Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Tech will have a good team next year if Pietila, Kero and Johnstone can get healthy and provide the leadership on the ice they are capable of. They've all been pretty beat up this season and the offense suffered. I hear that Blake probably should have had shoulder surgery last fall but tried to play through it all year rather than miss a lot of time.

Petan also slumped in the second half of this season - had a handful of assists, but no goals since Jan 11 at Ferris.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Growing as players, growing as a team, and growing as a program are completely different things.

The major issue with this team was on-ice leadership. The returning upperclassmen need to act like a captain. I think Mr. Pietala did his team a disservice by his on-ice action and performance at times and it affected the team. I also think that many of the underclassmen grew as players this year. Sturos, Hanna, Neville, Eick, Leibinger all had better than expected seasons.

We as a fan base also need to keep in perspective the fact that Mel as a first time head coach, is still finding his way a little bit too in building the program. If you want to compare to Hastings in Mankato, he has been a head coach already and has some of the experience that Mel doesn't, thus the quicker turnaround. There is no doubt in my mind that Mel will get us to a Tournament appearance in the next couple seasons. His positive attitude has a lot to do with that.

Yes, this season was disappointing from a record and a conference finish perspective, but considering the gauntlet non-con schedule for a young team and the up and down with injuries, they did exactly what an inconsistent team with shaky on-ice leadership and some talent would do. Lots of work to do, but it begins this offseason with the players. They have to be more mentally tough, especially the upperclassmen. Mel also needs to get them prepped for what will be another tough non-con. Anything less than .500 during the non-con will be tough to swallow this time around.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Well one things for sure, there were more tough, tough losses this year than I can ever remember. We even had a tough tie.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

Bob Mancini left in part, because he felt like we as a fan base had unrealistic expectations.
So asking our team to be above .500 and win GLI every 3rd or 4th year is unrealistic? Any coach who can't get his team to win more than half of their games isn't much of a coach. If Mancini said that, he's an idiot...

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

This year's team was very average, a step backwards from last year's team. Inconsistent and no offense. At least last year they won the GLI.

Has the 2014-15 schedule been released yet? Another sub .500 season will be unacceptable.

Intersting note on success failure. I know rpi isn't the greatest measure but here are the rpi (and krach) rankings of MTU the last 3 seasons:
2011-2012: 35 (30)
2012-2013: 47 (41)
2013-2014: 35 (34)

I posted about this a few months ago, and it is still true. We can see improvements among underclassmen all **** day long, but until Tech's players stop hitting some wall after their sophomore years and actually take it to the next level as upperclassmen, this program will never be where we want it to be. I have seen it ever since I started watching Tech hockey, with the exception of 1 season. The upperclassmen fade, and we say, well, look at player X who is a sophomore, he's really going to be good!

The treadmill is gone, right? I say it's the scoreboard's fault.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I must say I'm disappointed with the Tech posters on this thread.

Every post since the BG series started has harped on the reasons why Tech LOST this series...underachievement, lack of leadership, pansy officials, etc.

Not one single person gave BG any credit.

I prefer to think the you didn't LOSE the series as must as we WON it. I would have thought that hockey folks such as you would be better able to see that.

I'm disappointed in you.

That is all.

PS: LOVE your band. What they lack in size is MORE than compensated by their spirit, enthusiasm and camaraderie. Half the time we can't even get our band to show up at home games. My hat's off to them, especially the tube players who made guest appearances with BG's band Saturday.

You're dense. We're not talking about the series last weekend, we're talking about this season. Now go change your drool rag, you're making a mess.

get used to it, every team in this league does that. It used to bother me when other teams' fans acted that way, now I just accept it.

You are a classless fukstick, and clearly not representative of the type of individual I would expect to find associated with an institution as well respected as the one you claim to be affiliated with. If I HAD a drool rag, I'd slap you across the face with it, and be willing to bet that the vast majority of Tech fans would applaud me for the effort.

I get upset when fans of other teams run their mouths about **** they don't know about. Which is exactly what you did. "I'm disappointed in you" -what kind of complete bull**** is that? You condescending *******. If you knew what we're talking about, you'd know, we're not upset with the last weekend, it was the entire season that this team underachieved, and they did underachieve!

Sadly, this is exactly the type of individual I'd expect from someone associated with the institution as the one you claim to be affiliated with.

Also, sign your neg rep, you gutless coward.

Re: Michigan Tech 2013-2014: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Realignment

I really wish tech did better this year. I was really scared of them coming to BG because...well you know, the last time they came here. I can't speak how well the team did for the entire season, but you guys were good when you played us. And I watched the GLI and was really happy you guys won that.

Anyway, good luck next season!

I stand by all previous comments, and feel quite positive that bigblu's response proves my point. Suggest you get back on your meds before you hurt yourself.

Visitors Guide to BG.
{snip}
Enjoy your stay.
Thank you for the visitor's guide to Bowling Green. I've never been to BC or the University but I hear it's nice.

Now here's a visitor's guide to the Tech thread:
1) Tech fans are passionate about their hockey team.
2) Our hockey program is 50 years older than BG's.
3) We won National Championships back in the 70s, which I'm sure is before you were born.
4) The MTU hockey program has been terrible for the past 33 years. Once again probably longer than you've been breathing.
5) Mel Pearson played for Tech back when the Huskies were competitive.
6) Mel is the great hope for the Tech fan base. If he can't turn things around, we're sunk.
7) Mel's record his first three years is less than .500 and the trend is flat. We're not happy.
8) This thread has run the entire season and has nothing to do with our opponent's hockey. Usually, there's a separate thread for each series.
9) You're welcome to read this thread but it's best to keep your comments focused on the Huskies. Please don't start a food fight.
10) If you're expecting to find analysis of your team here, you're in the wrong place.

I wish you the best but we don't care about your team. See you next fall.
