Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

Hope they stay too. I like the style of play that Mel brought here and both of these guys know the system and how to run it.
If they can stay we may be able to keep some of it.
So refreshing to hear the comments about keeping good assistants and continuing the path they are on.

Sure beats the last few coaching changes when we were asking whether we could find the right guy to turn the program around.

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

I've been enjoying the heck out of the THG articles. Virtually all of the options presented sound appealing (maybe not Whitten...)

I think my opinion hinges a lot on if we maintain continuity with Shawhan and/or Shuchuk. If that is the case, I have zero problem with going after a first timer/ outsider. If both of those guys stay, Payne is very appealing. Strong coaching background backed up by two guys that have been around the college game for a long time.

If those two leave (maybe just Shawhan) I would lean towards one of the guys with more college experience. The Ellsworth idea in this case works for me.

Thanks, we really appreciate the interest in all the work we're doing...I guess it helps that we've got the market cornered. Sorry we didn't get one out today but we're struggling to get some pictures. Hopefully we'll have 2 tomorrow.

But will Suzanne know if Shawhan and Schuchuk are staying before she hires the new HC?

Two more profiles today of college assistants with no direct connection with MTU:
Dane Jackson, The Champion &
Keith Fisher, The Disciple

As I've stated before, we'll do our best to keep our list of candidates up to date including links to the profiles we have done on "Where to Begin"

One last thing, a good page to check daily is our "Coaching Search" Category summary at THG. If we post anything new related to search, it will show up at the top of the list there...

Enjoy the write-up, thanks.

Are they based in any particular order?

A lot of the order is availability of photographs and writers. Most of the first week was front runners with connections except for Appert...he and Fisher are probably the biggest outliers as far as likelihood of interest from either side. Who really knows though? I think ultimately we have about 3 weeks worth of profiles that make reasonable sense to write...how they get ordered is more about availability of writers, access to pictures, and our level of interest falls a bit last now.

According to this article from the Madison State Journal: http://host.madison.com/wsj/sports/...cle_fc1b3ee7-2dd9-53e4-8a38-2df92cc94f8d.html

Tech is playing the Hall of a Fame game on October 1st at Wisconsin. So according to my stats Tech has FIVE games that are exempt to their total because of the HOF Game, Icebreaker and Alaska trip. Is that correct?

They're also playing in GLI and the Las Vegas tournament plus probably playing ASU in February...what a quirky schedule.

7 exempt games, 4 at Alaska schools, icebreaker and HOF game

Re: Michigan Tech Off-season Revised - Onward and Upward

NCAA rules, there is an Alaska exemption, one for the icebreaker tournament and one for the hall of fame game.

I guess my question should have included why do they have these exceptions? I will be the first to admit I do not know any of this stuff.

I think in the case of alaska exemptions it's to encourage teams to travel up there by giving them a potential additional home game. If course that's a moot point for most teams getting the exemption because as conference opponents they have to go up there anyways, and have a hard time finding non conference home games. Maybe it's more about just incentivizing a league to take the alaska teams.

It also makes it easier to accept the Alaska schools as conference mates.
There used to be more exceptions but not it's just those three (there is also an exemption for games played in Hawaii against Hawaii schools. Alaska and Hawaii have exemptions in all sports, I believe. The icebreaker is exempt because the gate money goes to the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

I believe the Icebreaker has a similar mandate for $ that the HOF has, just not sure where it goes.
