MICHIGAN TECH 2017 OFF-SEASON - We're Adding to the Trophy Case & Keeping Pearson

Re: MICHIGAN TECH 2017 OFF-SEASON - We're Adding to the Trophy Case & Keeping Pearson

Re: MICHIGAN TECH 2017 OFF-SEASON - We're Adding to the Trophy Case & Keeping Pearson

Agree. I tried to find some info on his salary at Iowa, but didn't come up with much. Would you estimate it's something in the 100-150 range? Or lower?

Yeah, about $150k would be my guess for an AHL coach.

I will be out of town for work this afternoon, but check for my prelim list of candidates on TechHockeyGuide.com this afternoon, including those I don't want but expect to apply and some that I expect won't apply but think might and would be a good fit. I'll try and invest some time this week in going deeper into many of them.

Dave Shyiak, come on down!

(ducks and covers)

I would be comfortable with Muckalt, Rolston, Shawhan, or Eades. Time for me to fly, more thoughts later.

Technically the title is now quite misleading.

And my (way too long) list of candidates is up...

Hopefully I'll get an in depth look at one of the front runners written up tonight.

Chris Bergeron? Really? Is Tech that much more of a destination coaching job than BG or are you trying to make the list longer/more impressive?

It's a risk you take when he's underpaid at $170k salary. Tech would have the $250k to buy him out as a result of Mel's buyout.

Reputation for what? Being pi55ed off that Mel used his alma mater as a stepping stone to return to Ann Arbor for $Texas? Yeah, fark that noise.

Sure, we have whiners. So does everyone else, and in spades. You've been to REA and possibly Yost - you know what it's like.

Stepping stone programs can succeed long-term. I don't know if there is a great example in college hockey but Xavier/Dayton come to mind in college hoops. I could understand being ****ed if Michigan hired him after one blah season at Tech. The guy leaves your program in as good of shape since when exactly? When was the last time Michigan Tech was as good a program as they have been the last 5 years or so? If you have competent administrators, you find the next guy to build on what Pearson has done. Mel Pearson did the hardest work. If the next guy is any good, he has it much easier.

I actually agree with all of this, but that doesn't mean our fans have to happy about it, or "wish Mel luck" at Michigan, or aren't entitled to give him hell at the next GLI. ;)

Even with the "he's underpaid" risk, he's going to uproot his school age kids for cashola and land at Tech? I get the first part, but the second? I guess stranger things have happened...

It won't be Bergeron, don't worry. I doubt he even applies.

This figures are a bit outdated. Bergeron has a base of about $185,000 now with some makes life. Bonuses that put over $200,000. It's also spelled out in his contract that he will get around $170-175,000 with which to pay his assistants. And then there are other bonuses and perks. He also has attendance bonuses that have paid him quite handsomely. No disrespect to Tech, but it would be a lateral move at best for Bergeron.

We put it in there as a possibility, but no real expectation. Maybe we'll get him a raise. :p

With the hire of Potulny, that tells me there will be some surprises for applicants, I took a stab at who might be interested. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you jokingly put horse racing odds on your list like I did with the NMU candidates, I'd make "Field" not much better than your fifth named candidate. There may be some dark horses who throw their names in.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH 2017 OFF-SEASON - We're Adding to the Trophy Case & Keeping Pearson

I won't tell y'all how to feel, because I have no experience with an alumnus coming back to coach the school in the way that Mel did. We're still pretty young. I can see the frustration, anger, sadness, and all that.

I'm just hopeful that you'll realize, in a few days, weeks, or months (however long it takes to process!) that y'all still have a great program, definitely in the top three in our league and making a push to consistently be at the top nationwide. You're not going to be a sub-.500 school looking for a new hire, taking on a struggling program and hoping to turn it around the ways that Corbett, Thomas, and Whitten have at their respective schools. You're going to get interest from old hands and up-and-comers alike. Will they stay for 20 years? Maybe, maybe not, but how many coaches do that anymore anyway?

You have a solid foundation, and don't expect it to crumble. Give money, keep supporting, and Muck Fichigan.

Potulny definitely sent some shockwaves out. Tech will have a solid pool to choose from and likely won't have to go too far outside the box. It will be interesting to see if Mel opts to bring Shawhan or Shuchuk (or both) along with him. Muckalt could also be a UM asst candidate if he does get the Tech job.

Jesus, I'm starting to see why our fanbase has a bit of a reputation...
Sorry, I just figured the guy was trolling and his post was not meant to be informational but rather was meant to rub our noses in it. To which I took great exception. and I'll try to rein it in more going forward.

As far as the next coach and the prospects. Let's go back in history. after John M, we had, and I'm just off the top of my head here.Jim Nahrgang, Herb Boxer, bob mancini, Dan Farrell, newell brown, ( who I still like a lot) mike Sertich, tim Watters, jamie Russell, and mel pearson. and I probably left some guys out. But on average how many years did these guys last? how much better was the program when they left then it was when they started. ?
I doubt any of them came in and said they would not be able to build on what was there already. All of them felt like they could progress, but mostly they did not. Some got part way and left, but overall, we got no where with nothing to show for it. Sure mel has more wins than the last two or maybe three guys combined, but does that really translate to a successful program into the future?
I agree with some that the level of support is higher than the recent past and that's good, but We don't have a great track record here, and I'm skeptical we can make any progress. Whoever is the best should get the job and connections to Tech be dammed. And to me, the only path to long term success is for us to have a long standing coach. We have to do what it takes to get to that point. And I don't buy that it can't be done.
