In addition to Peter Cisar de-committing… Austin Peters, Zac Sommers, James Taylor, Jared Coccomiglio, Leo Eperjesi, and Patrick Raftery no longer Maine recruits according to Heisenberg’s 2025 list here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/1USsyO-hgQhC4JD5HGGUDkgm_1qUeEWbhB-EyceEwTSI/htmlview#

Some are expected. But I thought Raftery and Eperjesi would make the cut. I’m guessing the 26 player limit is making things very tight for next year.

The 26 player roster sucks. Injuries could present problems with the teams who choose to go that route.

Would love to say I’m surprised by some of these names, but Maine has some better players on the list that may come sooner that likely pushed these players out.

I hope that Maine is getting to the point where Barr & Co. no longer have to cast this wide of a recruiting net and keep having this many de-commits going forward. You don't see the same amount of de-committing at other HE programs....it's not a good look IMO....especially Maine which seems to be trending toward being perennial Top 10-15 program.

I agree that it's not a good look, but it's unavoidable to an extent when you go from a bottom feeder in Hockey East to top 10 team. Eperjesi committed 9/22/24, Rafferty committed 7/31/21. I think both players will be better than former Maine regulars like Adrian Bisson and AJ Drobot, but not good enough to play for a top 10 team, which Maine has turned into since they committed. Roster size reducing, and how good Maine has been in the portal also make it tougher for some of these guys to earn a spot in Orono. It sucks and I feel bad for them, but D1 athletics is a business.

Lost a bunch of guys and still a bunch on the list although I'd guess alot of those won't be in Orono.

Here is a watch list of recruits that are local either in Maine or in Canada near by. Not sure if they are on Maine’s radar, but thought it was worth tracking these players. The Canadian kids are highly rated by neutral zone. The kids from Maine are not yet rated by Nuetral zone. But I think Declan Wotton will be highly rated since he was a national camp invite and based on their grades from individual viewings. The 09 birth years can begin to be contacted by coaches after 1/1/2025 in couple weeks. I’m hoping the coaching staff can retain any top kids from Maine. With Fredericton so close to Orono, you would think Maine would have an advantage there too… but BU got one of the top recruits out of Fredericton, NB.

On Nuetral Zone they have a list of the top still eligible and uncommitted 04 birth years. There are 53 players from major junior on that list that are rated a 4.0 or 4.25. Next season there will be only 1 player with a rating at 4 or higher on Maine’s roster which is Josh Nadeau(if he comes back). We know that there are definitely 2 openings at C. We are losing Scott, Breen, and Renwick at center. We also lose Makar at LW. There also could be some tough cuts for Nobes and Carney(Carney likely graduates anyways). So it seems there can easily be from 2 to 4 spots freed up for these highly rated major junior players. I wonder if Maine will get some of this high end talent committed like UNH, Providence, etc… has already done.

For example:

Jacob Matthieu(Rimouski(QMJHL)) - 5/5/04, 1st LC, NZ 4.25, 5’11”, 190 lbs - speedy, quick release, buzzes, high IQ, good vision and playmaking

His hometown is near the border of Maine over near Jackman. His family would take 201 South then over Route 2. It is 3.5 hours drive but that is likely the closest NCAA D1 University to his house.

He is captain of his team so likely he is of good character.

Maine lose Mitton next year as well. And Breazele. It's going to be an interesting off season.

Yes, which brings up why I feel there are openings next season that can be filled with 04 birth years from major junior. I’m not sure any of the 05 or 06 would be brought in early.

Losses:
********
Mitton - RW - physical, high motor, quick release, cannon one timer, pp weapon
Makar - LW - big skates well, physical, net front, grinder, good in transition
Renwick - LC- big frame, skates well, physical, net front
Breen - LC - small, nifty, quick, playmaker, high skill, leader
Scott - LC - fast, skilled, great wrister, great face offs, leader
Breazeale - LD - big stalwart, pucklugger, leader

Rookies:
*********
Peluso(BCHL-0)- 1st RW - shifty, deceptively, a buzz saw
James(USHL-0)- 3rd RC - strong on the puck, good in the corners, good passer

Replacements
***********
Peluso(Mitton)
James(Renwick)
? (Makar)
? (Breen)
? (Scott)
? (Breazeale)

So the priority it seems would be to get some centers, preferably that are left shot that can shift to LW also.

Here is a table where you can see a ton of highly rated recruits from major junior. These type of higher rated 04 recruits are not available from junior A anymore. So I hope Maine jumps on some of these guys. UNH already got 3 commits. I hate to give UNH credit at all, but in this case they actually are doing great getting out in front.

I focused on C and LW. [TABLE="class: grid, align: center, width: 100%"]

Nice work, Sparks.

I haven't been too up on what Maine will lose to attrition until looking at your posts, but those losses could be devastating.

This year is the season to make hay, clearly, and Maine has to restock in a hurry for 24/25, or we're looking at another rebuild.
