Maine @ Union: FRI 10/10

Re: Maine @ Union: FRI 10/10

This dude is way too excited for Maine pulling within 2 of a nonscholarship team in the third period.

Remind me which teams made the NCAA last year: (nonscholarship) Princeton ... (nonscholarship) Yale ... (nonscholarship) Cornell ... (scholarship) Maine ...

That's not a fair comparison, those Ivies don't have coaches who were certified as "retarded" by the National Board of Mental Health Experts.

Re: Maine @ Union: FRI 10/10

Are you referring to Timmay?

Yes. Ivies are one thing. D-3 schools that voted against themselves being allowed to give scholarships are another.

The University of Maine should close up shop on the hockey program if they can't beat glorified D-3 schools. I have taken ****s that would run this program better than Whitehead.

Ok. Just wanted to make sure you weren't referring to The One that Got Away, Mr. Nathan Leaman.

Please don't singlehandedly sour my opinion of Maine hockey fans, whom I consider to be the best in Hockey East. Stop acting so .. UNH. :o

I am personally rooting for Maine's fans to disappear. The only way the athletic department will get the enema it needs is for the hockey team to stop drawing.

I'm talking like averaging 1500/game this year.

Likewise, we won't let this one thread spoil our impression of your writing. :p

Seriously...where did the defensiveness come from? Nobody's taking anything away from Union. Most of us will admit that they have a better hockey team right now.

We're upset at our own program. And Union has almost nothing to do with it. If it isn't obvious that the anger runs a lot deeper than these 2 games, I dunno how to help ya. :)

Oh believe me, I know the Whitehead hatred is running deep these days among UMOers. I just take umbrage on behalf of the league (as much as Union) for potshots against supposedly inferior "non-scholarship" and "glorified D-III" programs. I'm not looking to cause a ruckus; just making a point.

I can't speak for anyone else, but when I brought up the scholarship issue in this thread, it was to eliminate an excuse for Whitehead apologists.

For a lot of players, I'm sure it is harder to get them to Orono than to get them to Grand Forks, Boston, or Ann Arbor. But whoever is doing recruiting for Union probably doesn't want to hear whining about the hardships of recruiting for Maine.

That's all I meant.

Fair enough. If that's the case, consider my comments retracted and my face slightly red. :o

Knowing us, I'm sure we probably got carried away.

But I think it's more frustration than animosity toward the ECAC. Heck, I'm a liberal arts guy. I'm happy to see programs like Union do well. And it's cool to see Colorado College competing with the elite. But that doesn't make me any less frustrated with being a Maine fan. Something needs to change in Orono.

No doubt, Maine has taken a sharp turn turf-ward in the last couple years under Whitehead, and it's a sorry state that Blue fans simply aren't accustomed to. I feel you. My concern, personal frustrations aside, is that the ECAC is actually fielding some pretty competitive teams these days, but Hockey East/CCHA/WCHA fans -- by and large -- refuse to recognize it.

I really appreciate Maine Hockey. It's a great venue, a great experience, and it's not UNH. Best of luck this year and down the road ...
