ummmmm, Northeastern still plays at Matthews Arena...

it's still called that. (And I've never been there myself but) I heard the rink is new. Plus, "oldest ice arena in America" t-shirts sell a lot better than the "2nd oldest ice rink" ones did.

It's been burned down and torn down during the years. By their definition, the Dee would actually hold the record.

that's a good point. I wonder if Marquette would put ice in the old Palestra, would that hold the record?

Huh, the Wikipedia page doesn't mention that, but maybe the page is only for the most recent incarnation of Matthews. According to the page, it was built in 1910, and it doesn't say anything about being torn down or rebuilt. Maybe Wiki is wrong, which is certainly possible.

edit: the information on NU's page mention 2 fires, but doesn't go into details.

if you are in the area GO TO THIS GAME! the Amory is full of history and old photos and old time hockey. its really a fun place to visit. dress warmly - its cold in there. stop by Pat's foods and look at the hockey pictures in beer/wine section (coincidence?). after the game go to Rocky's (formerly Randy's) - lots (and lots and lots) of old hockey pictures, cheap beer, free popcorn and Moscow Mules. you won't regret the experience. its fun!

1918 - The formal ice hockey program is suspended due to World War I. The team resumed play in 1919, but went back to playing at outdoor rinks and at the Pavilion Rink across from MIT, as the Boston Arena burned down in the fall of 1918. The Arena would be rebuilt and re-open in the fall of 1921.

I would like to take a moment to remember the late Notre Dame hockey coach, Charles "Lefty" Smith, who died on Tuesday. Shirtless Guy posted memories of Lefty last March that are identical to mine: "Notre Dame was in the WCHA all four years I was at Tech. They were decent but not great and it was a friendly rivalry. I got a kick out of our little school beating them on a regular basis. I remember coach Lefty Smith used to give a sharp whistle for the line changes which was followed by a chorus of whistling from the fans."

There's an excellent article in the South Bend Tribune about Coach Smith that's worth reading. He was one of those coaches, along with Coach Macinnes, who made the WCHA so great in the 70s.

I think that if a nacho team comes to Houghton for the playoffs in the next two years we host it at the DEE for old times sake.
