Marian/Wis. Stout on Oct. 26

Anyone know how Marian and Wisconsin-Stout are skirting the Nov. 1 rule and playing what looks like to be a regular season game on Oct. 26 this year to open the season?

Both schools have it on their schedules.

Anyone got an idea?

Re: Marian/Wis. Stout on Oct. 26

11/1 falls on a Friday, 10/26 is the last Saturday in October, six days before the season is supposed to start. They then have a game on 11/1 against Lake Forest. It's an interesting situation to say the least.

"A member institution shall not play its first contest (game, exhibition or scrimmage)
against outside competition in ice hockey before November 1. When November 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, a
member institution may play its first contest on the Friday immediately preceding November 1. (Revised: 1/10/95
effective 8/1/95, 1/17/09 effective 8/1/09, 4/17/12 effective 8/1/12, 1/19/13 effective 8/1/13)"

The 1st is a Friday and not a Saturday. So this game is illegal per the NCAA rules.

For games scheduled after 8/1/13 ;)

And besides, they are competing indoors :p

According to my source, the game was scheduled prior to the rule being put in place and it was grandfathered in and approved by the league and the NCAA.

Seems pretty fishy to me and could open up a whirlwind of controversy. Couldn't everyone claim they had a game scheduled prior to this?

My guess is they could show contractual booking made prior to the ruling - and that the NCAA would have grandfathered in everyone with an audit trail.

The NC$$ allowed a football player to play a Bowl game when he had been suspended for financial improprieties.
And you are worried about this ?

The NCAA also banned bagels and cream cheese for players a few years back, so it was probably a fair concern :).

That said, as I'm the source referenced earlier in the thread...I can confirm the info is correct and the game will proceed as scheduled.
