May 1 is decision deadline for Munn Arena

Re: May 1 is decision deadline for Munn Arena

We should bring back the hanging green scoreboard.

Anyways, I think I am leaning towards renovation as well. I like the layout of Munn with the great sightlines open concourse and bowl shape. I think Munn is really unique with these things.

As for the atmosphere, Munn get really get going and it happens sometimes but that is up to the fans. I remember the place rocking pretty hard back in the 90's as a child and my parents say that was tame compared to the 80's.

I just don't see any need to increase seating capacity.

Re: May 1 is decision deadline for Munn Arena

I'm for building a new rink. I love Munn, but I think it's time to start trying to keep up with the arms race. Build an arena with 7,000 seats, maybe 7,500 with the ability to expand to 9,000 (although isn't Munn built to expand to 8,000?).

The problem with building a new arena comes with location. If you build it on Munn Field, intramurals have nowhere to go if the plan to move volleyball and wrestling to Munn Arena goes through. There might be enough room for IM if they tear down Jenison and remove the parking lots. The easy solution would be to build it at the old police station across from Breslin, but apparently that is an historic site and can't be torn down. Another thing to think about is that Munn Field is used for football parking. Building the arena there takes away one of the biggest lots on campus, although I guess they could try to relocate that lot to Jenison also.

Re: May 1 is decision deadline for Munn Arena

I am a Michigan State alum (graduated in 2010) and I really don't think a new arena is going to fix the atmosphere problem at Munn. In all of the games I went to as a student (whether I sat in the student section or elsewhere) I was never impressed by the atmosphere. Amongst students hockey is pretty under-appreciated. I remember in 2006-2007 when MSU was doing awesome in hockey there was hardly ever anything in the State News (the student newspaper) about it, all the focus was on how much our football team stunk, any hockey coverage read like an afterthought. Increasing capacity by too much is just going to highlight this deficit. I'm all for upgrades but that isn't going to change the sometimes lackluster atmosphere. The university needs to do more to get students and the public exited.

As you said, you graduated in 2010. Trust me, you didn't see what student passion was like ... as late as the late 90's, as a student I was happy to get standing room PARTIAL season student tickets. I would have to guestimate the excitement began draining from the building in about 2004, when those league tournament titles, league championships and NCAA runs began to dry up. Yes, football is looking consistently top-notch, but there is a base for hockey at MSU. It just needs a spark.

Tech is completely replacing their 70's era refrigeration system at a cost of approximately $2 million this offseason.

Maine did the Alfond last summer and it seems to be fine after a couple of minor problems at first.

Re: May 1 is decision deadline for Munn Arena

Today is the day. Will Munn survive or will we see something new?

All I can say is I'm confident that at this time the University knows what it will do. I fully expect we'll hear something official tomorrow or Thursday.

Re: May 1 is decision deadline for Munn Arena

As the late great D. Adams said ...

I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they go by.

I believe I'm hearing a doppler whoosh-Ь even as we speak.

Re: May 1 is decision deadline for Munn Arena

I trust the guy who told me the answer will be a complete seating makeover, adjoining office complex and new refrigeration.

Update:
Pay-wall closing this article in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... . Hollis between the lines saying "I'm thinking someone can come through in 2 weeks". Any further delay and the new thing won't be on time for the '13-'14 season.

But with TA fully amped for these renovations, it looks like Munn is kept for hockey, but will look much different in 2 years.

Again, I'm happy with this, but I'm not happy with the price tag. Still, though, $20 million will do a lot of good. Hopefully this is just the first phase of a greater plan.

I'll consider reevaluating this sentiment once I see the conceptual art.
