Michigan Tech 2012-13 Preseason Thread: Draft picks, video feeds, and Mel, oh my

Re: Michigan Tech 2012-13 Preseason Thread: Draft picks, video feeds, and Mel, oh my

Kudos to THG for the nice job on the website updates. I really like the new color coding on the recruiting grid.

Has anyone else noticed the rash of 2012/13 NMU recruits that won't be coming to Marquette this season?
Looks like Shane Sooth, Gerard Hanson, Brock Maschmeyer and possibly goalie Michael Doan will either be staying in Juniors or decommiting.
Add that to the loss of Gron and Florek, and it seems like we'll have 2 pretty sure non-conf wins this year.

Why is that? I know I heard something about NMU or the coach recently in passing, but forget what the news was. Or maybe it was just that they lost these recruits? Davy?

actually - I think what I was remembering was a comment on their curious attraction to Calumet High players and that it doesn't speak well for the future of their program if this is their main recruiting ground. (half kidding)

BPH already beat me to starting a new thread, but I'll give this thread a subtitle:
"New Season, New Look, New Players, New THG, New Jerseys, New Ice, New Hope... Home Ice for the Playoffs. Period."

Just a reminder that if you signed up for the video feed last year it will auto renew unless you proactively cancel it.

I was reading the USCHO article on the new NHL CBA and how it would impact college hockey. Part way through I found this gem:
"[NHL commissioner] Gary Bettman is obviously interested in seeing college hockey succeed, because it helps his sport."
The best way Gary can help the NHL succeed is to retire and never return. How a former NBA exec ever got into his position still amazes me.

And this one in bold type as well:
"What I have always said is hockey is a small world. If the communication could just be at the forefront of everything, I think a lot of this could be alleviated.” – Miami coach Enrico Blasi
So says the guy who enabled a new college hockey conference in secret and steamrolled the Western half of NCAA hockey. Maybe that would have been a good time to try out that "communication" thing you're such a fan of using. What a two face tool.

I think fans dislike him more for being a former NBA exec then any other reason. For the niche NHL he's done a decent job and the CBA issues would happen with or without him.

The recruit losses seem mostly to be lousy luck for NMU....no particular pattern.

I graduated from Calumet and I think the school is getting recruitment attention from NMU because the school's produced a disproportionate number of elite players for a small, public school that draws from a small population. That can be attributed to a good junior hockey program, a strong hockey culture and good coaching. Way more CHS grads have played for Tech than NMU,

NMU is trying to build a relationship to reverse that trend and maybe get the next Ben Johnson.

Sooth will play another year of Junior, then come next fall. Doan is on campus and will likely be the backup. Not sure about Maschmeyer. And Hanson won't be coming.

Like the bumper sticker says..."You're Either From Cal or You Wanna Be !!"

Obviously, Calumet is not NMU's main recruiting ground, but Walt will recruit any U.P. kid who he thinks has potential to play D1 hockey.
