Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I'm guessing Tech is 4th in the coaches poll, and 5th or 6th in the media poll.
But it really is such a crapshoot as to who people pick top 3, etc. There has been such little overlap between these teams in NC.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Which means the media will vote based on recent history, and the coaches are likely to puff up the teams they're most familiar with.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Does anyone know the status of any potential Tech-Wisconsin noncon series?

I had thought UW was negotiating a 4 year cycle with:

1 home series vs MTU
1 home series vs NMU
1 "away" series in Green Bay (MTU host)
1 "away" series in Green Bay (NMU host)

But now I hear we have NMU every year and I haven't heard any updates about Tech...

3rd or 4th sounds about right for the preseason polls. Mankato is #1 with a bullet, and I'd put FSU and BGSU ahead of Tech at this point, if I were to put together a preseason ranking.

I heard there was 2 games in Madison for 2014-15 or 2015-16 but that's all I've heard. I know the near future is full with other series including Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota-Duluth. I doubt Wisconsin will ever agree to even that arrangement in this day and age. Wisconsin has "better" teams to trade "1for1s" with than a couple of UP schools. There is talk of continuing to play North Dakota, Wisconsin but other than a 2 for 1s with Michigan and Mich State and a 1 for 1 with UMD, nothing else beyond 2013-14 is set in stone for MTU.

Mankato is clearly the preseason #1.

I'd say BG, Ferris, and Tech are all about equal on paper. BG is figuring out who their next goalie is, and Ferris loses their top two guys to graduation. UAF is also likely in that group, and I wouldn't count NMU out of it either, if Walt gets one of his second-half surges going.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

If all Tech is going to get from scheduling the B1G teams is an away series and a neutral site series I'd just as soon not schedule them. As bad as the past 30 years have been Tech is still a founding member of the WCHA with a very rich history. They don't need to beg to play MSU or Wisconsin.

Agreed. Only schedule 1 for 1 arrangements.

I agree in theory but the point of these type matches is $$$$$. That Final Five check is gone or at least I believe it will be diminished. If $$$$$ is not an issue then fine. I believe NMU played WI neutral site and beat them for a decent pay day.

of course money is the issue--and exactly why BG isn't signing on to any lousy 2-for-1 deals. BG has a home-and-home with OSU next season, and that's the economics of it.
this isn't football, where Michigan can fill 100,000 seats and make a decent payout to visiting teams. Yost and Munn don't hold that many more bodies than the BG Ice Arena. there's not enough payoff for us to take uneven scheduling.
plus, the B1Gs have more non-conference games to slot than we do--in other words, they need to be accommodating. we're always happy to play Michigan/OSU, but we can fill our schedule just fine without them.

We also rent the Resch Center for that weekend and get to keep the gate income. So, even of the place is packed with Badger fans, it's still an NMU "home" game.

That's how we get 1-for-1's with Wisconsin.

Those aren't exactly 1 for 1's. Money wise, yeah they are, but you still don't get a game in your home building.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

Well like it or not, the reality for us is that to get a big team in, we have to go 2 for 1. It's ok with me, as long as the one is in our building. I think we can get all the 1 for 1's we want with the east coast teams and maybe we ought to anyway. I'd be against playing any of the nchc teams with the exception of Duluth. Renting the Resch is not a home game if you ask me, I'd be against it.

AND I'm pretty unhappy we are stuck with wmu at GLI this year, (and I understand Denver next year).... No, I'm real unhappy. The strength of GLI is the national nature of the tourney, take that away and it's not the same. ( I know, I know, olympia entertainment is involved, but I still don't like it)

I'm happy though that I'll get to see Tech several times down state, which I like.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

From my POV, away games at Ferris, BG, LSSU, and Michigan sure as hell makes it a lot easier to actually consider attending a couple of series other than the GLI. I know our MN contingent will disagree, but that's the breaks of the new geography.

Also, we're not likely to get series with most of the eastern schools. Not when Hockey East and the ECAC can just schedule each other and save a lot of money on travel costs, which they can eventually put towards 1-for-1 series with larger schools. Even B1G schools rarely do 1-for-1s with eastern teams.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I'm guessing I'll only attend 2 Tech series a year now. I'm not regularly traveling to Ferris or Lake State to watch games. No ****ing way.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason I - New teams, new scoreboard, new goals... bring it on!

I gotta say, this one I don't have my mind wrapped around just yet. Anyone got a read on this move and/or know anything about Mitch? Looking at the roster and committed list on THG, there's not many (any??) openings left on defense.

Here is what I wrote down about Mitch from last year's camp in Cedar Rapids:

Undersized (5'6 ish) offensive defenseman. Very good skater and makes good decisions with the puck. He sees the shooting lanes very well and puts the puck on net when he decides to shoot. A year or 2 away from Juniors because of physical stature.

Thanks for the knowledge, Herb. Good stuff.

I think the benefit for Wisconsin is to try to engage fans in NE Wisconsin by trying to bring games to that audience every now and then. And if Barry can accomplish that with "away" games, he'll like it all the better.

As I see it, the only X-factor for whether this would be something MTU and NMU are willing to do would be whether (a) the UP schools also see an advantage in engaging their alumni in NEW and (b) if they can still pull a profit from the gate after having to rent the Resch Center.

I still don't see Barry agreeing to do something like that, MTU and NMU aren't big enough in the new world to garner 1 for 1s, even if the UW road games are in Green Bay. I wouldn't complain about doing something like this if MTU limited their other deals so they still got their average of 17 games in Houghton a season.
