Major earthquake in Haiti

Re: Major earthquake in Haiti

Thanks, AMC!

I could have posted Limbaugh's rant about how we shouldn't help Haiti.

All I did was post Robertson's comments and point out that he is a.) one of Christianity's leading figures and b.) one of the most evil men in the world. If anyone would like to refute either statement, I'm all ears.

The only people who consider Pat to be a Christian leader are non-Christians. I was at my church yesterday and there was a group standing around ****ed off about his comments... most of them didn't even realize Pat was still alive (until his comments hit the news that is), let alone that he still had a TV show.

You seem to be forgetting all the christians who support his cable network and that horrific 700 club show that's syndicated on several other channels. He's not exactly small time in America.

Re: Major earthquake in Haiti

That's so slimy, using a major disaster to slam something you don't like. Especially Catholicism and all its denominations. I was in New Orleans after Katrina. I saw many, many Baptist, Methodist, and/or Catholic aid trucks show up and deliver much-needed supplies.

The atheists and agnosts delivered? Nothing.

People who have a problem with organized religion should shut their traps in times of major disasters. It's not like they do even 1% of the good that organized religion does in these times.

Congratulations. The single most ignorant post in Forum history. You should be proud.

Robertson's a crazy old moron; as somebody said below, nobody with an ounce of genuine spirituality pays any attention to him.

The emphasis should be on the victims of the tragedy, not some far right loon.

That's representative of a small fraction of fundamentalists. The bulk of the Christian community, especially us evangelicals, ignore him.

33% of Americans have a favorable impression of him. 76% of American adults say they are some flavor of Christian. Making the I-don't-think-unwarranted assumption that the vast majority of Robertson's supporters identify themselves as Christians, that means roughly 43% of people identifying themselves as Christian have a favorable impression of Robertson.

Whatever -- even if they're lunatics if they donate may Shiva and the Corn Goddess bless them.

Re: Major earthquake in Haiti

THANK YOU!

100k people might be dead and this is what you hold a ****ing contest over. Classy!
Meh, what's the point of sitting around and going "oh that's so awful." "I feel bad for these people." Paying lip service to a catastrophe does what exactly? It spreads what's happening, but so does pointing out scumbags like Robertson.

Re: Major earthquake in Haiti

If you are looking to help- the obvious is the Red Cross- who have already said that they have run out of materials.

Another- Doctors Without Borders- I'm sure you have heard of them. They have thier mobile hospitals already on site.

There was another doctor group I heard about this morning- listening to NPR's report, the reporter flew down with a group of doctors who were helping people within min of landing in Port au Prince.

What I'm more "nervous" about is the outlying areas- so far all of the reports have been from Port au Prince, since the reporters can't really get out of there. I bet there's a lot of distruction for miles outside of what's being currently reported... :(

If Haiti is like the other islands I've visited, concrete block is the most common construction, and they don't seem to use much mortar... ouch.

The US is in with both feet- but I'm sure the medical organizations who are there providing relief can use $$ help to buy supplies.

I have a car buddy who's haitian. Hopefully, his friends and family who still live there are ok....

Just stunning.

the red cross is the best charity to donate to. as far as i know, they have the lowest overhead costs of any charity and that means the most amount of each dollar contributed (over 90%) goes to actually helping victims.

They also have their own distribution networks, which means they don't rely on the local government. In countries like Haiti, that's about the only way to know your money is really getting to the site.

If there's a "silver lining" (and admittedly that's hard to imagine) it's that Haiti was already so effed there must be NGOs operating throughout the country; more experienced people to help the aid effort (assuming they're not buried under the same buildings).

We are going on a cruise in July to the Western Carribbean for our honeymoon, one of the stops is Labade. Wonder how that will turn out. :(
