Michigan State 2009-2010

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

I can't speak to the one loss to Miami, but having been in Maine - that second game, MSU didn't play nearly as well as the first game, and Maine played better than they had. I'm not sure penalties are the only reason.

I don't think the penalties are the reason, I think they're a symptom. It's a young team that's still adjusting to faster paced consecutive games. The penalties come from mental fatigue late in the second game. As the team continues to mature these things will clear themselves up. At least they're not straddled with a losing record to increase the fatigue.

I find it interesting that, for the 3rd week in a row, we've got an undefeated opponent. Seems to have been the prescription so far ;)

Actually you want to get cute about it all 4 so far have had "perfect" records. heh

Well analyzed! Not something I ever thought of, but it makes a whole boatload of sense

Didn't the Grassi penalty game fairly early in the first period of the first game? And I believe (correct me if I am wrong) the face-washing calls at Miami did as well. I dont think the penalties in question were from fatigue, more than likely inexperience. At least there weren't any too many men penalties this weekend, Those drive me nuts.

Checking the box scores, the Grassi penalty came 2:05 into the second vs. Western on Friday, and the face-washing penalties (on the box score they're called 'grasping the facemask' - too funny) came in the second and third periods of the first game vs. Miami.

I hate too many men penalties too. That's just a bad case of the stupids right there ... :p

Grabbing the facemask can also be a major and a game.... Ahhh, rules.

One thing about penalties ... You don't want the players to be so afraid to get a penalty that they back off too much. Just sayin'. :D

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

It's tough for a young team to up its physical play while avoiding penalties. You just have to hope that they stay disciplined and avoid retaliatory penalties and taking penalties in the offensive zone.

All in all, you have to be pleasantly surprised with the play of this team so far. The Miami weekend was encouraging and sort of validated the wins against weaker opponents in the early season.

For me, the most encouraging play came this past weekend when they took care of business against Western. Comley has had a tough time at Lawson, even with strong teams, and MSU is 23-20-2 all time there.

Bring on the hot dogs and hockey!

I have to be in Traverse City on Friday, is there a link for streaming audio?

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

This is almost wierd. Maybe the secret to success under Comley is low expectations

Oh come on - plenty of seats on the bandwaon.

OK, MSU last won 4 in a row 11/30/07-12/8/07, Lake State and Ferris St. (not from memory).

"I hate Thursday games... I hate Thursday games... I hate Thursday games... I hate Thursday games... I hate Thursday games..."

Rick (and I'm citing directly from his presser), I know that you have a love for Thursday games. But, for the love of god - Hollis, Comley, and anybody else affiliated with some sort of power-job within our hockey program - avoid Thursday games at all costs from here on out.

Noon football game, 'ya say? Play the second game of the hockey series at 8:30p on Saturday night - problem solved.

Attendance tonight was dismal - a really, really generous 3,900.

I am certain that we could be playing the Swedish All-Nude Female Hockey Babe-Stars on a Thursday night, and we'd still have trouble drawing flies to horse dung. I was expecting attendance to be pretty horrid tonight, but that was the worst draw I've seen for a conference game in four years here.

And frankly, I don't expect the numbers for Notre Dame in two weeks to be any better.

Aside from that, we played a picture-perfect game of hockey tonight. Darn good performance.

3 thoughts:

1. This defense is young and reatively inexperienced, but I have yet to feel like they are overwhelmed. They look very comfortable picking up assignments in the defensive end. I have not been this comfortable with the defensive core of a Spartan squad since the Andrew Hutchinson days...seriously, we have had an endless supply of goalies to stand on their head...but now the defense is doing their job.

2. Derek Grant is sick! Quick hands and the ability to read a play before it happens and be in the right place at the right time...these are hockey instincts that are usually developed over years but stall for a bit when the faster college game arrives. This guy is on pace to set several MSU freshman records, and I dont believe anything will stop him . The sky is the limit for this kid.

3. I trust Rick Comley. Everybody knows I support this guy, but I think the early success this season confirms his legitimacy as a quality coach. He is coaching an "average" team into a "good" team. The ability to put together quality top 6 combinations and find chemistry with newcomers is a real gift.

I have been quiet because I dont want to get too excited if this is just an aboration. But I really believe this team can compete in the CCHA. If they win the games they are supposed to win and steal a few that they are not supposed to have a chance at, they will be wildly successful.

including a beautiful example of teamwork between Mssrs. Chelios, Walrod and Hayes. That was a nice goal :)

On your other point, I just can't stand the silence.

Glad you're weighing in. So much going on offensively that I don't know if anyone's had time to comment on the disappearance of Leveille.

Defense was really at its best tonight, Palmissano did stop 31 shots, but I don't think UNO had a lot of good looks aside from the breakaway shorthanded chance and a couple others.

Re: Michigan State 2009-2010

These Spartans look awesome. I think we can mix it up this year!

As for attendance... who cares. Sorta. It is what it is. There's not much that those posting here can do about that.

The student section has some extra teeth and pep to it tonight. Hat's off.

A. Allen brought it hard during Everybody's and actually had a fair portion of the students join in. My SO asked if you would feel like they were stealing your thunder. I told her not at all. That's what he's shooting for, and there's not a one of them that can match him move for move. BTW, those were some nasty bruises on the backs of your calf muscles. Dance related injury?

We now make a habit of watching 2nd intermission activity in aisle of Section V/W from our home in Section T.

If I'm not mistaken, AAP did make the point some time back that it would take a considerable amount of winning to bring'em back and blot out the memory of 08/09. I'm also not panicking ... just getting the word out to my colleagues at work and such and planting the seeds.

I hear ya... But it's not the poor play that emptied the building IMO. Go to www.zillow.com and look at the property values in East Lansing over the past 5 years. Look at unemployment in Mid-Michigan. $200 to take a family of 4 to Munn for a weekend series isn't going to happen. Period. End of discussion.

I'm not saying that demand hasn't gone down (right or wrong). But couple any drop in demand with ticket, parking, and vending prices that the market can't bear and you've got your attendance crash at Munn. Hanging banners won't hurt, that's for sure. But as long as the economy is what it is and prices are what they are, 4K-5K is going to be the norm.
