MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

IMO, because the new league is not as good compared to the ECAC-E and he wanted to goto a better league.

I don't know where he went, but if I remember correctly, MASCAC would not have an AQ before he graduates. Therefore, he might have wanted a chance to go to the NCAA's at least once in his career.

Fox is playing for Oswego this season. I've guess he almost ended up at Plattsburgh.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

When they (UMD) think they are going to be good they will schedule some tougher games, when they are not sure they will schedule weak teams. I like the 600 win philosophy!! That is the difference between UMD and Curry!! Curry has been playing one of the toughest NC schedules in the nation for the last 7 years, and probably the toughest of any of the Eastern schools. Look at who they have this year: Manhattanville, Tufts (??), Hobart, Norwich, Potsdam or NEC, Geneseo, Utica, Babson, Bowdoin. Curry gets 9 NC games and they schedule the toughest they can get!! And next year they are already going to Plattsburgh for the Cardinal Classic.

This year, UMD has 4 more conference games than Curry, giving Curry much more opportunity to schedule NC games than UMD.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Looks like Fitchburg and Salem State will be vidcasting their games over the internet this year via MASCAC-TV.

Games are free to watch.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Looks like MASCAC-TV has 12 hockey games already on their schedule up until Jan 7th. I'm sure they'll add a bunch more after Jan 7th as well. My guess is they'll do the league playoffs also. This is great visibility for this league.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

In order to help us decide on Pool B, we need this table updated. Write your USCHO representative and ask, no, DEMAND, that the interconference records table be updated to reflect the MASCAC and Northeast 10!!!

Fight for the underrepresented! We demand our rights!

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Night 2 of MASCAC play saw trap games. Winners of game #1 were hard pressed to repeat their success in night two.

In a repeat of Tuesday, Salem State spotted Plymouth St a 2-0 lead (both on PP's) and then roared back to win 5-2 (ENG).

Fitchburg State needed overtime to beat Framingham St, and Worcester state played a no counter against Franklin Pierce and won easily.

In a bit of a surprise, UMass-Dartmouth and Westfield State skated to a 2-2 tie.

It was a good night for DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) High School. Maryland's most successful HS hockey progam saw goals from alumnae Chris Chambers ('04) (Plymouth) and Josh Williams ('05) (Framingham) while James LaCour (2 state titles before moving up to MA - would have been '04) (Salem) picked up his 2nd win of the season.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Week 1 of MASCAC play is now in the books. 3 games in 5 nights may have led to some sloppy play last night.

Congratulations to the Framingham State Rams. It's been almost 2 years (11/4/2007) since they last won, but last night broke the schneid with a nice 5-3 victory over Worcester State after forcing OT against Fitchburg on Thursday. The Rams may not be the easy 2 points that the pre season polls predicted.

What's up with UMass-Dartmouth?? 0-2-1 after one week of play. This was a team that received votes in the preseason USCHO poll. Is this a one-off or a trend?

Fitchburg State will ride Bobby Vorse as far as he can take them. Salem State dominated last night, but Vorse kept them in the game. They have a good 1st line and if they're firing on all cylinders, will give every team fits.

Salem State - the only team to escape week one with an unblemished record. When leading scorer Justin Fox departed for snowier climates, we wondered who would pick up the scoring slack. Turns out it is scoring by committtee. Nobody has more than 3 points, but a lot of players have points. Team has depth that will help them out this season as bumps and bruises take their toll.

Plymouth State - 2-1 for the week and comes off a shutout win over UMD. Will they stay where they are for the long haul? If so, they need to stop the gimmic plays. C'mon boys, those things are reserved for Mighty Duck movies.

Have not seen the W's - Westfield State and Worcester St. Westfield St has a win against Framingham and a tie against UMD. Congratulations to local product T.J. Cuneo who picked up his first collegiate win over Franklin Pierce on Thursday for the Lancers only 2 points of the week.

Key Out of Conference games this week for the MASCAC to enhance their PWC standing. UMD has a critical game against Babson. A loss here pretty much dooms any hope the Corsairs would have for an NCAA bid. Salem State travels out to Duluth to take on St. Scholastica and St. Norbert. While these are out of region games, a win out there would give SSC nice brownie points with the committee.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Nice summary of opening week. Seems MASCAC has 5 decent teams capable of getting a “W” any given night (Salem St, UMD, Fitchburg St, Westfield St, Plymouth St). Even the 2 others (Worc St, Fram St) seem to have stronger rosters this year. Should be interesting first-year league to watch especially their playoffs.

