Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

On the game winning goal I was wondering if Stebner could have stood Copp up or if that would have resulted in a breakaway chance.
I like our chances tonight as hopefully that OT loss gets us all pointed towards doing the things they need to do to get a W.

I don't think the d-man had time to stand Copp up. He wristed it from just inside the blueline as the d-man was approaching him.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

To put it simply:

This sh* ain't happening. Not for a few years, if not decades.

What a reach by BG fan. None of the schools mentioned have an interest in getting back into D1 hockey. Ohio and Kent State already bailed once. I loved the bit about moving the CCHA offices to Toledo. They ransacked the office in Farmington Hills, Mi. right after the last CCHA tourney game and distributed memorabilia to the teams and have a storage facility at BG I think for the remainder of the files. I'd focus on getting back to certain championship goals on the ice for the BG program before I would pronounce some underground mutiny to start another league. They made their bed, as wet and cold as it is.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

That was the only good outcome of the realignment was that the CCHA died.
The offices were a step up from a porta potty by the side of the road in that Suburban Sports laughfest.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Okay, so we've played a tough schedule to start the season and now we're in a hole at 1-6-1. Was it worth it?

Any predictions going into GLI? There are 12 games. I'm thinking splits with MSU, LSSU, AA, sweep Alaska, split Bemidji, sweep BG. That's 9-10-1. Win GLI again. Too optimistic?

Had to work at the last minute. I want to fire this stupid customer. *sigh*

I see we lost anyway. I think this team is road-weary and banged up. Finally, all the road time comes to an end and they can come home for a couple of weeks, maybe rest guys like Pietila and Leibinger that have been playing injured. Sova should be back soon, if the reports have been correct.

Sweeping State next weekend is a must to get this ship righted before we seriously dive into conference play, and it looks doable.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Fade, if Leibinger is injured, he sure did not show it. What a performance. If the other D coming in like Rostagno and Aut(?) are as good, we will be set. That was a big difference from the past, watching this weekend, our D is mobile, handle the puck well under pressure, and they are so good you don't notice them.

I wish our forwards played with more urgency last night, UM could have been had last night, but we just kept dumping the puck. Maybe the road legs caught up or all the penalty killing took its toll.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Tech looked very good Friday night. Last night everything seemed a little off. Pucks dribbling off their sticks, missed passes, flubbed shots, shooting high and wide. They really picked it up after they got the goal and came that close to getting it tied up. No puck luck at the end. Both games could very of easily gone Tech's way. Let's hope some home cooking next weekend brings a sweep. They sure need it.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I think it's important to keep the past month's performance in perspective. Other than the game the refs won in Indiana, this team performed very well against elite competition. The team is showing some depth, despite missing and injured players and our goaltending has been great. We all knew the season was very front-loaded and I think this team still will finish fairly high in the WCHA standings when all is said and done. I definitely wouldn't have predicted that Hietila and Liebinger would fill the scoring void the way the have. Once we start playing WCHA teams, I think the goal scoring will start to climb, as we'll start having 4/5 goal games instead of 1/2 goal games.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

This was my concern going into a tough non-conference schedule mostly all on the road. We start 1-6-1 and you have to wonder how the players confidence is. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but with the exception of the Sunday Notre Dame game we've been rioght there, and with a slightly better PP it's a completely different record. There should be plenty of optimism for the rest of the season.

Mel Pearson show summary for 11-04:
Tough weekend, feel for our players who played, well, hard with passion
Fine line between winning/losing, couldn't be more proud of them

Overall thoughts:
Ready to play, they were anxious, ready to go, scoring chances early, not getting that first goal
We're not finding the back of the net, Blake not 100%, credit to him, wants to play, Friday was his best game, number of NHL guys commented to Mel that he was our best player
Blake, D. Johstone, Petan, having some trouble scoring, playing well, creating opportunities, they'll go in eventually, on road other teams get last change and get the matchups they want
We played well, good scoring opportunities, got away from shooting puck in OT, 2x1 Rix decided to make pass, need to be more selfish and shoot
Give our team credit, gut wrenching loss Friday, right there, carried play, bounced back well Saturday, got off to a good start
Worked on being prepared this year, everyone is different in their preperation so it's on each individual, guys doing a good job, Northern game might be one exception

