Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Cronin has a record at NU for six years that's worse than TIMMAY's last six. That's the guy you want as your new head coach, the guy to rebuild the program into a winner and put butts in the seats? Really inspiring.

Correct me if I'm wrong. but he didn't exactly set the world on fire during his stint as interim HC up in Orono during Walshy's *vacation* either.

Not exactly.

The committee is named tomorrow. Who are you hoping to see?

Nope. And during the second half of Walshy's suspension, the first half of the '96-97 season, he was barely over .500, and then Walshy came back after the new year, and was 15-3 with the same group of players.

He was given a ton of credit at the time...

I also know Walsh wanted him gone and was one of the main reasons whitehead came

He also rubbed fans the wrong way when he complained that people didn't come out to watch "his team" - never mind that there was a blizzard raging outside that night and the students were on break.

You mean, five years later? So Shawn(see, I can spell his name correctly, and I'm not even his friend, as you claim to have been)wants Cronin gone so five years later he can get around to calling in TIMMAY?

Given credit? By whom? For what, not cutting and running? Hell, he got a head coaching job, why would he run away from that?

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Wanted to post this yesterday during the debate about whether the search was merely a ruse and that the hiring of Corkum was simply a fait accompli. With that said, supposing that he is in fact the next head coach, I think there are certain things that need to happen to back up the words contained in his post. I believe that Corkum can be successful at Maine but to do so, he needs to find a way to separate himself from Whitehead's legacy.

Because of the amount of time he has spent as an assistant under Whitehead, I think he needs to go out a assemble a new staff. Personally I do not think Kerluke has the recruiting chops to bring in the talent needed to put Maine in position to compete with the upper tier teams in DI. A proven assistant capable of narrowing the recruiting gulf that has developed over the last few years is of the utmost importance. The Skype goalie coach needs to go. They need someone that can be on site working with the 'tenders. Despite Marty's rise this year, the goaltending has been very inconsistent for the last seven seasons. Losing both of these guys will go along way to supporting his "things will be different" mantra.

From there, he needs to engage the fans and boosters. Reach out to folks that were members of FOMH (whether they are currently active or not), and rebuild that relationship which has been so important to the program in years past. Engage the entire state. Holding a couple of skate with the team events around the Portland game does not accomplish much. Reach out to WABI to ensure that all games that can be shown on TV, will be (I think some are not allowed because of H2H with Hockey East TV Contracts, but for those that can, they should be on TV).

And most importantly, show some fire. This shouldn't be a problem for Corks, but for god's sake, be demonstrative. Show fans that you are incensed when you disagree with a call. When the team doesn't put forth the effort necessary, say so. Hold players accountable. Expect their best effort every night. Reward those that give it and for those that don't quite grasp the concept, get the message across by showing them what the game looks like from the bleachers. Expect them to be the hardest working, grittiest team on the ice. I coach HS Hockey in Maine and tell my kids that the only way that they can exceed expectations is to give complete and total effort. It is the one thing everyone, regardless of skill sets or where they sit on the depth chart, can do. Be tenacious.

Practice like you play. Full speed. You can rest on Thursday's (lighter game plan oriented practice) before the weekend grind.

Take responsibility. Don't make excuses. Demand of yourself what you demand of your players.

I think he can pull it off, the question is, will he?

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

I can't bring myself to think about what Corkum could/should do. Not because I'm down on the guy -- though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't bothered by his association with Maine for the last several years.

Call me naive, but I'm still interested in seeing some kind of search play out. I want to know what the options are. If there's a legit search, and Corkum's the guy, I'll be *more* than happy to kick around ideas. I might even find my way back to Orono now and again (still have family in ME). Heck, I might be the only Hoosier to contribute to FOMH.

But if the search really does end up being a charade, there's only one thing Corkum can do to get my attention. Win. That's the only thing that will wash away the bad taste of a compromised search, when a true search is all I've been waiting for, for years.

don't get me wrong, i want a true search to be done as well... i just think if it ends up being him, regardless of circumstances surrounding his hiring, that there are many things he will need to do to accomplish the ultimate goal of winning...

