Michigan Hockey 22-23, new coach, new players, new era

That game Friday was actually quite good- Michigan pressured Minnesota quite a bit. But where they really had issues was puck control- so many times the puck just rolled off their stick in various situations that it really caused problems- lots of great chances were not able to be taken because of that, and I swear I saw that happen on one of the odd man rushes that scored. So close to getting and not allowing chances.

Alas, every big mistake we made, the Gophers were able to jump all over it and bury it.

I was hoping that post horn goal would energize the team, as it was a great one- but it took quite a while to get that chance to make it real. And with all of the puck luck problems, they still closed it late in the 3rd.

Encouraging, but I'm sure frustrating for the players. And I'm going to suggest that the play for the extra players should help the depth as the season goes on.

Saw in the news that the very happy football team stopped at the game. Nice treat for those there.

I wonder how much of that was an impulse. Bus pulls up to Schembechler Hall, they notice a full parking lot, think, 'hey there's a hockey game happening, let's share our excitement'

I had not been to a game at Yost for about 5 years....until Saturday. The mood in the building was already good. When the football team filed in the crowd went bonkers. Great moment!

Big opportunity for conference points this weekend. Wisconsin has been struggling this season.

Does anyone know the status on the team's health? I just looked over the Michigan Daily article previewing the weekend which had the statement "Getting back out on the road with almost the entire roster healthy once again". So that sounds promising.

I saw a similar hint at mgoblog. I think it was based on an interview with one of the Fantili’s.

I thought Michigan would be better at this point in the season. They have the talent, so why are they underperforming?

They were sick for quite a while, and it might impact the quality of practice.

But even so, a quick start followed by a level off before Christmas is pretty common here. No idea why it keeps happening.

Good pre-second half season game there. And a really good illustration why we don't participate in the GLI anymore. Having so many players gone that we only had 3 forward lines plus the third string goalie to play forward (and a D, too)- you could see them really not be all together.

Tough game, but good on them to stay in it and finish with a win.

Michigan doesn't play in the GLI anymore because they aren't invited. That's the "I" part.

For someone so obsessed with the University of Michigan, it's curious that you don't know that Michigan was co-host of the tournament from '76 until '21. So no need for the invitation. How can you not be aware of that fact?

Kinda sucks that we are not part of it anymore, but given that it had to move from Detroit- the whole point of the tournament changed. So it's not the worst thing- especially that we will be short so many players. So many that we didn't field a complete line up for the game last night. Oh, well- not the worst problem in the world to have.

Even as “co host”, were disinvited. By the host school.

Some heads up for this weekend's games:
First, this is the official 100th Anniversary weekend- both games
Second- non-normal game times- Friday is at 6:30pm, Saturday is 4:30pm- so don't be late.

You have a different explanation?

I had an explanation, but what's the point? There's no way that I'm going to change your mind, so you are welcome to feel however you feel.

I'll still like Tech thanks to my dad, but I don't see you doing anything other than hating Michigan. There's my explanation.

He does not. There is nothing wrong with the team per se. Some supporters who suggest it is Gods gift to college hockey - continually- however require feedback. Michigan was disinvited to the GLI because they did not maintain their obligations during the last one, and were not transparent about why. It isn’t about “feelings”. It’s what happened. So please stop pretend MI made a decision about participation. It was made for them.

I enjoyed the GLI when it was at the Joe. Pizzarena being shared with the Pistons, I can see where scheduling gets tricky. On campus was dumb. If it's gonna be a tourney, it should be a tourney. I want to watch 4 games.

For Michigan with the timing always having us down guys to World Juniors, it's tough, especially when it's not 1 or 2 guys but 5 or 6. It makes sense to not particpate.

It makes me sad though. As a part time Tech fan, GLI was my chance to cheer the Huskies (when they weren't facing UofM).

vandal, thanks for the heads up about weekend game timing. I miss 7:30 starts. For those of us that commute, it is hard to get to a game by 6:30. I tend to leave work early on Fridays, but my husband can't. He usually gets home around 6, to then drive to Yost and find parking..ugh. 7 pm starts we get there during the banner or at puck drop and that's with hurrying and no time for dinner.

This Tech fan doesn't blame U of M for not wanting to be a part of it. With several players at World Juniors and the hit one's PairWise could take, it makes sense for them at this time. That said, a wild chimpanzee could have been more diplomatic than the former U of M and MTU coach handled things.
