Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

In all honesty, the defense was good, scoring chances were not up, goaltending was the problem. Injury likely would kill any spring signing for just about anyone...

MTU had 3 goalies in 2017-18 start at least 9 games and all had winning records. In cave man voice....Defense was good, power play bad.

winning %? Really? That’s how you decide whether goaltending is good? Scoring was UP from last year, PK was was down. Sv% was down, GAA was up...and let’s be honest, all that is skewed by the run they went on in the playoffs.

Tough to see Reinke go, but I think we'll be OK if he's the only early departure.

You're missing the point Shirtless Wonder. After loosing a stud goalie from 2016-2017, the fact coach Joe had to send out 3 different goalies on 9 or more game starting situations (and they all gathered more wins than losses) shows me MTU readied them enough for battle. Minus any off ice BS, I'd say the skaters were pretty confident every night with their backstop. Heart is/was there and an improved Special Teams mindset would have the Huskies in St. Paul this weekend.

Kero got hurt in the playoffs. Do you think Angus would have cashed the same bonus check if that were him this year? Would that bonus check even be there with a team that wasn’t as strong defensively this year?

If Angus was here this year, I don't think we have as much instability in goal. There were several games where he "saved" the game for us. He also would have about one or two freshman mistakes a game. To my untrained eye, those looked fixable. If he could have had similar numbers to 2016-2017, he would have been in the conversation top goalie in the league.

His check most likely would have been bigger as he would have proven he could do it for two years in a row, but that is just an opinion.

No offense but I'd disagree Redmond was a stud goalie. You might not have gone to the Denver game last spring though.

No offense taken and no offense further that Redmond is the epitome of STUD in that he played one year and sold off to for a shiny contract. Purely good enough to go.

Agree, and I wonder how much training and development he gets now as a back up goalie for Toledo. Maybe he didn't like being academics, saw the $$$ and took it? If he stayed we would not have Packy either.

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

I finally got a chance to listen to the final Joe Show. A couple things he said I found particularly interesting. The first one was early on and he made a comment about the guys buying into the system and having strong practices down the stretch. Made me think he struggled to get everyone pulling on the same rope earlier in the season. Could be cause or effect but goes along with the inconsistent play and early losses. Another comment he made was during the fan question session when someone asked about recruiting to replace Reinke, Birks and Auk. He said something to the effect that they had that scenario covered until another school came in and got involved with that. Hmmm, about whom could he have been talking?

The other comment that caught my ear was that Laura wants to have the pep band and misfits over for a bonfire. That's awesome!

I like this Coach, I like this team!

He said that it was Michigan straight up. Marv Parson strikes again.

I didn't catch him specifically name Michigan outright (I was trying to get some work done and listen at the same time so I missed some parts).

Maybe I was hearing things but I could have swore he point blank said Michigan...

I stand corrected. At the 44' mark he specifically calls out Michigan. The only one I heard the first time I listened was at the 56' mark when he just said "another school". Thanks.

As far as that incident goes, I know he said they're still looking to replace that player lost to Michigan but I think they already did, with Tyrell Buckley from the BCHL who committed on 2/21/18. Between him and Colin Swoyer, I think they've got pretty good coverage for Auk, Birks, Reinke. Maybe he's stalking about trying to find a third impact defenseman because I'm not sure they have a third one right now. But Donohue, Meek, Swoyer, Buckley and Ford when healthy make a pretty good set of 5 to me.

With every coaching change, even if it is an internal promotion, there is going to be some adjustments. With a coach that has been there a while guys know exactly what to expect. It is hard when the structure is similar and the emphasis is different. For example, gritty/dirty ice play is a point of emphasis for Joe. That could be what we saw early. I think they got it in the Saturday @BGSU game was the turning point to this team buying into Joe's system.

That makes me wonder if Joe and staff can find someone to come in and give us another top level D. Are there any transfers out there?

I do think we will have a respectable, but VERY young D next year. Meek and Donohue played better than I expected. Here's hoping Ford fully recovers and is ready for WCHA play. (I assume he tore his ACL??) No matter what, it isn't going to be easy to replace Auk, Birks, and Reinke.

Ha! As many times as Red did. Marv doesn't like cold weather.
Marv is just scared about what would happen. From both the team and from the fans.