On Friday:
Mel - back when he was at MTU, they played MI at least 2 maybe 5 times in a season
Healthy rivalry, plenty of history, excited when they visit Houghton next year, good hockey team, Friday's game was one of best college hockey games Mel's been a part of
Down 1-0, Gissusseppi, Mel recruited him, great skater, good play, cut right in past Hanna
Haven't played with lead on road yet this year, hard playing from behind, offense hard to preach beacuse players tend to cheat, still creating chances, if we weren't Mel would be very concerend
Need to get a little more hungry around net, get gritty goals, offense will come. really like defensive play right now
2-0 after penalty expires, put us on our heels, puck hit Sweeney hits post and goes in net, good bounce for MI
these bad bounces will even themselves out, we'll get them later this year as long as we play the right way
Blake Pietila makes it 2-1, good PP goal, changed our PP this week, caught them off guard, good PPs Friday night
Eick SHG 2-2, real nice job pressuring dman at blueline, not many people can catch him, reminds Mel of John Madden at MI, holds career NCAA SHG record, emerging as one of better all around players, they had 5 forwards on PP
We had 7 freshmen going into Yost, 5/6 sophmores, young team playing well at Yost
Dirk - similarities to Conner, he had 8 SHG one year, Eick well on his way
Now we have to get CJ to score 5x5, he's a threat SHG, people scouting us will take notice of him
Dirk - do you worry about CJ, with his success, might forget defensive angle of PK?
Mel - No, he's honest player, have to play on right side of puck/defensve, even when it's 50/50 chance of getting puck, with our speed we'll get to pucks
3rd period entertaining, good hockey game, outshot them through 2 periods, good reffing, we were pressing for a win,
In 3rd: 16 shots MI, 8 for Tech, they were shooting shots from everywhere, Grade A chances fairly even in 3rd
We carried play in OT, Copp scores GWG, ref got in the way stopping a puck from getting deeper in their zone, allowed them tranistion back on offense, refs were in the way quite a bit this weekend, but refs did do a good job, good shot bad goal, Copley will stop that most of the time, did touch Stebners stick a little bit
Tough loss, we had our opportunities, didn't cash in on a few 2x1s, when you play a good game, agasinst a good opponent in a tough building, hope to come away with something
MTU PP 1x5, MI PP 0-4, Copley 40 saves, Nagelfoort 34 saves

On Saturday:
A couple unnecessary penalties, that gave MI momenteum at end of 1st, you'll kill good team penalties, less likely selfish ones
Had three straigh penalties late in 1st period, Want to play 5x5 because of our depth and PP not clicking
Numbers down on some of our top players, mainly because of PP struggles, played much better this weekend
Can't give MI PP, 30% coming into the weekend, go down 1-0 late in 1st, Copley would likely want to have it back, Mel watched replay on FS Detroit yesterday, Legacy comments that Copley was a little deep in his net
Good discipline this weekend, except for this time
Period 2, no scoring, Friday was so hard fought, Sat wasn't same pace of play, both teams played tighter defensively, not as much room, slower, energy level not up to Friday levels
Early in 3rd, MI makes it 2-0, because of 1st goal being short side, Copley may have overcorrected, they shot far side, bad angle shot
Liked how we responded, we didn't pack it in, Rix scores to make it 2-1, backhand shot
Coach Muckalt was talkign to Rix about scoring, he has one of better shots in practice, doesn't shoot as much in games, don't be afraid to shoot
Good hit by Vallis to cause MI to cough puck up to Rix
Great conditioning, outplayed them after that point, outshoot them 9-8
We had great opportunities, Heinonen came off wing, walks in and gets great shot, puck in crease, Rix should dive and chip it, tries to knock it in, but MI gets stick in way, that's difference right now
Just after that, Blake P, back door opportunity, not getting any luck right now
PP 0-6, didn't like it as much Sat, looked tired, slugish, too predictable, last PP was best of game, Hanna & D. Johnstone some great chances
OVerall, ton of credit to our team
Reason these teams were scheduled, wanted to play good teams, UMD, ND, MI, all played in NCAA tournaments recently, it'll help us down the road, going into WCHA, need to make sure same intensity is there playing WCHA teams
MI 1-9 on PP, really good, one of top PP in country, 13 NHL draft picks
We're not getting results, Mel came here to win, not to play close games/moral victories, it's a process, like the direction of this team/program

Alulmni function in Ann Arbor - nice to be on road see alumni, had one at UMD also, great turnout of fans Friday and Saturday, could hear Lets Go Huskies Friday
Mel spoke at function, great turnout, over 100 people, supportive, alot of alums proud of their connection to Tech, told them to be proud of this team, they'll give their best effort, even though W/L aren't adding up

MSU coming up this weekend, first time since 1984:
They're 3-3, good hockey team, improving program, Tom in his 3rd year also, 3-1 in last 4, getting healthy
Can't worry about goal scoring, need to play a rock solid game, it'll come
Fans come out and enjoy, they're a solid team led by 2 good goaltenders, hoping for another great crowd
Mel thinks they'll be chartering up here, hope for snow to make it a good experience for them

Blue line luncheon 11:30 Friday, Begg Center, Mel will be there with a few players, come ask questions and a nice lunch, see the Begg after the redesign, Murals/classic pictures of Tech players/trophys, bring your camera
Sponsored by Coaches Corners sandwhich shop
Mural unbelievable, Dirk's son amazed by it, some classic great players on it, D. Johnstone all over too, not sure how he got in so many pictures

Questions for Mel:
What are you doing on that 3rd linemate with Eick/Rix, it's changed a lot?
Left them together because they play well together and they play PK together. Will likely continue rotating guys in there, have also messed with Eick playing on different lines. Probably will leave Eick/Rix together and keep trying different guys there.

