Michigan Tech 17-18 Preseason - MacNaughton, Broadmoor... What's this year bringing?

Re: Michigan Tech 17-18 Preseason - MacNaughton, Broadmoor... What's this year bringi

Alabama-Huntsville was for sure the better team tonight. Gotta give credit where credit is due.
Better goaltending too. Can't be giving up 3 or 4 goals a game and expect to win in the league. Night and day difference from how we played last night. Time to regroup.
Funny, listening to Coach Shawhan after the game he thought Tech played better tonight than Friday night? Unless I misunderstood what he was saying.

0 for 8 and giving up a shorty, that pretty much says it all.

yeah, doesn't mean they didn't play better...I could see that. they earned a ton of penalties. Had some chances, just didn't finish tonight and defensively had some bad moments, but overall, I could see that.

Well I guess no one is worried about giving up a point on the road to LSSU when we only manage a split at home vs UAH. Next weekend is already shaping up to be a must win weekend if Tech wants to stay in the Cup race for this season.

Was there a Joe Show yesterday? Did anyone tune in if there was?

I see THG's series preview with MSU is out and predicting a sweep by Mankato. Unfortunately I have to agree. After taking in the games up in Houghton this past weekend I'm in a mood to revise my glass half full prognosis to one of half empty. The PK, as has already been noted, was beyond words awful! And Packy is simply put... scary. That is not just me. Several other people I talked to voiced that same opinion. He seemed to be fighting the puck both games. The rebounds he gives up are just crazy. Pucks that any other goalie seems to suck up in padding are bouncing all over the place. He likes to wander, and falling down on the back of the net while playing the puck does little to inspire confidence..

Least this be all negative I would say that I was really happy with what I saw in Reitmeier. For a kid that sounded like a project, he skates very well. When he grows into that body he should be a great player. L'Esperance has come to play this year. He is simply a beast on the puck, taking two a three guys to get after him. And Gould has elevated his game as well. And the Freshman D look to be solid most of the time. But until that goaltending tightens up and the PK figures it out there aregoing to be some very frustrating games..

It's easy to be down but lets not forget how young they actually are right now. This team got off to a surprisingly good start but they will struggle at times. Shawhan isn't afraid to throw the young guys into special teams and its been good and bad so far for them. I'm excited to watch tomorrow night's game in person where its easier for me to pay attention to who's out there in various situations. That was really interesting to see at the Icebreaker. Too bad Friday might be the last game I get to see in person...

I have confidence the Shawhan and his guys will find a way to improve that PK. He took the blame for their struggles stating that guys were not picking up the reads as instructed in his show on monday. They definitely need to figure things out. Hopefully Packy can get back on track, although he's never really looked spectacular yet. He's made some great saves but at the same time there always seem to be moments that are far more difficult than they "should" be for him. Not really sure who to blame on that. MSU will certainly be a difficult challenge and predicting a sweep by the Mavericks might be a little harsh but its also probably the most likely outcome.

(Also posted in WCHA thread) In other news, a guy name Will Sterrett came up with the idea of attending at least one game in each WCHA arena this season. His journey (which he's labeled "Chasing MacNaughton") starts Friday in Mankato. We asked him to write about it at THG so keep an eye out as he goes through this journey of traveling across the country to watch games at each WCHA building. His plan is to watch MTU @ MSU Friday and FSU @ BSU Saturday. We're excited to see where this takes us.

As I replied to his twitter @OnAirWill it's been on my bucket list for a long time. I'm sure he will enjoy the season. His plan is to be in Houghton for Winter Carnival.

Maybe not down on them. More like expectations coming back to reality a little bit. After a great start expectations went up. As you note it's a young team playing at least 5 freshman and Bryce on any given night. Growing pains are to be expected. There were times Saturday that Tech completely controlled the play and zone time. Then a couple of shifts later they looked like a team that would never get out of their own zone. Hopefully the consistency comes with more experience.

Coach Joe likes to compare Misiak to Eick. And it is easy to see why. A couple of times I thought I was still looking at Eick out there. Cooper Watson looked a little tentative his first couple of shifts then seemed to settle in. Brice is playing very well. I take all three of those things as positives.

So, while I figure we get swept. I will keep my fingers crossed that some of the troubles are fixed and we manage at least a split.. Go HUSKIES!

Interesting, Neviille and Sturos put on PK clinics every Friday and Saturday night.
Tech using Jackson, Steman, Luchinni, and Baltus on PK vs Huntsville.
Luch and Jackson are offensive threats to get a shorty, however the main goal is keeping the puck out of the net on the PK.
I would like to see Steman, Beretta, Brice, and Russell/Blacklock as the PK specialists.

This team is more fun to watch than past year as they can flat out score. I see a shootout in at least one of the weekend games by which I mean a 7-6 final.

Tech will get some point/s this weekend. Go Huskies!

Defense wins championships, and we like those.

No question we have some growing to do, but if Bg can beat them, so can we.I would agree with fade that defense is more important and we have been giving up 3 per game. I also think it's important to develop some depth because in January playing 4 games in 6 nights we will need it, and all four of those games are important.

My thought is that Pucky didn't get on the rosters in Vermont and especially DU by being a poor goalie. Maybe it is a confidence issue with the new team and the pressure of trying to win the job, but I still feel like he will be the horse Tech is riding down the stretch as the season moves along.
