Miami at RPI, 1/2/15

Re: Miami at RPI, 1/2/15

Good guys made a game of it at the end, but this isn't horseshoes, and close doesn't count. :(

Re: Miami at RPI, 1/2/15

Got back in time to see our pitiful 5 on 3 near the end. A few questions-for a coach who is quick to pull his goaltender, why not pull him to go 6 on 3 then? Also, MU called time out and we had the chance to put our best scoring line out for the 5 on 3 yet the Melanson line was not out there even though rested. Why? They were the only line all night that was doing anything resembling pressure. Just color me confused.

Oh well. And Flaggy, I read your post when I wasn't logged in so I saw it. If you were trying to insult me by saying my pbp stinks, it didn't work. Considering I have done pbp a grand total of of two times in what is now my 11th season of broadcasting men's games, I really don't care who's better than me at pbp. There are reasons why I only want to do color mainly, one of which is a limitation on an important human sense.

Good points Doc. They didn't get a good look, much less a good shot. Same 'ol result.

I missed much of the middle part of the game but Jen tells me our defense made many horrible decisions and spent more time trying to pass back and forth behind the net. You cannot allow a good forechecking team in on you like that and it will cost you sooner or later. But i did see the 5 on 3-and of course we lost the crucial face offs and then just passed back and forth out near the blue line which is never the way to run a two man advantage. I have to give this team a ton of credit-without so many of our players in the line up, we made a game of this one. But we still managed to give up the first goal, take too many penalties, turnover the puck deep in our zone often, and do absolutely nothing with the gift of a two man advantage(which should have been a 3 man advantage). Just frustrated but not by the boys who played their hearts out.

Great point on the pulling of the goalie. He usually pulls him quicker when we are down 4-1.

And I'm pretty sure that it was RPI''s timeout at the onset of the 5 on 3. So, more confusion.

I suspect it is because you need more time to score three goals than one.

Zero excuse-with 2:30 left and 5 on 3 for 1 minute and then 5 on 4 for the rest-you pull your goalie to go 6 on 3. You put 2 big bodies in front of the goal and 4 guys circling around. There is very little defense for that. But, you need to win the face off!!!! Makes no sense to not do that.

One thing to remember, with pulling the goalie on a power play, is that the other team is allowed to ice the puck, so you don't have the liberty of the red line (technically you don't anyway, as a puck shot from 190 that goes in isn't icing), which teams usually go for to prevent icing and get the game over with. I'm sure that's why the goalie wasn't pulled on the 5x3.

Dude: You do not honestly believe that would stop SA from pulling his goalie? I have been harsh on him in the past for pulling him far too early or in a meaningless down 4-1 situation. I felt it was a blown opportunity in several ways. Not pulling the goalie and not having your best scoring line up out there and not having that extra big body to put in front of the goal. The way our Power Play works, it might not have made a bit of difference, but not doing it just made no sense to me.

Considering he pulled the goaltender on the 5x4, obviously not. However, the EA is a calculated risk, especially when you also consider the amount of open ice given the number of people there. That being said, Appert has pulled the goalie for a 6v3, and incidentally enough vs. Miami. No EA, and no EN. As for personnel, IMO, the unit that should have been out there was the unit the scored a power play goal to begin the second period. I don't recall if that was the unit on the ice.
