Re: Michigan Tech @ MSU-Mankato, Feb. 3-4: Insert wittiness here.
Any predictions in this one are probably irrelevant. I think Tech certainly has the ability to come away with 4 points and Tech REALLY needs to come away with 4 points. If history is an indicator, a split is likely. Tech has a lot of momentum and a great deal of scoring talent, but as I pointed out a few months ago, Tech tends to do well against ranked opponents and to not do well against lower ranked teams. This season's been a roller coaster to follow....strong performances against Wisconsin, Denver, Minnesota & UMD and weak performances against Bemidji, UAA, Mankato & St. Lawrence. I don't think it's as simple as struggling against trap systems. I saw a few of those games and the opponents mostly played a pretty wide open style. I think it's at least partly psychological....they only bring their A game when they're psyched up for a battle. This series will tell a lot about the direction of the rest of the season. As another poster correctly pointed out, in the WCHA, any team can put up a scrappy performance against a top team and occasionally win, but it's doing so consistently against all opponents that shows the real level of talent as a team. Tech's already exceeded most people's expectations for this season by being a middle-of-the-pack program, but to be taken seriously, they will need to sweep this weekend. The remaining available 16 WCHA points after this weekend will be tougher to come by.
