Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

seems odd to me that Tech was snubbed for all-WCHA first, second, and even third teams. What's up with that? Hanna has better stats than every D in the league, and Pietila and Kero were ignored completely. Sturos and his 20 points didn't even make the rookie team. I'm assuming these are media awards, or did Mel miss a meeting?

BG shut out on all the conference awards as well.
This weekend=battle of the no-names.
Would serve the rest of the conference right if one of us would run the table.
Go BG.

They are the coaches' awards, with the usual caveat of not being able to vote for your kids. From my understanding, the HC and both AC's get individual votes. The one vote that the FAR's make is the scholar-athlete award.

The media weren't thrilled about being shut out, or at least the ones I talked to about it were a little disappointed. I would've been a voter if we'd have been in the same boat as the pre-season work.

hey, thanks for inviting BGSU to the 2017 GLI @ the Joe! woot!

heading out the door to the BG Ice Arena... not expecting a great crowd, but the series should be a barnburner!

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I guess the days of the 4th team being from out east are done...

Unfortunately, at this point, I've figured that turning the GLI into the ugly stepsister of the Beanpot is likely the difference between continuing to have it, and having Olympia Entertainment pull the plug on it. Those machinations and threats simply haven't been revealed to the public. The local interest is no longer there to continue to justify a national footprint, so they're attempting to shore up the attendance by keeping it regional.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

It seems like its so hard to score sometimes for this team!

Mel's postgame interview:
disapointing, but one game does not win a series, we'll be better tomorrow
It's a fine line, not much to choose between 2 teams, importance of home ice,
people wonder why mel was so on ref about a call back in oct
got better as game went on, have to finish, need good goaltenidng, got it for most part except 2nd goal
took the crowd out of it for the msot part
have to get to the net, BGSU dmen didn't let our forwards get to the net much
They're playoff experienced, they have a lot of guys with that have one
Bad read on BGSU 2nd goal, 2x1, our guy got back in time, but got outmuscled, BGSU made the play
We had good 2x1s and 3x2s, Tanner with a semi breakaway but no shot, have to be smarter around the net
We had good speed, Eick, Kero, Leibinger mad ea great play to Holmberg, had opportunities but didn't take advantage
There are good things, we can win here, we'll be deperate tomorrow, didnt mind our effort tonight
BGSU was not as physical as earlier this year, played smarter
Not sure on lineup changes, liked our effort, we backed off practice, hope to have energy tomorrow

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Here's one BG fan who feels the need to give a friendly shout-out to the great showing of Tech fans here tonight. The band's an especially nice touch, even if they do suck...they brought energy to an otherwise dull and empty arena:(

I was kind of surprised to see the band there. Either the rule that banned visitor bands was just a rumor, the rule got lifted, or perhaps a handful of alumni and spring breakers flouted it without objection from the hosts.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I enjoyed the game generally. I ran into a guy from the MTU team of 1964 who was there sitting behind the bench. I did get tired of the F U chants after a while.

I thought the game was well refereed. I was pretty unimpressed by the rink. I'm amazed bg can recruit players with that kind of a facility.

Tech had a lot of trouble with the aggressive forecheck and when they did get hold of the puck made bad decisions which allowed BG to keep the puck in our end longer than maybe it would have been otherwise. I expect that tomorrow night will be better.

We had some real good chances early and just did not get the job done. I think this allowed them to continue the forecheck. At times they were running two floaters, and had 3 guys below the goal line, which I thought risky, but it worked out for them. On our good chances, we allowed ourselves to get too deep in the corner and got hemmed in.

Our guys regularly went around their defense and our speed showed, but the BG defense was able to keep us away from the front of the net generally.
Our guys never quit and carried the play often, though we had a lot of trouble with the forecheck all game as I said. I don't think their goalie was ever really challenged. We missed the net on our best chances. We played better as the game went on.

There was a lot of stick work by them, but not enough to get a call, just enough to slow our fast guys down. Especially Petan got hooked constantly. BG was able to control bouncing puck better than us and there were a lot of them right by our blue line. they were good at moving the puck without the stick and then finding someone open.
Carpenter made the play on the second goal even while being checked, but he did have a complete open net so all he had to do was get his stick on it.

I had dinner at an irish pub in town and would not recommend the food there. Also, unless you like walking, get there early the parking lot is tiny..

And did I say,, I HATE LOSING!!!

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Obviously you haven't been to Ferris State's rink if you were unimpressed with our rink. Come back when the students aren't on spring break and your impression may change. The low ceiling makes it LOUD and difficult for our opponents. It's an old facility but we have sunk a large amount of money into it recently. The pro shop and the main foyer area with the snack bar and skate rental are all new. Oh yeah, did you notice the curling rink? How many facilities have you been in with one of those?

I expect a larger crowd tomorrow night. Many went over to Cleveland to watch the MAC women's BB playoffs and should be back tomorrow since we lost. :(

Great game tonight. The teams were much more on par with each other than the previous games. Should be another good one tomorrow night!

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

BG's rink is no worse than Ferris, UAA, or NMU's barns. But lately, Ferris has somehow recruited by winning; imagine that.

?? you mean S-U?? it's call and response, B-G S-U. you're too used to michigander behavior--we're polite down here in ohio.
terrific game. physical, but clean.
hope we get some students back tomorrow. our great band would help too.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I would expect a bigger crowd tomorrow as we had 3 to 4 thousand in Cleveland for the MAC Basketball Tournament. Our Pep band was also in Cleveland and I expect them to be at the hockey game tomorrow. Students are not allowed back into the dorms until Sunday, but I expect more of the off campus students to be back tomorrow.

I thought it was an even, hard fought game. Tomorrow's game should also be a close one as well.

I take it that's your ripoff of O-H I-O?

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

does Tech even have a school song? couldn't hear much out of that band except a bit of drumming.
never mind, tomorrow we'll hear plenty of Forward Falcons and Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba. :D

Um, no. We don't make silly looking letters with our arms. Also, the BG and SU are said together, whereas the O H I O are said separately. We also generally get it going back and forth across the rink. So, no, it's not a rip off. We've been doing it a long, long time.

I agree Ferris is worse, and I guess I'm too used to the MAC. I stand corrected on the SU chant. Sounded like something else.
I thought the Gould, Holmstrom line played very well, and on defense Sweeney played well also.

I think if Tech can get a few more opportunities, BG will have to do something to help out their defense more instead of having those floaters out there. It might change the game.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Furne, Heinonen, Baltus, Vallis, and Anderson out for the forwards.
Davis out for the D.

Is Furne injured or has he just not made the cut these past games.
He would give us another sniper/finisher with the trouble scoring.

Pietila, D.Johnstone, Petan, Kero will decide if we play again tomorrow. Other than TK and DJ, the goals have been few and far between with our core group.

I believe we can still win this thing, but wow it will be tough now to get to GR which was the goal to start the season.
