Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Since we're getting close to locking in an NCAA appearance (not guaranteed yet, obviously), Shirtless Guy and I are preparing. I booked a hotel at each regional site, to get a hotel near the arena. All have full cancellation until 24 hours before checkin. If there are other Tech fans that are planning on traveling, and want rooms at the hotels very close, here is where we'll be staying for each regional, should we be there:

Providence: Providence Hilton (right next to the arena)
South Bend: Holiday Inn Express (just north of Notre Dame Campus)
Manchester: Comfort Inn Airport (about a mile away, across the river) -the 2 closest hotels to the arena were full already
Fargo: Hampton Inn & Suites (pretty close to the arena, probably not walking distance)

Fargo and Providence were the most expensive, at about $180 per night, and South Bend and Manchester were both right around $130 per night (all including taxes and fees). Fargo and Manchester are booked for Friday night and Saturday night, and South Bend and Providence are booked for Saturday and Sunday night.

To follow up on this, since South Bend and Fargo are sellouts, I contacted people at MTU about whether or not there is a list for getting first crack at the team allotment. Once the site is determined, MTU will be allotted something like 400 tickets for fans, I apparently got bigblue and I first on the list. If you'd like to be on the list, contact tickets@mtu.edu.

In other news - I really like game used jerseys and I really support our current and former players...
But there is no way I'm spending my money on these.... well, there are no words. *shudder*

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

Also, I made a map on Google Maps for all of us (Tech Fans) to use for planning. I have added arenas and some nearby hotels to it, and I added a few bars, but I realized that I don't know enough about most locations to know which bars to check out. If anyone has any recommendations for bars, breweries, restaurants, taprooms, etc. in host cities, let me know and I'll add them, or if I missed a hotel that should be mentioned, or if a hotel shows up sold out, just tell me, and I will update as needed.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

we are in! thanks Blue and Shirtless for the info. we are flying into Minneapolis, driving to Houghton, driving back to Minneapolis, waiting for the selection show and then ... winging it.

I love having problems like this. may it happen to us every March and April!

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

I so wish I could join you guys, I would absolutely love it, but starting a new job tomorrow I think pretty much precludes me from going anywhere for awhile.

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

The Providence rooms are filling up fast. The holiday inn is already sold out.If you are there, it's a short walk up the hill to the italian section, where there are loads of restaurants and bars. Good food, but not cheap. Brown University is also in the center of the city, and walking distance the other way from little Italy.. it's a very nice campus. You don't need a car there, just cab it from the airport and you can walk to everything from then on.The hotel might even have a shuttle.

In Manchester, you need a car. In South Bend, you can stay in the center of the city and it is walkable to the rink, but it's a long walk. car recommended. In Fargo, there are a number of hotels, right down town. I've stayed at the Radisson a number of times and there are a few good brew pubs.
You probably do need a car. I think the Morehead side is a bit more expensive than the Fargo side.

For both Manchester and Providence, at this point it looks like flying into Boston will be a $$ saver. Which would mean a car would be needed.

Also, where is the Holiday Inn in Providence, I didn't find one close to the arena?

Holiday Inn downtown is immediately across the street from the back of the arena, but it's booked so it doesn't show on a lot of the sites because those dates are blocked out. You can take a train as well btw. You take the subway out of the airport to south station, on the silver line if I'm not mistaken, and catch the train to Providence there.

Driving to Providence from logan will cost you the car, and BTW the taxes in Boston are over 50% on rental cars, the fee for the tunnel, 3.75 last time I did it, and one to two hours drive time, plus the gas of course,. As long as the weather's good and it's not rush hour.

so for three days,( friday, sat, sun) 140 for the car, 20 for gas, 3. 75 for the tunnel costs, plus parking in Providence. Some hotels charge, some don't. And that's a cheap car with no extra insurance. Also they normally will charge you 1.50 per day for the auto toll collector thing that sits on the windshield.

to manchester from logan, there is an airport shuttle for about 17 dollars that leaves once per hour to the manchester airport and vice versa. I believe there is also a regular bus and there is a train, though I have never tried it. Cars in manchester are cheaper and have a lot less tax. To catch the train, you have a couple of choices, bus to the woburn express station and catch it there, or subway to north station. I'm no expert on this route though.

I searched on Google maps for Holiday Inn and it didn't show up. A bunch of others showed up in the suburbs, but no Holiday Inn downtown. Google fail? The Hilton I booked is right to the west of the Dunkin Donuts Center.

I will check the flights closer to the selection sunday and take all of that into account. It will probably end up that both Shirtless Guy and I use miles to go out there, if necessary. In which case, Providence may work for a flight.

I can see Fargo being a sellout with the expectation that UND will be there, but who is buying up tickets for South Bend with so much uncertainty on who will be there? Are Notre Dame and Worstin Michigan fans really planning on conference tournament runs? Or am I unaware of something logistically in those two sites?

Notre Dame attached them to season tickets since it's in their building. There will definitely be tickets available, just on the secondary market...if people even try to sell them...

Re: Michigan Tech, best season in 30 years, part two!

So for those attending and not reading the MSU v MTU thread, Mankato is going to try for a whiteout at the Saturday game.

I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part... and we're just the fans to do it.

So I hereby declare Saturday in Mankato "The Plague of Black Death Descends on Mankato Saturday" - All Tech fans to wear black from head to toe (face paint and night vision goggles are optional). Bonus points for integration of Batman / Catwoman / Ninja theme.
