Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Jimmy probably cares a lot. If he has talked with Abbott they might have an agreement not to do it until after their season is over. We criticize the administration a lot but surely they're not complete idiots. There must be some reason for the current situation.

so umaine is somehow the etiquette and polite school of the year?
I've heard so far in this forum there doing it for respect of the NCAA tournament and now it's respect for jimmys program he runs, what next they haven't announced the decision out of respect for the NHL playoffs? Umaine announcing there decision isn't that big of deal to really anyone outside of maine.

Do you have a better theory?

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Maine has become a losing program over the past 6 years, both in conference and nationally.

27% of D1 programs make the NCAA tournament each year. Over the past 6 years, Maine's NCAA qualification rate is 17%.

Whitehead and Standbrook kept the ship afloat for 6 years, and deserve our thanks for it. But anyone who doesn't recognize that failure has become the new normal in Orono just isn't paying attention.

Orono's prime location alone has to be worth at least a couple hundred grand to a guy like Gwoz, what with its stunning natural beauty, cultural diversity and close proximity to a world class city like Bangor.
I would think the age factor(59)would be against him/not that he can't Coach...but would figure they would?/will? go with a younger Coach(imo).

Why wouldn't the admin just say that then? Why create uncertainty if you don't need to?
Because they know alot of long time fans are fed up so they want the illusion that they are doing this intensive evaluation, when in reality they don't dare pull the trigger because o f the year remaining on the contract?

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Nothing really makes sense to me with what umaine is doing right now. I believe if they were going to fire him it would have been done. Hope I am wrong on this one.
Hard to imagine they don't have there mind made up yet, so if there minds are made up this 20 day evaluation is asinine, Just rip the band-aid off and get it done with.
I get what your saying drew but there should be no point in waiting to make this decision as it should have already been made, seems trivial that they wouldn't have made there decision over some silly non sense of not wanting to step on anyone's toes.

This is all I can come up with whats going on in umaine decision making world.

- They could be reluctant to buy him out after buying out cindy and not having the new coach make much progress, Probably hearing it from the cindy faithful obsessed crowd. Though he did completely start over, so I'm not sure we can be critical of him.

-Maybe there waiting to fire him to get the coach they want and if he's not interested they might not pull the trigger?

- They could have already decided to fire him, but want to show timmay that they thought about it long and hard so his feelings aren't hurt OR they are trying to secure the funding necessary to oust him and are not sure if they can get the funds for it.

What i think will happen

There trying to apease the fan base who wants him gone, to make it look like there taking his performance seriously with the whole intention of not firing him at all, just to put him on notice and to try and make us a little less angry.
They keep him on to finish his contract and come out with some tough words like "if the ship doesn't turn around this season then they won't renew it next year, making it seem like if he turns it around he could get an extension, not lame duck but close.
It is still a possibility that this happens, its not set in stone that his contract does not get renewed.

Hope I am wrong....

If he does stay on board, they should demand at minimum that Maine gets to the TD Garden and makes the NCAA's. In most cases, if you increase your win total by 50 percent you're doing something right, but in the case of TIMMAY, even 50 percent more wins next year won't get them into the NCAA's.

Increasing just the wins at home by 50% wouldn't be enough...

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

I think folks on here are discounting how important Dubuque could be to Jimmy. Him and his players have probably put a lot into the season and he might not want to see it be in vain. If there is a deal between him and Abbott I think its reasonable to believe this could be one of the conditions.

I don't think the administration would genuinely believe doing some fake review of the program is going to appease fans or bring them back in force. Its scary to think attendance was so bad last year coming off of a season where they made the HE tourney final and NCAA tournament. I can't imagine what it will be like this year if Timmy comes back.

Really does anything make sense these days..in College Sports you have good and bad Adminstrations...look at Rutgers/Auburn...you wonder what there thinking, knowing full well that something is not right and either looking the other way or making the lame excuse...it's like Pro Sports if you don't have a good Owner(UMaine)coupled with a good G.M.(Abbott)...well you are for certain to have a half-a## product.(imo). We will find out in less then 2 weeks either for the good or for the worst. Bet @ the Frozen 4 in Pittsburgh this weekend the Rumor Mill will run rampant....like a Soap Opera 101.

Haven't kept up with this thread carefully, so answer me this: Has the AD/administration actually acknowledged that they're "evaluating" whether to bring Timmay back or not, or is that speculation on y'all's part?

Hell yeah, the admin acknowledged they were doing a 3 week evaluation of the program, whatever that means.

I'm in the camp this is just politicial rhetoric to make it look like nothing was all that seriously wrong with the program but that the fans seemed to want something drastically done so they will look deeper into the coach and program to appease the fans. Ultimately, towards the end of this week they take the chicken chit approach and announce that Timmay hasnt done all that bad not to warrant granting him his last year of his contract, but also state things must improve or they'll be looking in a new direction. Typical easy-way-out and everyone is more or less happy approach. Ballz-less University answer is my guess, we've seen and heard it before.

Unfortuneately, attendance is going to suffer once again....thats the only thing that could possibly tip the decision in the direction of chit canning this chump Whitehead right now.

Oh, but they do get good grades, but basket weaving 101 doesnt prepare you much for life....but they're all aspiring pro hockey players...that wont happen, but for a few.
