Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Ben Bishop opened with a 5-0 shutout of Carolina last night, including 45 saves...now lets check College Hockey Coaching openings: UConn,UAA,Denver......M.....??????

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

He's the athletic director. It was his call.
I don't think it was his call when he gave Cindy the boot, it was the Presidents funds, not the Athletic Depts, that paid her off

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

And now she's gone radio silent (literally chickened out of a scheduled Radio 850 KOA appearrence yesterday morning). She's MIA since suddenly and without explanation canning Gwozdecky this past Monday 4/1, one of the top five D-1 hockey coaches in the U.S.

At least she's got ballz....err wait, maybe not :D

Stop picking on Chris. He's our resident troll....we love him, we need him and couldnt live without him. Try to think of him as your pet...like a chihuahua. :D

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

After Abbott punted the decision it may be a done deal. I can't believe the university is even considering going into the season with a lame duck head coach.

This is what I have been stating all along.......Abbott and Fergie are going to end up doing the worst thing possible (surprise!)........either sign Coach Whitehead to an extension or get rid of him. Let this be a warning to all that are considering voting for Abbott when he runs for office next time!

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

So the decisions been made? There's something beyond the line in the BDN story about it ultimately being up to (Ferguson)?

OK, what did we miss here? I've seen and heard nothing since last Friday's (3/29) BDN story stating - "Ferguson will eventually make the decision."

We are in Week 2 of The Evaluation. The Decision is set to be made by President Ferguson after Week Three.

We don't hear about the Denver president firing Gwoz, it was done by the AD. Abbott punted on The Decision and deferred to President Ferguson. An AD might be concerned about the won-loss record and on-the-ice performance, but the president of a school will be more concerned with those off ice accomplishments that fans don't care about.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Sure...sign Whitey to an extension...and he can be our problem for eternity. What could be finer.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

Priceless, at the risk of repeating myself, I think you've got this a little confused. If you think tHyphen axed Gwoz without approval from tPursestrings, you've got another think coming. Once the approval was made, she did the dirty work. It will be the same thing in Orono, if it happens: Steve will decide that Whitey should be gone, he gets approval from Fergie (who holds the pursestrings), and Steve makes the announcement. I realize you can't see straight when it comes to Republicans, but you really need to clean your glasses on this.

Was it all done in public? Did it take a three week evaluation? I don't give a crap what political party Abbott is in, this whole thing is a charade.

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

So to repeat: Do we actually know that Abbott "punted" or are we going off the line in the story? Because that line is likely a throwaway, tossing respect to the President. I tend to agree with UncleRay's scenario unless someone has new information beyond that 1 quote.

Denver's season ended Friday night. By Monday afternoon, Gwozdecky was fired. No evaluation. No cooling off period. Gone. People don't seem to be expressing their anger at the president of DU but they sure seem to be targeting the AD. You want to say it was the whole administration that punted? Fine. But Maine's season ended March 15 and a lame duck coach is still at the reigns. Someone sure as hell kicked the can down the road in hopes someone else would take care of it or people would just forget there is even a problem. If Abbott wants to be the public face of the athletics department, to accept his paychecks and sit in the big chair, then he needs to accept responsibility when things go FUBAR.

Heard a rumor from a real good source today, the 190,000 to send Timmay down the road is there, one donor, one check, bye bye. Still don't think it happens though

wow... guess someone's been golfing with the wrong buddies.
and yeah, I heard that a couple weeks ago... I even heard that the replacement has been to Orono to meet with the AD in the past month... so no national search.

but who knows.

speaking of great coaching... did anyone else happen to notice that Diamond scored by being out front, not by being one of 3 or 4 Soundtigers on the puck in the corner... in other words their coach seems to want the players IN POSITION to do something.

WHO IS the Soundtigers head coach, anyway?

Re: Maine Summer 2013 - Pizza Season

The DU situation is completely different. I don't get the impression that DU was unhappy with Gwoz's results. Their press release implied that they couldn't agree on money. Since that was a process that had been going on for several years and an impasse reached, there was no need for the type of evaluation being done in Orono. It sounds like the powers that be at DU came to a decision during the season, waited for the season to be over, and had the appropriate person deliver the news. We can argue about when an evaluation should be conducted. One could make a good case that it should be done during the season so an answer is ready at the end of the season. I agree with Steve that it is best done after the season. Or perhaps started during the season and completed after the season. But it should be soon after (read: by now).

I don't like this situation any better than the rest of you. But a public university has processes that must be gone through or else chaos will reign. I'd like Whitey to be gone. I think he's a lousy coach and is bad for the program. I think keeping him around for a lame-duck year would put the program into a further hole. But I won't be surprised if he is around for another year. 200 large is a lot of money. Money that taxpayers who don't care about athletics want spent reducing their tax burden. If I won the lottery tomorrow and gave Ferguson 200 grand to make Whitey go away, they still wouldn't be happy - they would still want that money spent on books and desks and lab equipment. With no inside info whatsoever, I think it would take donations of half a million minimum before the U will buy out Whitey's contract if the evaluation comes back recommending dismissal. If.

I think the delay is out of respect for Dubuque. I can't imagine Abbott didn't know a couple months ago what he was going to do.

Ooh I like that line of thought. Good point Drew. When does their season end?

speaking of Dubuque

someone mentioned that it was odd that the University did NOTHING to honor the 20th anniversary of the '93 team (the players, not the videographer/sock washer)...
I wonder if something WILL happen this fall, during 2013... still the 20th year anniversary of the championship... maybe there will be more former players on campus.
and maybe Paul can come get his ring during the celebration.

(one can wish)

Perhaps the new coach (who had a little bit to do with that champoinship) could take the reins on the celebration.

I'll agree with this if there's no definitive resolution after the "evaluation" and Maine's program is essentially in the wind for as long as 18 months with regard to next season and beyond.

I don't think waiting 3 weeks equates to kicking the can down the road or punting.

Ooh I like that line of thought. Good point Drew. When does their season end?

I think they have a couple more weeks. When I looked last weekend they were still playing RS games. It's the only thing I can come up with. If Timmy was coming back why would you create a bunch of unnecessary uncertainty?

As far as Ferguson being involved, I'm sure money matters more than anything else and I can't imagine last year went very well as far as that is concerned. It's embarrassing seeing the rink half full on national television as well.

I hope we see something next fall for the '93 team, an absolute travesty not to honor them.