Respect-wise and for NCAA’s, it all comes down to how MASCAC performs in their non-league games. Upcoming Babson, St Scholastica & St Norbert matchups are huge, more than just for brownie points.

Respect-wise, yes. But in terms of the NCAAs, they couldn't care less about CSS or SNC games... unless you go to secondary criteria, games against Western Teams are meaningless.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

The only way, IMO, the MASCAC gets a bid is the regular season champion has to win the tournament AND the MASCAC has to wail on the OOC.

So far, the MASCAC has only played the ECAC-NE. The record so far is an OK 3-1-2. Now comes two key games against the ECAC-E. Tuesday Framingham takes on UMass-Boston and Babson visits UMass-Dartmouth. At worst, the MASCAC must come out of these two games with a split.

As CRtB said, the Salem State games out west to are out of region and are not a primary selection factor. Since I see the tournament being a 7/4 split, these games will only help Salem St when the NCAA releases the regional rankings in January and Salem is lucky enoough to be ranked.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Fitchburg's goalie is Bobby Vorse, not Ryan. Can you clarify what you mean by gimic plays from Plymouth? Are they trying some crazy stuff? I'm picturing the flying V or the knuckle puck.

Off a D-Zone faceoff a forward (usually Chambers) deliberately drops a perfectly good stick and races to the bench to get a new one. One he gets it, he keeps going and circles behind the opponent D at the far blue line looking for the home run pass.

Oh please tell me it worked. That is too funny, maybe another team will take some notes from this and suit up a figure skater to distract their opponents.

This league is all bout saving HOCKEY for the state schools.

I actually think its a good IDEA for the long term until the economy
gets straightened out...

There are enough quality players around with all the Junior teams around the area...

The State is hurting and people have to understand..

Bingo - you hit the nail on the head. There are no overnight trips in the MASCAC, so teams save on the hotel bills. I think the longest bus ride is 3, maybe 4 hours (Plymouth St - Westfield). Most are within a hour (except in rush hour!).

Is it a good league? I think it's better than the NE, but not quite up to the E or NESCAC. Also, I think it's a competitive league. Though Salem is 3-0, they have not blown anyone out. Even Framingham seems to have gotten off the doormat stand - great!

If the league shows promise, will the club teams at MCLA and Bridgewater think about elevating (or re-elevating) their programs to NCAA levels? That would be nice, but I am not holding my breath.

Re: MASCAC Season 1 - Pool B or not to Pool B, we'll C.

Well it's off to the Twin Harbors for your intrepid correspondent this weekend. I'll give reports that will supplement the wise and learned reporting of Matthew Webb and give a MASCAC spin to the equation. Be sure to follow the games at www.csssaints.com for live audio and video coverage of all four games.

I'm predicting a 7/4 East/West allocation for the NCAA tournament. If so, these games will have little, if any, meaning for Salem St. or the MASCAC when it comes to the Pool B or C selections. But a win or two would do wonders for Salem St. and MASCAC with the pollsters seeing how they are playing two top 10 schools from perhaps the best D-III conference in the country.

This is Salem State's first trip outside the Eastern Time Zone since December, 1999 when they participated in the Raddison Inn Hockey Classic at the US Air Force Academy. There the Vikings lost to the host Falcons 6-2 before beating UMass-Dartmouth in the consolation game 5-2.

Last year, the Vikings were 2-0 against NCAA teams, beating both Amherst (1-0) and Babson (@3-1). In NUProf's computer poll, Salem St. has beaten both Fitchburg St (4-3 OT) and UMass-Dartmouth (3-2). The pedigree is there, now can they make it stick???? The pick-'ems and blog posts say no, with everyone is predicting CSS and STN to both go 2-0. History, however, could be on Salem State's side. In 1976, Vikings went 2-0 on Mars.

To all of you on the road or in the air this weekend - travel safe. Have a wonderful, safe, and Happy Thanksgiving. See you tomorrow from Mars!
