Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

How many trophies has he won? Big difference between making a team competitive and winning championships. Maybe he will do it but I'm not completely sold. Monty has won trophies with Dubuque.
Trophies? I'm worried about getting them back on the nat'l scene before I'm worried about trophies. Nate has a ring(as a coach) from the 99 team if that helps:) Union made it pretty far last year with Nates kids

per Jake Rutt on Twitter: "I owe coach whitehead, he let my youth hockey dream come true and I can't thank him enough but I cant explain how excited I am for next year"

Or, did Leaman have that one year of success that he parlayed into the PC job, because of the great job that Rick Bennett did actually identifying (and helping develop) those players?

One thing about Rick Bennett, is how many guy's bosses leave for a "better" job, and then he inherits the team, and actually does better than his predecessor?

Leaman has done what I would term a "very nice" job at PC but he isn't exactly burning HEA to the ground. If Cronin isn't out at NU that year, Gilles isn't at PC and they (PC) are a lower-middle level HEA team this year.

All of this is a moot point though...PC to Maine is effectively a lateral move and one that I highly doubt he would entertain unless there is a substantial increase in compensation (which it doesn't appear there is).

Leaman's a good coach, done a good job everywhere he's been, but I like where Maine's focus seems to be - Monty and Cro.

Corkum named interim head coach: http://goblackbears.com/sports/m-hockey/2012-13/releases/20130410uwduac

Was this really necessary? Trying to keep Bob happy? Does Denver have an interim coach? Seems really odd to me

It seemed strange to me and I saw a few tweets from alumni wondering what was up, but a very knowledgeable source says it is just housekeeping and not an indication of anything long term. The focus remains on Montgomery, although there is a question of money (I'm sure they can find it) and some questionable decisions Jimmy has made in the past (DUI, recruiting violations) that may give the administration pause. If I had to bet the house I would still bet on Jim though.

Maybe Maine should be looking at Bennett?

What recruiting violations did Jimmy have and at what job? I could care less about his DUI, I'll assume that was a one time thing

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Especially, since I read in some article that the assistant coaches contracts are up in June. But I suppose it has something to do with having someone and some continuity in place on the recruiting front, and trhe day to day management of the hockey operations: scheduling, travel arrangements, player's scholastics and summer training schedules and such.

The person I talked to said DUI' s, plural. Even the players know about them so that raises issues. As for the recruiting violations, I don't have details but it was confirmed to me by two different independent sources, one of whom had spoken to no less an authority than Grant. There is something to the allegations but Jim would tell you it had nothing to do with why he wound up in Dubuque. I have no reason to think otherwise. I think Jim wanted head coaching experience and Dubuque was the opportunity he sought.

These are obstacles but they can be overcome if the university chooses. That's why I still think Jimmy is the front runner.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Not to worry, I seriously doubt the selection committee gives a ratsarse who the internut nutcases think should replace Whitehead. But they will care who draws the biggest crowds quickly into the Fond and keeps them in their seats for years to come. ;)

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

I have it on good authority that Leaman is very happy at Providence. He signed an extention, they are renovating the arena and he has quite the goalie, which can take you far in this sport. It would be very expensive to pry him away from PC - if he even wanted to come.

It was reported yesterday that the age of the Skype coach has passed at Maine. Whoever the head coach is, he will have two full-time assistants and a volunteer. According to data from the DoE, neither Corkum or Kerluke are classified as full-time coaches. Football is the only sport with more than one full-time coach (they have 6) so that is a major upgrade to the program. It also means we'll need someone with goaltending experience on the staff.

My choice is Greg Hirsch. He is a graduate of the program, was coached by both Shawn and Grant and has spent the past 15 years as the head coach at Orono High School. Not only is he a member of the Maine hockey family, he still has passion for the school and he would be a solid character addition to the program. One thing I have learned over the years is you can never have enough character in a locker room. I have mentioned his name to people both within and outside the program and have gotten positive feedback. I have not heard anyone say anything negative about him. I'm hoping he will receive serious consideration.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

assistant coaches must have connections in USHL, BCHL/AJHL, NAHL and Montreal and Toronto

Not many players coming from Orono

Look at what Norteheaster, PC and Lowell brought in as asts

great guy I am a sure but U Maine does not ahve time for a guy to start introducing himself to Omaha, Green Bay and Vernon

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Wow, Jimmy in Denver, that would take the air out of Alfond for sure

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Like many things, first come, first served. DU's no bunch of dummies. These candidates wont and cant afford to wait around for the gem job because theres never any guarantee, so you have to grab the best available at the time. To assume you can just take your sweet old time making this evaluation because you have what you think is a good coach waiting in the wings is just plain foolish. If you fail to plan, plan for failure.