I'm guessing that Steve has had the same girlfriend since he was 8 years old...(You never ditch the current one without having already negotiated a deal with the next one, FCS!)

At this point, I want Corkum. He's a bit tainted by association, yes, but I think he'll either win or die trying.

I have my opinions but not sharing them with you all hacks. :D Lets do the search thing, but get it done soon and get on with it. The longer this drags the chittier it smells.

I guess this search and destroy mission is not my favorite way to pick a coach. I mean there are only so many qualified people out there and then probably a couple uknown shooting stars. Of those, maybe only half want to coach at Orono even with the best fans in the country (except for maybe UND). Of those half you already know who you really want anyway, so why not have this all figured out before you dump your old coach so there is minimial confusion. Above all else you must keep the health and welfare of THE PROGRAM in mind. Perception is everything. Walshy and White certainly understood this. These backwood Mainuhs dont seem to grasp this concept.

Search committee formed for new UMaine ice hockey coach

Orono, Maine — University of Maine Director of Athletics Steve Abbott has announced formation of a seven-member search committee to help identify the new head coach of the UMaine men's ice hockey team.

The search committee will begin work immediately and seek to provide the director of athletics with the names of recommended candidates within the next two months, to be forwarded for a final decision by UMaine President Paul Ferguson.

Robert Corkum was named interim head coach of UMaine men's ice hockey on April 10, replacing Tim Whitehead, who was released from his contract April 9. Corkum, a UMaine alumnus who played on the UMaine hockey team (1985-89) and then 12 years in the NHL, has been an associate head coach with the university's men's ice hockey program since 2008.

“Our aspiration with this coaching search will be to find that individual who can best build upon the significant successes of both Shawn Walsh and Tim Whitehead, and rekindle the collective spirit, energy and support of the entire Black Bear Hockey Nation,” says UMaine President Paul Ferguson.

Dr. George Jacobson, professor emeritus of biology, ecology and climate change, and the university's former NCAA faculty athletic representative, will chair the search committee. Jacobson joined the UMaine faculty in 1979 and serves as the Maine State Climatologist. In addition to his years of research and service to the state, which included his role as a member of the “Faculty Five,” advancing research funding in the State of Maine, Jacobson has played an integral role in UMaine athletics. He has served on numerous search committees for coaches and athletic directors, athletic advisory committees and America East Conference committees.

“Through his participation in numerous head coach searches, and with experience as the NCAA faculty representative, George understands the necessary balance needed in athletics related to competition and student academic success,” says Abbott.

Joining Jacobson on the search committee will be:

Cherie Damon, president and long-time member of Friends of Maine Hockey, recipient of the 2011 Friends of Maine Hockey Volunteer of the Year Award and parent of a former player.

Dr. Nic Erhardt, UMaine assistant professor of management in the Maine Business School, faculty liaison to the men's hockey team, and member of the Athletic Advisory Board. Erhardt played semi-professional hockey in Sweden.

Peter Metcalf, UMaine alumnus (Business, '02), Portland business leader in financial advising and former professional hockey player. Metcalf was a defenseman when the Black Bears went to the 1999 National Championship and a captain of the 2002 team that was national runner-up.

Dr. Richard Powell, UMaine associate professor of political science, and director of the Peter Madigan í81 Congressional Internship Program and the Kenneth Palmer Maine State Legislative Internship Program. Powell has been involved in hockey as a player, coach and administrator for more than 40 years in Michigan and Maine.

Jon Sorenson, UMaine alumnus (Economics, '86), Massachusetts business leader in the energy industry, member of Business and Engineering Advisory Boards, co-chair of Black Bears of Boston, founder of the Boston Executive Club of the University of Maine, and a strong UMaine hockey supporter.

Janine Tremble, UMaine alumna (Merchandising, '86), marketing specialist with Maine Savings and president elect of the Black Bear Board of Advisors.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Good to see Metcalf on the committee. A bright spot. Now that we have the committee they can go spend a bunch of money flying guys in, wasting a bunch of time, then in two weeks name Bob as head coach. I'll bet a big ol' pizza on that.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Plus the Ohio St job is now open too. I bet they pay just a wee bit more then Maine does.
