Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

You really think UMaine could afford Gwoz anyway? With tOSU opening up UMaine better gets its act together and quickly, guess what, we're doomed :)

not really. but we had a better shot if we were the only offer he had...

its more that Jimmy and Gwoz were not even options because of how badly managed the whole process is.

Chit, by the time we get off our can there could be a dozen other firings and hirings taking place. :(

Let's just bring Whitehead back. We're paying him anyway and it will save misadministration the discomfort of actually making a decision.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

But Ohio State is a private school, and they're able to do things differently.

oh, wait . . .
Comparing the athletic dept of tOSU to Maine is kind of a joke, isn't it? If they want they could pay Gwoz 1/2 million a year and not even blink an eye. Maine couldn't pay him half of that

No doubt. I'm just having some fun w/ the few remaining folks who are defending the administration (like Pete Warner's column about not rushing things). I'm also taking a shot at Abbott's claim not to have spoken with prospective hires (which may be more B.S. for all I know). I'm willing to be good money that OSU made contact w/ Gwozdecky before letting Osiecki go.

There's no way Maine can compete with Ohio State or Denver, if money is a major concern (and when isn't it?) . . . and that's EXACTLY why Abbott can't afford to have this "we're not rushing things" attitude. The only way Maine beats out DU or OSU for a coach is by jumping in front of them and getting an offer out. By not even trying to do that, Abbott is basically saying, "Look, folks, we're at the bottom of the totem pole here. We're not going to waste time talking to anyone who might be a candidate somewhere else. We're going to let the rest of college hockey sort out, and then we'll see what's left."

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

What will happen most likely is they will just think something up and say we will go with Corkum as a Interim for the Season(2013-14)...not likely I might add,but you NEVER know with the "U" and the "Hobby A.D." A odd way to go about Business @ UMaine 101.

So what if Corkum puts in for the Ohio State job, and maybe gets hired?

UMaine hockey search committee to be named Tuesday; Montgomery named Denver coach'

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine will announce on Tuesday the members of the search committee that will help select the new men’s ice hockey coach.

Maine athletic director Steve Abbott said he hasn’t given members of the committee a specific deadline, “but I let them know I’d like to have a candidate as soon as possible.”

Former University of Maine captain Jim Montgomery, the school’s all-time leading scorer who helped lead the 1992-93 team to the school’s first NCAA championship, won’t be a candidate because he was officially named the new head coach at the University of Denver on Monday.

The committee will be seeking a replacement for 12-year head coach Tim Whitehead, who was fired a week ago with one year remaining on his contract.

The university bought him out for a year’s salary of $195,000.

Whitehead compiled a 250-171-54 record at Maine.

However, after guiding the Black Bears to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances his first six seasons, including four Frozen Fours, they have earned just one NCAA berth the past six seasons.

Look for Ohio State to push hard for George Gwozdecky...he almost went to OSU a while back while with Denver...Corkums only gig @ Div.1 Coaching will be @ UMaine...if it happens/if he throws his name into the fray.

Cronin has a record at NU for six years that's worse than TIMMAY's last six. That's the guy you want as your new head coach, the guy to rebuild the program into a winner and put butts in the seats? Really inspiring.

I agree. I wouldn't want him based on his record at NU
