Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

I've met him, I like him. Good hire.
(not because I find him likeable, I just think he's a good coach and seems likely to be a good recruiter)

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

So if he is from the Soo, is this the Soo Greyhounds?!! and is there any information on his connections out west?

Played for LSSU '83-'86, Soo Indians head coach '95-'05 (left as winningest coach in NAHL history), LSSU Asst. '05-'08, NMU Asst. '08-'14.

I'm guessing he recruits the OJHL, NAHL, and USHL. Muckalt is the BCHL guy.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

maybe i'm not thinking straight, but why leave an equivalent job to move 100 miles, unless it pays better, of course.

1. I'm 99% certain we can offer him a substantial raise.

2. He's been at NMU for six years. Just like in the corporate world, people make lateral moves every so often because they get bored/frustrated, or just want to learn new things and gain more experience. Working with Mel and Billy will give him new ideas, and vice versa. I'm sure he wants to be an NCAA head coach someday.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

Outstanding guy, good coach, solid recruiter and having been a goaltender and having done a lot of work with goalies, he would fill some of the void Shieldsy left behind.

Why do you think he'd leave NMU for MTU?

It just proves out what most of us have known all along...
MTU >> NMU

Also Joe should have the "Why the UP is an awesome place to play hockey..." speech pretty well memorized based on his past experience. For what it is worth, Joe was also mentioned for the LSSU head coaching job. His bio at nmu.edu says he has two kids attending NMU (as of last season).

i'm sure he'll have much more input as Mel's assistant versus what he did at Northern. Walt handles everything when it comes to the coaching. Also, probably more money and possibly a chance to be a head coach if Mel does leave.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

It's a good problem to have for the team, but there are some good players on the list that are not even going to sniff the ice during a game unless the injury bug hits the team in 2014-15.

That never happens to us. :p

IMO, we need a 3/4C to step up and take Rix's place in the bottom six, and at least one of our RWs below Petan/Sturos needs to make good progress.

That defense group is very solid. No shortage of good players there.

Goalie will ideally be sorted out quick by Phillips running with his chance, but anything could happen.

Getting playing time on defense is going to be very difficult. There will likely be 8 guys fighting each other to get to dress but I expect 4 or 5 of those guys to play if healthy. As for Center, who knows where that depth will come from...I would expect Blacklock to get the first crack at Center. On the wings, obviously there could be more shuffling. Heinonen, Eick, Baltus, Sturos, and Heitala played on both wings throughout the season. I would think Johnstone, Eick, Gillies, Petan, Sturos, L'Esperance will play most games if the frosh play the way I expect. That leaves 2 spots for the rest.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

I got from dad this week, a collectors item. JJ are you listening. my 1969- 70 and my 70 71 season tickets. 69 -70 was 4. 50 and 70 71 was 6 dollars. these were north side, number 1 H 61 and number 203 row 2 seat 13.

this was for friday nights. you could only buy half the year at that time.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

This hire makes me very nervous that Mel is indeed leaving.
He will take Muckalt with him leaving our U.P. Veteran to pick up the pieces.....

All the Lakers wanted him as their next coach, won't it be ironic if the job could have been Damon's if he waited a year.

I doubt this will happen. Unless the fans start unfairly criticizing the coach of course.

Re: Michigan Tech Offseason 2014: Nothing To Say

It's not unreasonable to think that Mel may be covering Tech's bases a bit, but it's completely unfair to suggest he already has one foot out the door.

In fact, I would say that discussions surrounding Mel's contract extension should be starting in earnest now that the assistant search has wrapped. Would be unusual not to get him inked to an extension soon, being on the last two years of his original, 5-year deal.