What does MSU bring to the table?
They're in transition, a few years back defensvie. NOw trying to open it up a bit, more offensve skill guys that can skate, move the puck. Right now, looking to open it up a little bit. Will be sound defensively.

On top end guys sturggling:
Just a matter of time, they're too good. You know they can do it. Some of it's puck luck, Blake has to get healthy. We just have to hit the net instead of aim for perfect spot.
The last 3 MI goals were just shots, not aiming.

With questionable goals on Pheonix, does it give Phillips a shot?
No question, Copley real good on Friday, except last one. Have to stop ones you should stop. Right now 1 goal is so important, so many 1 goal games for us. Everything magnified when you give up a goal.

So many 2 goal defecits we've come back from. It takes a lot of energy to play from behind. Havnen't played with lead on the road yet this year.

Encourage everyone to get ticekts this wknd. It'll be exciting, the wins will come. Come support this team, NMU was a great crowd.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Many thanks for the comprehensive reporting, mtu_huskies!

"Haven't played with lead on road yet this year" I do think it was a mistake to schedule so many road games against tough teams this early in the season. It makes the rest of the season an uphill climb.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Unfortunately, if we want a challenging OOC schedule, we don't have much of a choice on the dates. Ultimately, it seems the powerplay has been the biggest problem. Trying to replace Seigo, who basically ran it for almost all four of his years, with freshmen and sophomore defensemen has proven difficult early on. It hasn't been for lack of chances - they are 3/48 after eight games this year, compared to finishing 30/143 last year. So that's currently 6.2%, versus the 21% we ended with last year. It's a huge difference.

The powerplay will improve as the season progresses, I agree with Mel they are close. They've had 2 of those powerplay goals come in the past 3 games. I, for one, wasn't expecting one-goal games at Yost. The PK looks improved early on, very close to the 85%+ threshold we'd prefer to see, compared to last year's 80%.

It would have been nice if we could have hosted UMD this year or played someone at home instead of going to Notre Dame but what can you do? There are not a lot of options, we certainly could have tried to schedule a series with an ECAC/AHA team but it didn't happen.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I wouldn't expect any eastern teams in the next few seasons, but you never know. Next year, we will only have 36 games, since (I believe) we'll travel to one Alaska school. So we'll host Duluth and Michigan, plus burn two more NC games at the GLI. With 28 conference games, that leaves one series, and we recently learned that we're not reciprocating with State until 2015/2016. So it remains to be seen who we can land for that fourth NC series.

The way I interpret the fact that the Michigan State trip is going to be 2015/2016 is that the coaching staff wants to get an easier, possibly home NC series instead. I would guess we'll see a Mercyhurst, Canisius, Niagara, or Robert Morris. An AHA team that is on the western side of the conference, not named Air Force. I don't have a problem with this strategy, as it will be nice to have a variety of competition in NC, as opposed to only very high end competition....OK, so "high end" doesn't exactly describe MSU, but you know what I mean. :p

sounded like the decision was on Michigan State's end, not Michigan Tech's. I believe we're going to Wisconsin either next year or the year after. vs UMD, @ UW, vs Mich, GLI would be tough but at least 4 are at home.

EDIT: http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/201...ogether-the-2013-14-wisconsin-hockey-schedule

According to Andy Johnson, MTU is playing at Wisconsin next season. I believe it was reported by Andy Baggot as well. With the MSU dates getting shifted back, it makes sense that it's replaced by UW, since I knew UW was in the plans but I had thought it was 2015-16

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Mel still seems very upbeat. My takeaway from the UM series was that Friday we played well enough to win and it was a real shame that they did not get rewarded.
Saturday, they were off as the team kept having the puck fall off the sticks. We probably lost 10 more scoring chances due to sloppy puck control.
Tech has a lot if talent, but they still need to learn how to win. I was hoping for A 5-4-1 start after dropping record expectations after the Notre Dame series.
I think Gould and Baltus need to be back this weekend.

Go Tech, hopefully we can now get on roll, fill the MaC, play to win this weekend.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I liked how Sturos played on friday night. I haven't seen Baltus or Gould. I would have thought Gould would be better than last year. However Holmberg is so good on faceoffs, I think he will get another go.
I've been thinking about UNH's point about the top guys getting going. I guess that's the 64,000 dollar question. They were just missing this last weekend. I really think Both Kero and Petan are poised to suddenly start scoring. I especially think Kero is almost there with his game.

Last week I watched the lowell/ MSU game and it was particularly boring. Lowell got the first goal and basically was very patient and eventually pulled away. It was a terrible game to watch.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Going to get to the games this weekend. Won't get to see them play too much this year, due to schedules, and saving money for the wedding.

We'll be leaving tonight after work. Meeting up with my sister and her boyfriend (both are also Tech alums) in Ashland for beer and dinner, then probably rolling into Houghton at around 1AM. Should be a fun weekend.
