Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

The difference last week from Friday to Saturday was intensity. It was way more intense saturday. Same this week however saturday was not as intense as last week.. I agree we made a lot of the same mistakes, just fewer and the goalie bailed us out a good bit. That save was after the horn went so it doesn't count. Glad to see him doing well though.
I'm hoping jackson isn't hurt too bad. I really like his game and he makes such a difference at times to our game. I thought Baltus played ok but it was obvious he is still hurting. I'd like to see him rest up some more and be ready for the playoffs.
We also do not get all day to move the puck out of our own end. The other team is going to try to take it away. You need to think about what you might do before the puck comes not after.

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

It's all about transition to Joe's ideas/system, and unfortunately some average-at-best goaltending, mixed in with flashes of brilliance. The hysterics here the last 2-3 months have been hilarious.

Couldn't agree more. With everything we lost at the end of last season, i don't care who the coach is there was going to be a dropoff this season. Add in all the injuries, especially on defense and we could very easily be further down in the standings than we currently are.

All the sky if falling folks need to R-E-L-A-X. Looking at the classes coming in over the next couple of years I'm pretty excited to see where the program is going.

You may not like Joe's answers on his show and interviews, but I'll take honesty over canned coach speak any day.

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

Here's something that bugs me about our team. If you watch the eastern skill teams like BC say, those guys are deadly close in to the net. They stand very close and they expect a pass with no notice and are ready to move the puck towards the net instantly, from a pass that comes almost out of no where. Whereas if you watch our team, we get to the net front but we are not ready for the pass and if it comes, which it does every so often, we miss the shot or shoot wide, or are slow to react. Drives me nuts watching goals go by the wayside because of it.
And the second thing that drives me nuts. We get a forward who is in possession of the puck after the first pass from a defenseman, this is often still deep in our end. What does he do,? he shoots it up the boards without really thinking about where to go with it and it goes right to their point man, or to our guy who is not in position to keep it and who is covered by their point man. We end up giving up possession for no reason.

I have not seen one comment on here asking for the coach to be canned. I'm not even sure I could find a comment that says he is doing a bad job of coaching the players.
The sky is falling attitude comes directly from the coach after every loss recently. He tears the players apart after every loss. Actually berates the character, the effort and the desire to perform. I guarantee if you watched Friday's game and Saturday's game without seeing features that identify the 2 games; 90% of you on this forum could not tell me which game was which. The effort, the drive and desire was there both nights. The turnovers, missed coverages, etc. were there both nights. The difference, pucks went in for MTU and not for Bemidji on Saturday night.
This is a **** good team, fighting a lot of issues that they don't control and doing one hell of a job. They need a coach that's behind them 100%, not just when they win.
And no they don't need a **** peacock.
Listen to Friday's post game locker room interview and you tell me how you feel any confidence after that. He's better off skipping the interview because his assessment of the game is wrong. I guarantee the guys were as upset as he was and they care about the jersey as much as he does.

I didnt hear the Friday post game interview nor did I hear what he said to the team in the dressing room. Whatever he told the boys seemed to work. I don't think Coach said anything that broke the confidence of this team.

I was at the game on Saturday and the boys played hard. They got some nice bounces but they also created their breaks. Kero was solid which has been a major source of inconsistency this year. These guys have battled all year long and are showing no quit.

I like this coach.
I like his assistants.
I like these players.
I like this team.

Maybe you should volunteer to help scout for new player since you have very few good things to say about the current ones and appear to know so much about what they should be doing. Or strap your own skates on and see what you can do.
If you want perfection you won't find it in this sport at any level.

That would be hilarious. And I like our team. :), I'm really not that down on them and I'm not looking for perfection. I guess I get spoiled watching the NHL. .

In order to correct mistakes, you first must identify mistakes. If you don’t identify and correct mistakes, you will continue to make mistakes.

It the postgame of the Friday NMU-UAF game, the coach identified areas where he felt his team was lacking in their performance that night. He addressed those issues with his team. His team has 20 wins, no coddling necessary.

Kind of funny because they make the same stupid mistakes in the NHL. Maybe not as many but they are there.
I just feel this team deserves more respect from the coach. Many of them were a large part of the championship last year and ALL of the freshman are doing great!

