Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

I was thinking last night with the NCAA games being shown in Canada that Tech/ND was not a representation of how good college hockey is, tonight made me forget I was not watching the world juniors, great skilled game. What a difference from last night. The flow and rushes made it enjoyable to watch.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

I know we wanted a sweep for the PWR, but good split and good to see some scoring from a good defensive team.

Mel's postgame with Dirk
We did little things better, won some battles, good PP and PK was good
Total team effort
They're a real good team, to get 4 on the road is good
Mel's bullish on this team, stick with the plan
Smith, thought about getting him out of lineup tonight, kind of been complacent, good to see him play hard
Gould played well in a tough environment, Beretta too
We had some good opportunities we didn't score on
Really looking forward to getting home
Mel P show likely on Tuesday this week

Did he say anything about that ND hand pass in the second that resulted in a faceoff in the Tech zone? He didn't seem too pleased about that at the time, and I don't blame him. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on with that, either.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Our family had UMD-CC and Tech on TV same time. Concluded Tech was playing better hockey. We have come a long way. We can play anyone.

Very pretty goal by Smith and Jackson.

We need to stay out of the box. Trading penalties is not a good idea for this team. We did better at that last night, and it paid off.

Great game on national TV.

I think the PWR reflects the win, with some hockey east comparisons showing better, although the overall still needs RPI help. Putting away the mavericks at home will help.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

It was a treat last night to hear Gord Miller call the game, one of my favorite announcers to hear.
Think the outburst last night will get the forwards some confidence now in the race for the Cup!

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Really enjoyed watching last night's game on TV. (Also enjoyed Friday's, but not quite as much.) I was surprised the boards didn't have any ads on them, does anyone know if any other schools are similarly liberated? I decided I prefer the plain white boards of NCAA tournament games over the green line all the way around.

Also watched some of the World Juniors and enjoyed the college hockey commercials, especially when Tech showed up. Hopefully they reached prospective players...and fans...

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

Jackson played at another level last night, I also liked Evan Anderson's game, overall hustle, winning battles on the boards, and had a wrap around scoring chance. Big win last night, I was so disappointed with the GLI game vs Western, this one showed what Tech can do when they put it together.

I especially liked when he called the town "Hott-in" instead of Houghton.

Better to read the pronunciations ahead of time, Gord. Player names included.

It is really hard listening to other announcers when they are just brutal on what seem like pretty simple names...

I got a kick out the scoreboard transcription of Compton's announcer. Goal by "Make El Neville".

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

The recent commitments of three 20-year-old forwards suggests to me that Mel doesn't think Jackson Cates and Tommy Parrottino are good enough to come in next year. I wonder how many guys won't consider Tech because Red Berenson hasn't retired yet...?
Actually if you look at the list of players lining up to come to Tech compared to other D-I programs, we have one of the biggest back logs in all of college hockey and substantially more than any other WCHA team. Are they all first round NHL draft picks? No, but kids are taking notice of Tech and Mel is booking them. Heck, we already have ELEVEN players committed at forward for the 2020 season.

I was surprised the [Compton] boards didn't have any ads on them...
When you have a football team that can write its own ticket, any money generated by ads on boards isn't worth the time to secure the sponsors and write the contracts. The football helmets look like golden eggs, because that is pretty much what they are when it comes to generating revenue for the school. It's the same reason why Irish football doesn't join the BigTen. The BigTen has nothing to offer that is better than what the Irish already have in football - a sold out stadium every game, a list of big name teams waiting to come to South Bend and their own TV network (NBC).

I want to say again how impressed I am with Coach Pearson. when he was on the radio last month with USCHO, he was on at the same time as the harvard coach. The other guy was not well spoken at all, whereas Coach Pearson represented MTU extremely well. At Alumni gatherings, at anything public, Coach Pearson is so impressive. I am just really happy he's here and I told him that in person a couple of years ago. I still feel the same way. Best coach in College Hockey.

How about a shot at the National Championship Playoff? With five power conferences and only four spots, it's almost impossible for an independent to get consideration.

I'm pretty sure if the Irish went undefeated or had one loss, they would get consideration as they usually play a pretty tough schedule. Besides the NCAA will soon expand football playoffs to 66 teams (should be 64 but we don't want to hurt the feelings of #65 and #66 by leaving them out) and everything will be solved.

Honestly, I think it would be better if it was just an open invite bracket. Anyone who wants to win a National Championship is in. We skip the regular season and just start with the first round of the 128 team playoffs the week of October 1st. All teams are issued playoffs participation trophies as part of pre-game ceremonies at all first round games. As teams are eliminated, they are free to schedule exhibition games against other eliminated programs if their fans have an interest in watching meaningless games (which most teams are already playing by mid-October anyway once they have their second loss). By Thanksgiving we can have the National Championship game and the kids can get back to focusing on their studies - which is really what NCAA athletics is all about... ;)

Good to see the Huskies back in the top 20, even if polls don't mean much. They still have room for improvement in some areas so let's hope a week of home practices and home cooking helps them out.

SG and the staff writers at THG.. great articles on the recent recruits and the junior league series. Also thanks for the update on the jersey order.

Yes the Irish have a special deal if they do well. Though that has not been much of an issue.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH.... 2016-17 season. The 96th season of Hockey.

My takeaways from the Mel Pearson show today:
Steman week-to-week, probably not this weekend, but Mankato
Reinke more day-to-day, both guys skated yesterday

Why use Big Ten refs in GLI - Mel has no issues with last year or this year reffing, doesn't believe there more local WCHA refs either
It is in the Notre Dame contract for them to make a trip to Houghton
Controversial hand pass - refs thought Tech obligated to play it, so although hand pass was at center ice, they had faceoff down in Tech zone, at the beginning of the 3rd, they admitted they were wrong, face-off should've been at center ice as no team played it
Didn't pull goalie on Friday - can be demoralizing to give up another goal, weren't strong on pucks, plus also didn't have a great opportunity, so a combination as to why we didn't pull Angus
Another good reason to get to Notre Dame to get on TV - good exposure for Tech
