Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

So because you're a big ten school, it's a gravy train? Michigan State, Ohio State, Minnesota and WI all missed the NCAA's this year. A little bit of short changing going on in my opinion. What Michigan has accomplished in his time there is amazing and only happens with a tremendous coaching staff.

Also to finish your sentence "You should come to Michigan Tech because we WILL win, and put you in the NHL." It's not much different of a strategy.

I agree, it's no gravy train these days. Big time programs are in a struggle with drawing Canadian talent from the CHL Major Juniors and keeping their homegrown talent in state-then having them stay beyond two seasons. But, it is easier to draw kids when you have brand recognition and a current track record. Taking on a program like Michigan Tech or LSSU- very solid academic and hockey rich schools- is not the same as it was in the past. We had Chris Conner! isn't like saying we had Cammalleri, Komiserek, Cogliano, Johnson etc. etc. year after year.

Good luck to Mel and to MTU.

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

Perhaps 'gravy train' was the wrong slang to use, but regardless, my point was that Mel will have to do significantly more work to bring good players to Tech. I don't think anyone can argue otherwise. For starters, the A2 Ice Cube and NTDP aren't going to be right down the road anymore. Next, recruiting any good players from lower Michigan or SW Ontario is going to be harder.

I trust that he can build something at Tech, just expect that it will take a few years to begin seeing the results of his efforts.

but both Minnesota and Wisconsin put players directly into the NHL after 1 or 2 years, and they got to play in the Stanley cup playoffs instead. some kids will think that is more important than a degree from MTU.

Yes, I do agree it will be much harder.

thus you're further solidifying my point that it's no gravy train; there are challenges for a big 10 school even when you are getting the top recruits; which further illustrates how impressive Michigan's run has been. And to get their associate head coach is a huge pickup for Tech and should not be shortchanged.

Now that circus has gone to Marquette where it belongs MTU can announce the new coach Tuesday at 11:00.

Hope he can convince Ben Johnson (Mr Hockey) to come to MTU it is not to late yet.

Although geographically more accessible, Michigan doesn't have any more direct access with candidates than any other school and the dispersion of NDTP players is proof that they do not just show up and players commit to the Wolverines. If U-M's program stunk, they wouldn't get a sniff even if the NDTP played at Yost.

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

Last week the rumor down here was that Ben was committing to Michigan no matter who the coach is at Tech. And when he does Levi will change his commitment to Michigan as well (I think that part was/is 99.9% wishful thinking on the part of the downstate Errkilas).

Now the same people are just as sure Ben is 100% going to the Spitfires. Don't ya just love all the third hand rumors. :)

Checking the Spitfire web site yesterday, I could not find where he was even drafted by them, not that that matters.

Re: Mel Pearson-Michigan Tech's new Coach

Ben could really use a year or two at USHL
Amen to that.

On a different subject I wonder who is the top notch defenseman that DU says they are going to sign in a week. Still playing apparently, or maybe a ntdp player.
