Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

You said going to BU or BC "guarantees you nothing" but then admit going to Maine also guarantees you nothing...so I would ask, why mention BU or BC?

Because they both suck ?

I should state the obvious though here in that staying instate at least does guarantee you the opportunity to play for your state and in front of the best college fans in the country. Duh

Black Bears receive commitment from Widmar
By Nathan Fournier
LEWISTON — The University of Maine Black Bears picked up their second commitment in a week as Connecticut Oilers forward Joe Widmar will be in Orono for next season.

This comes days after South Portland native Lucas Michaud announced his intentions to attend the state’s flagship school.

“With the new coaching staff, I think they have a good chance of winning and developing players,” Widmar said. “It’s a hockey school and the team was great, they seem like a dedicated group of guys.”

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

I like what the new regime has done so far. It looks like Maine has three good forwards coming in next year in Pecararo, Vesey, and Widmar. We still need to find a defenseman and more importantly a goalie. I would be surprised if Bjorkung or Salerno ever show up at Maine, really can't see either being quite good enough. Is anyone else worried about goaltending situation? I'm not really sure about either Morris or Romeo.

Re: Maine Recruit Updates: All Are Welcome.......

According to Nolan Vesey defenseman Mark Hamilton of the Vernon Vipers (BCHL) has committed to Maine. The 19-year-old Winthrop, Mass., native has three goals in 11 games. Once an UMass-Amherst recruit I believe.

You are correct. Hamilton originally committed to UMass for the 2013 season. May have de-committed when Toot left.

Talking to a few of the "Rink Rats" at UMaine the last few weeks and some are siding with you that there is speculation that the Coaching Staff is looking to add another netminder to go with both Morris & Romeo...just going with the scuttlebutt talk that there are a few out there but to convince one of them that Maine is the Program to go to,the 'Tending would be a wide open for the 3....

There's no speculation involved, I believe Gendron confirmed publically that he will be bringing in a goal tender next year.

I did see that also, just saying what I heard around the rink...no names were named, just a few interesting choices out there(3 ?)...just to convince one that Maine is on the up-swing in rebuilding/retooling and a ideal spot for a young netminder to go to.

Yeah, what I was trying to say was that I think he might go after a Demko type guy to come in and take over the starting job instead of a number three type goalie. If we can get some decent goaltending next year I think Maine could be pretty good. Others can disagree with me, but there is no way we get Vesey and Hamilton a year ago. I'm really impressed with the job Red has done recruiting so far.

Yep, me too...and the word will get around quickly that the Bears are retooling to build upon their tradition. Good recruits , the best atmosphere in college hockey and the best fans anywhere. The tsunami is taking shape. :)

Love the size, but can't we find a D that shoots right? O'Connor is the only one on the roster and he leaves after this year. Are we going into next year with 8 left D?

Coach Leach is quite the asset too. There was a great interview he gave on the Coach's show yesterday at Season's. He really talked up the University and said campus is as nice as it's always been and then some, especially out on the mall. He also said that his daughter swam for Maine and his dad's twin brother also went to Maine; so even before his first stint as a Coach, when things were just starting to take shape under Walsh's leadership, he had ties to Maine.
