Mercyhurst 2017-2018

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

What a win by Mercyhurst. Watched the last two periods and it was the best hockey I have seen them play in a long long time.
Three cool things:
1- Kenned Blair shuts out RMU for the second time this year. Huge poke check in the third to neutralize an RMU scoring chance.
2- It's the time of year when you look at a freshman and don't worry about them being a freshman. Thiessen handling Howard no big deal, on what looked like a dangerous play to begin with.
3- The second period and the D continually springing the forwards on odd person rushes, creating multiple scoring chances. Not to sound ridiculous but it reminded me of Team USA.

ok 4 - going 2 for 4 on the PP and getting a huge win. Way to go Lakers!

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

Congratulations to Mercyhurst on grabbing two critical points from Robert Morris, and moving back into a tie for first place in the CHA!

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

Hmm. So RMU won today and now if they sweep Syracuse next weekend they win the CHA reg season. Ugh. But if Syracuse takes one win next weekend and Mercyhurst sweeps RIT, RMU and Mercyhurst would be tied in points. I think this is what would then play out, but correct me if I’m wrong:

Tie breaker is head to head record: Hurst and RMU are 2-2
Then total conference wins: both would be at 13
Comparison of results against top 2 teams: 2 -2 vs each other
Comparison of results vs top 4 teams: I think Penn State will be fourth place. RMU and Hurst have same record against Penn State and each other. Hurst went 3-1 vs Syracuse (third place team). If RMU splits with Syracuse they’ll be 2-2 vs them and Hurst would win the tie breaker for reg season champ.

Let’s go ‘Cuse! And let’s sweep RIT!

As for today’s loss, just yesterday I was thinking about how we hadn’t heard about Gebhard this year. Looked up her points, they were like 31. Still dangerous. Kid puts up two goals today and Howard puts up one. Tough one. Senior Brooke Hartwick scored both goals for the Lakers.

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

Actually, fourth place is still in play as well, between Lindenwood and Penn State who play each other next weekend. Hurst needs to root for Penn State. I think if Lindenwood finishes fourth, and Syracuse splits with RMU, and Hurst sweeps RIT next weekend, we would end with co champions. Basically chaos in the CHA. Down to the last weekend, that’s fun I guess.

Syracuse and Robert Morris split last time at Robert Morris, so a split this time at Syracuse is very possible. I also don't see RIT taking any points from Mercyhurst next weekend, so I think the Lakers have the upper hand. Penn State has Lindenwood at Penn State, so I hope that's an edge. Tough loss for Mercyhurst today, and you're right - the CHA regular season is ending in a mess, for sure!

Ah, good to know that Syracuse is home next week. I hadn’t looked it up. Yea it would be better for Mercyhurst to control their own destiny, but this scenario where Hurst ends up reg season champ isn’t too far fetched either.

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

Thinking out loud here and trying to consider all the possibilities, however unlikely:

There are four conference points left for the taking. The only scenario not considered is if Syracuse sweeps Robert Morris next weekend, and RIT sweeps Mercyhurst (I'll wait for the laughing to stop before I continue)...............Syracuse and Robert Morris would end up with 27 points apiece and Mercyhurst would finish with 25. I'm too lazy to do the tie breaker stuff that follows.

Next weekend I'm a Mercyhurst fan (never thought I'd say that) and a Syracuse fan. Okay, 1/4 Mercyhurst and 3/4 Syracuse, just so I don't get blacklisted from Pegula Ice Arena.

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

Huge congrats to Emma Nuutinen of Finland, who won a bronze medal last night. In her second Olympics Emma got a goal and an assist, and a more importantly; the bronze medal.

Happy for her success and can’t wait to see her back in Laker jersey.

I was going to say something about them Finnishing off Syracuse in OT, but I heard the groans coming before I could even say it.

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

In advance of the CHA Championship game, wanted to offer congrats to the Lakers who won awards at the banquet the other day:

All Rookie Team: Kennedy Blair, (also named goaltending Champion)
2nd Team All Conference: Maggie Knott, Sophomore, Forward
1st Team All Conference: Vilma Tanskanen, Junior, Forward
Coach of the Year: Coach Sisti

It’s a bit surprising no defensemen were given awards, given the Lakers gave up the fewest goals in league play this year with 24, but it is what it is.

I thought Colontino would win COTY but I know I am too stuck in the “winner gets it” mindset. The case for Sisti is as follows: The team improved from 23 to 29 league points this year, good enough for a close second place. Only team in the league to shut out RMU, did it two times. The team had wins over ranked opponents RMU and Ohio State, a tie against ranked SLU. A split against a tough Bemidji team, when Hurst was without two of their stars.

In Grant’s beginning of the year stats from another thread he indicated Mercyhurst was returning 37 goals this year or 40.22%. Of the 34 programs, only Wisconsin or UMD were returning a lower percentage of goals. So the Lakers had to replace goals, as well as contain the momentum the RMU program was building. They did both to an extent. Through 35 games this year Mercyhurst scored 88 goals and had 69 against, last year (92-85). Their record improved to 17-14-4, after last year’s 15-18-2.

It’s a thing they can’t really be given credit for because of the final non conf record, but Mercyhurst fought hard through a tough first half schedule. The losses piled up against ranked opponents, but the team eventually broke through against Ohio State and hasn’t looked back. Some teams would just break from that first half, and not regroup for a strong second half.

Having watched a handful of games this year, one memory I have is of Brooke Hartwick in OT against Colgate going end to end, creating offense. On a different play, just before the painful OT loss with one second left, the Lakers had the puck in the corner in Colgate’s end and worked it to the front of the net for a great chance. It’s been fun watching this team play to win, even if the desired result hasn’t always came. But watching that game, it made me think, if they can get back to a situation like that, they always have a chance.

So, yeah Sisti (and Goulet and Steadman) for CHA Coach of the Year. Definite case there.

Good luck to the Lakers in the CHA Championship game today! It’s been fun following along and watching the whole team, not just the stars. Can’t wait for Vasko to get her first goal. Her goals keep getting called back or corrected to others. I know it’s not the most important thing, especially not today, but come on universe, reward the hard work!

Congrats to hurst. What a great bunch of games today.

I agree. I know the BC game didn’t go as hoped for TTT, but he is right this is a fun hockey day. Being able to tune in here and there to some games, and fully watch the CHA game, for me that is such a treat. Pretty neat this technology thing.

Re: Mercyhurst 2017-2018

An incredible weekend of hockey by the Lakers, incredibly exciting to watch. Congrats. And some beauty goals to boot.

Yes! So many pretty goals. They are all here in RMU’s site for anyone interested.
