Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

You think? 4 or 5 years ago I would have agreed. But now, since he's a proven coach at least in the juniors with experience at RPI as an assistance, an obviously good coach with results, I wonder how a national search is important. Other than a guage to see who is interested in this position, I cant really say who out there would be a better coach at UMaine. And how do you prove it before hiring him (or her :D) . I'm beginning to think you throw the world of possible coaches in front of me and I still pick Montgomery. I'm not biased or anything. :)

And he recruits players for his USHL team right? Must be doing something right in that department.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

AND you can bet that other Div.1 Schools have taken noticed also...especially the ones in search of a NEW Coach...

Exactly. You want Jimmy, you better act quick, cause someone else is gonna go after him if you don't.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

If we had any media people in Maine who had some balls (or cared?).......I'd love to see an in-dpeth report on the entire department and how it has been run over the past decade.

Bingo! You hit the nail on the head. There is zero media pressure, accountability and in depth reporting put on from the newspapers, radio and television here in maine . The fluff pieces that come out of the PPH are absolutely pathetic with no substance at all. The reporting in bangor is much better then here in southern maine but all it is is reporting with zero balls yes you LARRY and is woefully inadequate.

When you look across country and you hear about sec football coaches getting fired or pac-10 basketball coaches getting canned its in part because of the media pressure put on these coaches when things are not going well. The lack of anyone giving two ****s in the media in maine is sad and alarming.

We should be organizing writing campaigns to the newspapers demanding increased coverage and opinions. Maybe they feel that no one cares...

They may have "posted" it back then, but then publicly jettisoned the process and anointed Whitey. I don't think they dare do that again. That is why I believe they will do a national search, even if it is just a dog and pony show to hire someone that has already been picked.

That was kinda what I was getting at. In 2002 they posted it just to cover the requirement knowing full well that they were going to go with the guy Shawn brought in.

I think if they get rid of timmay, that this time they will again post it, but will also invite some targeted individuals to apply which will allow them to quickly close the posting and limit the pool. From there it should be a pretty quick process with the hopes that Jimmy comes out in top

More evidence against Whitehead (or Woodward) going anywhere: http://www.pressherald.com/news/USM-laying-off-7-employees.html

I can't see justifying paying Whitehead not to coach, especially when every campus in the system has to make such drastic cuts. Even if it is private money, the PR would be ridiculously bad.

I think it's the opposite, they can't justify keeping him since ticket sales are dropping off and they will end up losing money if he stays. With private money, it's a done deal.

I am pretty sure the job was never officially posted. Normally they are required to either post the job opening publicly, or with special approval post it internally only, or in this case change an interim status to permanent status without any job posting. I am pretty sure it required approval from the System Trustees.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

The University has caught the "creative accounting" bug and reported expenses and revenues exactly the same for all sports in 2011. The usefulness of such statistics are once again irrelevant.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

I'll believe it when I see it......it's the humane thing to do if they are not extending him. A lame duck coach going into next season would be the worst thing for the program. I'm going to miss Coach Whitehead........a true hockey genius.......a coach with real fire in his belly!

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

So much for three weeks.

Bryan Roche of WMEB will be at the presser at 4PM, as I'm sure Larry and the assorted Bangor TV stations will. Still unconfirmed that he's out, but don't know what else they'd be calling a presser for...maybe an extension? :p

So the 4pm press conference is for real?, then its a done deal, finally

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Dave Eid: A very reliable source has told News 13 Sports that U. Maine hockey coach Tim Whitehead has been fired. Coach Whitehead is expected to meet with his players at 2:00 with an official announcement coming at 4:00.

Before becoming the sports guy at WGME, Dave worked at channel 7 in Bangor and often stood beside me in the press box. I'd take his word for it.

ETA: Most players will be heading to Alfond for workouts starting at 2 so the timing makes sense.

Lee Goldberg: **BREAKING** NEWS CENTER has confirmed Tim Whitehead has been fired as coach of UM Hockey Team

WMEB will be streaming the press conference live on its website at 4PM.

ETA: Larry's column