I would like you to listen to the post game and see if your comment is valid, I think not.
I would be ok with your approach.

If being sweet & soft on players is so effective, how has Nick Saban won 5 titles in 9 year? If players make mistakes and you don’t identify and correct them, how do you fix them? If players are too soft to get their mistakes corrected, they dont belong on the ice, football field, basketball court or baseball field.

Maybe they should see if there’s a varsity coloring team if they can’t take getting chewed! Mommy, coach said I played bad...waaaaaahhhhh. He said my bad pass cost us a goal...sob...sob...sob...

If you can’t take a foot in the backside, you might as well check out on life. Life ain’t pretty. And quite, the boss expresses displeasure with your work. If you crumble when you get your butt chewed, you better stick to volunteer projects.

I disagree with some of this. You can't get better if you don't take criticism seriously. RB said I was too negative and maybe I am. I do tend to point out the mistakes too often and not the good parts so much. He's got a point. After all, the most difficult thing there is to do in life is be honest with yourself. So I'll try to be more positive.

Good morning Tech fans and sorry to jump in the middle of your conversation. I will be coming up this weekend and if anyone is interested in saying hello, let me know a good place/time to see you. I have had a chance to chat with a few of you over on the ASU board. Have a great week!

The joys of balancing truth with love. All of either one rarely works. The players should know that Joe is a straight shooter. He appears to try to balance his messages to the guys.

Joe and staff are doing a great job. I don't know what better they could be doing. Our freshmen are developing and playing key rolls in critical situations. Other players have shown significant growth this year. Our team has been resilient to the massive injury bug that has bit us. This team has one of the most "never say die" attitudes of recent Tech teams. I believe every player on our team is giving it their all.

We have been spoiled by being able to ride very good goalies over the last several years. Several teams rotate two or three goalies. How long has it been since we had an unsettled net?

The frustrating part is we can get look broken on Friday then Saturday look like world beaters.

All that said they are human and have a talent ceiling. Welcome to life. As much as we don't want to openly say it, we aren't dealing with NHL caliber players. These are college kids who, if they go on, most are going to be in the ECHL/Europe, spend some time with the AHL, and hope to see a few games at the NHL level. The reason most of these guys go to Tech is to get a college degree. This is not me being down on Tech or the guys, because even if a team can recruit like a BC, BU, U of MI, U of MN,... it doesn't mean success. It is all about being a team and working together.

Go Tech!!

Comparing Joe Shawhan to Nick Saban? Let's not get carried away here. Joe does get a bit negative publicly at times, but that's just his style. What you see and hear is what you get.

Not comparing the people, comparing the style and challenging the need to be soft hearted on today’s players.

Yes, but...
Mike Babcock is widely thought of as the best coach in the NHL yet he is also the most in your face. His style was not liked by the Red Wings players after a while. But it does get results. I'm not supportive of that style, and as can be seen in earlier posts from last month, most of us aren't. The positive approach imho is a better approach, but it depends on the individual more so than the in your face type of coaching. The guys in college hockey that are in real your face seem to have more problems keeping players. For instance the ex Wisconsin coach. No-one knows exactly what goes on in the locker room.
But having said all that, RB's comments were about me and not about the coach.
I like our team and I think this year might be a bit down, but overall I can see where we will be real good as we go forward.... But that doesn't mean I'm not frustrated with how things went that game.

I love how some of our players have developed. Even more senior guys, like Blacklock and Anderson are playing better and that was not always the case in the past, and I know it's not the case with other programs that are here in downstate Michigan.

Re: Michigan Tech 2017-18 The Joe Shawhan Era Continues - Getting Better Everyday

Looks like I can finally post! I think I had an account a long time ago, but maybe I was thinking of the D2football forum. Had an issue with the activation every time I had something I wanted to post.

Anyway, just got the Tech email that Kero was selected as WCHA goalie of the week. Not too surprised given the numbers and result of his start, although he did only play the Saturday game this weekend. One interested stat it mentions: "His .913 save percentage ranks second in the WCHA amongst goalies who have played at least nine games and his 2.43 goals against average is fourth." Also, he's 4-2-1 as the starter, which is higher than Tech's overall win percentage.

I say start him the rest of the way, whatever happens...barring injury of course.
