Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Not sure why Leaman wouldn't be interested? Not above the other guys? He taken 2 programs, Union and PC from nothing to competing at a high level in short amount of time. What about the coach at RPI, Appert. He has recuited some top talent to Troy. Everyone needs to take their Jimmy blinders off and look around. If Jimmy is the best candidate, great. But their might be something better out there.

There might be....dont know who but there might be. So who ? I'm guessing Leaman wants to settle down after restarting two programs already, besides we already stole Jons alternator, now his coach ?:D What would you speculate would be Leamans possible interest? Yeah I know, we dont know till we ask, but this board is all about speculation....your words I believe :D

Leaman would be a top choice in my book and he may not be interested. I think Corkum should get a look. I don't think Pellerin will get it, nor do I think Cronin wants it.

Leaman have a young family? thats enough to get someone to Orono, good schools, pretty safe environment, challenge of getting a program up and running again, familiarity with the area, chance to be a god :D which he'll never be at PC. And the added benefit of ripping Jons heart out :D

Leaman signed a 5 yr deal with PC and has just completed his second season there...can't see PC letting him off the hook with 3 yrs left and to another Hockey East School...and I would think Leaman has his goals/plan/mission @ PC...and with that who would be your top 5 names to throw into the UMaine Coaching pool..?

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Wish Corkum had a chance to show what he could do for a half a season or so at least. His 'attachment' to Whitehead certainly cant help. So how do you evaluate him with no record of his own? Granted Jim hasnt been a college head coach, but he has ripped it up in the USHL, along with his other pedigrees.

Dont get me wrong, it will be interesting to see who applies....or as you say, who wants to be a God in God's country. :D

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Corkum is hurt by the fact that he was Tim's assistant and we need new energy into the program. If Tim had maintained the sucess of his first 6 years or so, and was retiring, then Corkum would be on the short list. But you need to look outside the current coaching staff when you are looking for new energy and a new direction. On paper Jim may not be the most qualified candidate out there since he has no college head coaching experience, but I would probably take him over Pellerin, who has no college coaching or recruiting experience, and Cronin who put up a couple decent teams at Northeastern during his tenure there but still had a sub .500 record if I remember correctly. No one else will bring the same excitement and enthusiasm on day one as Jim would, and that is one of the most important things right now. I think he will be able to sell the program to recruits based on his history and enthusiasm, and I think the Alfond will be rocking with his return.

Leaman is a proven coach, has spent some time in Maine, but I don't see him leaving PC at this time. Cavanaugh should be a head coach, but he has got to be planning on York retiring in the next few years and would certainly be on the short list there. Gwoz is out a job, but was making far more at Dever than Maine would ever pay him. I don't see any of these three as being very likely.

Whomever we get needs to show that the program is going in the right direction within a couple years.

I think some UVM fans are hoping Kevin Sneddon will apply. Cold weather coach, Hockey East, and Frozen Four experience.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Hey TBF!! Does this mean you're coming back to the board? ;)

It is likely. I have been lurking and I still listen to every game on the radio that I cannot attend or watch on T.V. etc. My schedule for the past few years, and for a few more to come, has been crazy with 2 boys that play 3 sports etc. I did tire of the same old things being hashed over and over. I hope all has been well with you and your family ck, along with the rest of the Maine faithful.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

What this will come down to if Montgomery is hired is this.........he needs to be able to recruit at least a handful of top level players and he needs to be able to motivate the team. Those 2 things were TIMMAY's undoing. His recruiting was sub-par and inconsistent and he pretty much ran a Country Club where no one was willing to put in the extra effort......the extra training........the extra sacrifice that is needed to win games at this level.

Coaches move on all the time, Its very likely Leaman isn't interested but I'd say he goes to the top of a short list if interested. Cav from BC, again who knows but stick the bait out there and see if it bites? Appert from RPI, looks to be DU bound but who knows? Jimmy and Grant, certainly would bring instant excitement to Orono, money would flow for sure.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

I'd like to see it be someone with experience in the college game, or juniors. Maybe I am just having Tim Army flashbacks, but I'm not sure that an AHL guy is the answer.

Broad brush, I know.

Having college experience is important. Abbott said both he and the president are committed to keeping the program financially sustainable and developing the student athlete.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

:D Dam, that Montgomery guy says all the right words. :)

Jim Montgomery, a former Hobey Baker Award finalist who helped lead the Black Bears to their first national championship in 1993, wants to see UMaine back at the top.

“As an alum, all I want is the program to return to national prominence,” said Montgomery, who is in his third season as the head coach and general manager of the Dubuque Fighting Saints, an amateur team in the United States Hockey League.

He said he is interested in pursuing the UMaine position.

“I want to be proud of the University of Maine Black Bear hockey program,” Montgomery said. “If it’s me that they would like to be the head coach, that would be fantastic. If not, I hope they find somebody else who can get it back at a prominent national level.”

Sounds like he's been hearing a few things over the past few years.

"Jimmy, what the hell is going on up at UMaine?"
