Merrimack Offseason: ya, so that was fun.........

Re: Merrimack Offseason: ya, so that was fun.........

I was able to catch 6-7 MC games this year. I'd be more worried about Heywood leaving after this year than I would be Flanigan, Bigos or Stollery.

Zero chance Heywood is getting asked to leave.

Re: Merrimack Offseason: ya, so that was fun.........

I'd love to get some talk going here about the incoming class. I've seen some video on YouTube of F Josh Myers from the Langely Chiefs and he looks like the real deal (as much as any 3:00 of video highlights is worth, anyway).

Da Costa will be very tough to replace, but if we keep improving the *overall* talent of each new class that could help offset that loss. Is there any hope that one of these freshmen could make a similar impact to what Da Costa did in his freshman year? Obviously Da Costa is one in a million, but if we got someone who was even 75% the player he is, I think we could be fine.

Also, this is my first post here. Great to see such a lively MC discussion!

You cant replaced DaCosta in my opinon. It will take a few guys to step it up. The most off recruit is Myers. Overager but from a very good league and most of their recruits are overagers. Myers as long as he can skate with ncaa talent could play with Todd and Collins I think on the wing and move Todd to C to make that first line and use Madsen/Sheen/Flanny underneath them. Then you have guys like Velleca and Heffernan and Bates and Bly ti fill out the bottom 6.

Welcome!
Da Costa was a rare talent. One poster went as far as to say he may have been the second/third best player he had ever seen in Hockey East (behind Gionta and Kariya). Maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea.
I'd love to see Bly and Bates together next year, with someone else with their kind of speed (Myers? Toomey?) That could be a really fun line.
Federal League, an excellent poster and BU blogger, picks the Warriors 3rd in his early look at next year. I think from 3rd-5th is not unreasonable.

I honestly thought a drop off to 5-7. The only thing is that the rest of the league could be brutal.

Re: Merrimack Offseason: ya, so that was fun.........

He was a good one for sure but the poster must have missed Leetch and many others. He would fall into maybe the top 25 or 30. Some great ones have been there before.

Exactly. Normally, you would expect a drop off after losing Da Costa and these seniors, and I think there will be in the team's play, but I don't think there will be in the standings because everyone else except for probably BU is gonna drop off, too. When looking ahead to next year, I'd rather look at what teams have coming back and coming in than what they have going out. When I look at it right now, I think I like what Merrimack is gonna have more than I like what NU, UNH and Maine are gonna have. Merrimack's freshman class looks on paper to be one of the best in the league. I see next year as BU and BC battling for first and then MC, NU, UNH and Maine battling for 3-6. I obviously reserve the right to change my pick before next season, but right now I give MC the slight edge over those other 3. I expect MC to be right in the home-ice race pretty much every year for the foreseeable future. It doesn't appear that Dennehy is going to fall into the four-year cycles that UML has been stuck in for so long.

Velleca will be an impact player next year. Mark my words. He played great down the stretch. I really think you could see him on a line with Todd and Collins.

I like his speed and what he brings on offense but he absolutely is terrible in his own end. Maybe the worst defensive player on the entire team. He committs to being more of 2way player and he would bring his game to another level. I think.

I wouldn't go that far. He saw some PK time at the end of the year. I'm sure the coach sees something in his play at the own end or he wouldn't have been out on the PK.

I also watch him fall down and not cover the points. I think he was on PK late (when they were down) because hes fast and can be sprung on the breakaway. He is the cherry picker when they do that too

Re: Merrimack Offseason: ya, so that was fun.........

I was holding out hope for North Andover. ;-)

The article within that article actually said Boston is one of 4 front runners, along wih the 3 teams mentioned below...I haven't been a big time bruins fan since 1988...that could all change in a matter of seconds...I'd be on NHL.com purchasing the jersey tomorrow LOL

Re: Merrimack Offseason: ya, so that was fun.........

What's the word on the non-conference schedule for next year? Dartmouth Tourney with St. Lawrence, Ohio State and Dartmouth for sure. I know they will host Harvard and play at CC and DU in the 2012-13 season. I'm not so sure why all these teams keep their non-conference schedules so sealed. It would create some buzz if they at least announced some of the opponents, even if without confirmed dates.

He was probably a young poster!. I'd put
Da Costa in the 20-25 range, but certainly not top 3

Re: Merrimack Offseason: ya, so that was fun.........

How Chris Drury could not be in the top 3 is beyond me with all he has accomplished at every level, and he did win a Hobey Baker and a NCAA Championship. Brian Gionta would have to be up there, as well.
