Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

In any event, for the ULowell game, I was told that no student bus ride is being sponsored and that any MC students who travel are doing so of their own volition.
I hope they at least phrased it in a more encouraging manner than that.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

The MC students are beginning to really support this team. The BU home game was the largest crowd I have seen in 5 years of work at the Lawler. The crowd was announced at 2,990 and it looked every bit of the part.

However, this team is not a sellout candidate for every home game quite yet. For example, two games after Da Costa scored his five goals...the arena wasn't even close to being filled for the 4:00 game against UCONN...mostly because the Patriots were still on TV when the game started.

In any event, for the ULowell game, I was told that no student bus ride is being sponsored and that any MC students who travel are doing so of their own volition. IMO, it's too bad--as an alumni, I am traveling to go see this team play on the road. I'm not sure the current students understand the struggle from whence this program came--but in time, they will.

The school is still very much a "suitcase school". Yes there are plenty of people who stay on campus but a lot of people go home. Perhaps this has to do with the fact that 80% of the population comes from New England and over 50% (myself included) live within an hour of the school.

I think we need to see a push for more national recognition and more students from a distance in order to grow campus camaraderie. Right now it seems like a lot of students are still arguing over who had the better high school not coming together around Merrimack.

Perhaps a push into the playoffs by the hockey team will help that aspect of the campus. Look at the jump Villanova made when their BBall team won it all in '85.

Just wondering what the predicitions are for this weekend's game against New Hampshire. Will the Warriors extend their winning streak at home? Who's injured and who's back?

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

Hello,

Defenceman Kyle Bigos is someone we're keeping tabs on this year and I recently posted his first entry to the blog/Q&A that he has agreed to do with us this season.

Here's the link: http://thepipelineshow.blogspot.com/2009/11/big-os-man-on-campus.html

Cheers,

Guy,

Kyle has been a great player for Merrimack this season, he carries on the physical presence that the school is known for in Hockey East (you can ask Chris Kreider from BC for confirmation ;) ).

The other teams know when he is on the ice and they are starting to pass the puck away from his side of the ice as a result. Also, his shot is excellent and he has been a nice weapon on the power play, producing huge rebounds or tickling the twine in a screen.

We are all hoping he sticks around to impose his will on Hockey East for a few more years.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

For the UNH game; note that USCHO has the time wrong; it is apparently to be played at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, not 7:00.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

Yes, it's definitely a 4pm start with a skate with Santa and player autographs after the game so bring your skates!

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

Hey Merrimack fans. What can we expect from this game? Are they still having scoreboard problems at the Volpe?

RockTheWhit, expect the unexpected, but word is that all issues with the scoreboards have been fixed for tomorrow's game. The clocks were in good working order for the BU game...so they should be good to go for tomorrow...

Plus, I'm sure you'll be happy to know the old scoreboards will be gone when UNH comes back to town in late January.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

Think we can break this three-game skid? It seems like the defense is regressing to that of years' past.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

unfortunately i didn't have a chance to really check out the game via the rinkrat blog or anything due to the holiday weekend and such, but from my reading it does sound a bit like we're losing that "hunger" at times. We're not clearing out the front of the net, we're not beating other teams to loose pucks, and not sacrificing the body like we had seen earlier in the year. Team needs to get that back or we're in trouble

Well the three game skid got broke, won one game, now had a six-game skid. Too much dependance on a few guys to do it all. Same issue as last year, the top three to six guys running out of gas in the third period because the bench gets shortened. Roll the lines and employ more players on the special teams. Have some faith in these guys and keep the momentum going for a full 60 minutes. No one on this Warrior team is going to win games on their own. Actually, nobody on any hockey team anywhere can win games on their own. Team chemistry and attitude will have to come around pretty quick to stay out of the basement. A long road trip is coming to an end and hopefully a few home games will result in a turnaround.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

A nice win at home tonight. The Warriors worked hard for this one and I think the chemistry is starting to come. Keep working with some of these line combinations and more personnel on the special teams. The rise out of the basement has begun.:)

   I really need to focus on the date more.

Looking forward to a game at Merrimack with a decent amount of MC fans there -- in the past, one UNH player called it a "UNH Home Game at Merrimack." It would be nice for this fan to see Merrimack make a splash in Hockey East.

Just, wait until February, please.

Another critical victory against New Hampshire on home ice. One more rung up the ladder. It will be a very tough battle tonight.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

I expect tonight to be another fast paced close game. The large ice surface could get them in trouble if the don't keep the shifts short. I think the physical game we saw last night will continue.

Dennehy has a tough choice in goal, does he go with Braithwaite who has won the last 2 or play Cannata. I'm guessing Braithwaite gets the start.

Go Warriors, take it again tonight.

It would be nice. Cannata gave UNH fits last year at UNH, I would expect to see him.

Re: Merrimack College Hockey 2009-2010

So, I finally found something positive about Volpe last night... the BEST soft pretzels I've EVER had. For that I will apologize in advance for saying anything bad again ;)

Having said that, kudos to Merrimack last night for playing a great game and picking up a big win and some revenge for their only home loss in November.

Looking forward to tonight's game on the frozen lake!
