 and 3 and MTU years 2 and 4 would work too. idk.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

We should be working with Northern or Duluth to schedule a weekend series with 2 teams like RPI and Union or Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Do it over 2 years, eastern schools come over the first year, 1 plays UMD/NMU Friday night, the other Tech and switch for the next night. I want to see some new teams (yes I know we played St. Lawrence recently) coming around. We've played Wisconsin, and Minnesota and North Dakota for how many years running....they chose to leave, lets see some other schools for a few years, then if we want to try to schedule something with Wisconsin, go for it. It sounds like they are kinda already going this route, except not doing the schedule arrangement I'd like to see with some eastern schools.

I don't see NMU wanting to do this because they seem to hate spending the money to fly anywhere...at least that's the perception NMU fans give on here and I'm not sure eastern teams would want to travel from Duluth to Houghton or vice versa in a weekend.

Let's restart the Superior Cup/Showcase :p

...okay the only real reason I am in favor is that is so I can hang out in Marquette and the Soo.

And that was more or less the original rumor, which has seemingly been replaced with the same thing, just with NMU taking all of the MTU games.

In either case, that's more of a Wisconsin-centered thing, so it's off topic here. I think the simple answer to my initial question is: there isn't anything on the radar for an ongoing MTU-Wisconsin series.

Why would you want to hang out in Marquette or the Soo? :p

The last time I went out in Marquette we went to the bar that was pretty much universally recommended by the NMU people as being the place to go. And they had a live folk music band, with a harp and everything playing there. It sucked. I'm guessing we just had bad luck and went the wrong night, but still, it sucked. The only time we went to the Soo, we almost got kicked out of the bar for singing No Beer, because people "couldn't hear the jukebox". The jukebox wasn't even playing, and we weren't even drunk!

ECAC teams are used to traveling this way, since our league games are one school Friday and another Saturday. How far is the drive between Tech and either of the others? As a Clarkson fan & alum, I think its always a good idea to play out West once or twice a year and CU hasn't been in the UP for quite a while (LSSU a few years ago was our last trip I think).

It takes about 2 hours to drive between Tech and NMU, and 4 hours to drive between Duluth and Tech.

Certainly workable; the longest drive between travel partners in ECAC is 2 hours +/- and 4 wouldn't be a problem either. ECAC teams have done this type of OOC schedule with HE teams too, although less so the last few years.

...basically just to say I went. ha

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

today we go where no Tech fan has gone before. (at least not very many) on to Huntsville!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

So we now have a third commitment in March.
Michigan Tech picked up a commitment from Angus Redmond, Goalie at Salmon Arm in BCHL which makes it the 4th commitment from a 2012-2013 Silverbacks. He'll likely come in for the 2015-16 season as a frosh when Copley and Phillips are seniors. Still looking for a walkon goalie.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

He didn't get a ton of starts in his first BCHL season, but it looks like Redmond acquitted himself decently in the playoffs for a young goalie. Not enough to avoid being swept by Penticton, but better than his older counterpart Clark.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

So has the shift taken place and are the new teams now part of the WCHA and the old ones gone officially? Are we going to see some announcements soon on how things are going to happen going forward.
