Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

Quiet around these parts... :)

So - any more substance about who'll be on Pearson's staff?

Maybe we should see if the Michigan fans have heard anything about who Red is wooing. I think if people can find his smoke signals, then they're also likely to find Pearson's as far as who may be in the running for Tech. As was previously mentioned, they're likely to have short-listed at least a couple of the same candidates.

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

^^^

Word on the street is that it will be a former Michigan player. A few names are mentioned; Matt Herr (head coach, Kent School in Connecticut), Bill Muckalt (head coach, New Mexico Mustangs-NAHL) and Brian Wiseman (assistant coach, Houston Aeros-AHL) seem to be the most popular candidates.

Food for thought from the U of M rumor mill. These are guys from the early-to-mid 90s that Mel may have had a hand in recruiting and developing, and so he might be in touch with them. That said, they're all ex-Wolverines and I'm sure they'd enjoy a chance to return to Ann Arbor, so it would seem that Red would have the advantage there. So Mel may be going in a different direction.

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

I would think he would find someone who can fill the voids in his own strengths.

I think he kind of hinted during the presser that, first and foremost, he'll probably look for a guy who shares his passion for recruiting. Then, the other factors come into play.

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

Look for Bill Muckalt and possibly Brian Renfrew to join Mel in Houghton.

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

BTW, a former Husky who played a season and a half up there before going to a DIII school is the new head coach at Hopkins High School in MN. Rolf Ulvin, who coached my kid's first squirt team. (Another Edina Hornet coaching)

Interesting...I guess he's used to losing

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

If Renfrew comes, I assume Dieter Kochan won't be back as volunteer goalie coach, and Damon Whitten will somehow be kicked upstairs for his second year.

I'd love to have them both, as well as keep Damon. That's a lot of recruiting firepower.

Speaking of Dieter... the Chicago Wolves were selling items that had been laying around the locker room for the last decade or so, so I picked up his locker nameplate.

Now to just have him sign it. :D I'd prefer him to be off duty when I'd meet him though.

So what do we know about Muckalt besides the stuff you can figure out from HockeyDB - former Wolverine, two-time national champion, and a few seasons in the NHL? His NAHL team was an expansion club, and it seems he's just getting started as a coach.
