Maine - the Golfing Season

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Sorry Bob, the only place I've ever seen 3 guys skating around with C's rather than one, maybe 2, and a few A's, is in high school.

We don't know that all three of these guys will wear C's but if they do yes I think its lame. Will it hurt them on the ice? Probably not. But it is lame. Pick a captain. Everyone else does.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Bears absolutely right, having 3 C's is unheard of. Its a high school move. Pick one (Cornell??) and give the other 2 A's.

That's certainly what it was in '07. Michel Leveille was the captain, period. Soares and Lundin wore A's.

Our captains my freshman year were Barkley, Pellerin and Robitaille, All three wore C's.

You understand that the players voted for these captains, right? It wasn't Tim throwing darts at a board and deciding that these were the guys and he'd have three captains.

I can't believe people are actually complaining about this. Amazing.

I can't believe you can't just admit that its unusual. It's the freaking offseason. What else is going on that you'd care to discuss?

It's not so much a complaint, from me, as it is an observation that its extremely unusual and an opinion that it is lame.

Dustin Penner's game-winning goal against the Canucks last night?

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

According to the BDN it was players and the staff, so maybe it was Tim throwing darts at a board? or maybe the players votes carry more weight than the staffs?

Every coach says " let's vote" and then makes his decision, and if the vote goes the way he thinks , good if not, good , it's his team and his call...... To think that players split their votes so evenly, is a little naive. Joey got a C as a motivational tool and a bit of a runner up prize for not getting a big pro offer, Mark will be a 5th year Sr,brings stability and has risen from no ice to a pretty fair player who has a chance to play at a higher level, and Mike seems to be the more natural "leader"....even with less natural or size than the other 2. So Tim Ghandi does what he always does, waffles on a decision.....I don't care who has the C, but IMHO, one C is better than 3.....All 3 are great kids, and in 15 years will be able to say"yes I captained Maine....." and no one can take that away....

I can't believe you still claim to have been on the team.

do you ever tell about why you were not the manager during your junior and senior years at Maine?

kinda sucks when anotherknowitall (Priceless) tells you that your opinion is not valid.
how long till he got to 70th prestige in COD, anyway?

Hey would never limit your problems to just one! However loved the onion piece!

GOOD... I did not want to NEED to post a complete list.

if you liked that onion piece, see if you can pull up the one about the voyeur who is concerned about his neighbors' marital difficulties.... one of the funniest things I have ever read.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

(Anybody watching how our former Bears are doing in the NHL lately..?)

Jimmy was great tonight (OK, so had a little help from the posts) and Dustin created the opportunity for the nail-in-the-coffin goal with hard work and a great pass.

I'm not surprised to see Howard as the #1 goalie for the best franchise in pro hockey. He landed in a good spot, despite having to wait a while to play in The Bigs, and he's always shown the requisite talent to get there.

Penner, on the other hand, I never expected to have more than a cup of coffee in the NHL... He shocked me with his big numbers a couple of years back, but that year is looking more and more like a fluke right now. I'm glad that he got his money, but I'm back to questioning his skating and his desire again.

(Too bad Tampa Bay is playing golf, too. I would rank Teddy and Brett right behind Jimmy as the best Bears in the NHL.)

Where's the motivation when you're guaranteed $25MM? It doesn't get talked about a lot but I think that is what is behind a lot of busts in every sport. Athletes work so hard and once they know they're set for life its hard to have that some motivation/determination. There are some who only care about winning but I think its fewer than a lot of people realize.

Two guys who spent maybe a year and a half at Maine -- between them.

I wish 'em well, but I'm not going to follow more than one NHL team not named the Bruins. With Howard and Nyquist, the Wings pretty much have that locked down. :)

He never really impressed me while at Maine, and I was astounded by the offer he got at the next level. I don't fault him a bit for taking it, but Slather was right at the time for calling it insane.

As far as the one-and-done guys from Maine, I don't hold it against them at all. The system is set-up to screw them if they don't come when called.

I was a fan of every team PK played for, and I'll follow Teddy et al as long as they play in that league. There is so much player-movement in the NHL that it's pretty much just rooting for the sweater, otherwise.

(One exception: I actually knew both Torts back in the day, and I rooted for John big-time while he was in Tampa... But in NY? No friggin way!)

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

For me, it isn't a matter of holding something against the one (or 0.75) and done guys.

It's more a question of: "Do I associate Maine hockey with this person?"

Maybe. If that person was part of a program-defining moment. Otherwise . . . meh. I hope they do well, but mostly so they might help as recruiting fodder. I just don't have any real memories invested with Purcell, and definitely none with Clark.

Others' mileage may differ.

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

Didn't Clark leave when sanctions were going to be imposed?

Re: Maine - the Golfing Season

(PK did, too. Can't blame either one of them.)

Back to the present...

I was pleasantly surprised to see Goose on the roster today. Good for him. He didn't get a lot of ice time, but he really looked like he fit right in when he was out there. I'm predicting that he'll get more shifts in the crucial Game 4. Rinne is a brick wall, and the Wings are going to need to play every sniper they have.
