Maine Offseason 2020: We Stay Home But Swayman Leaves

If you're unhappy with playing the trap because it admits "no talent", would you rather this "no talent" team try and play a run-n-gun style and attempt to get into shootouts and lose more games, or play low event hockey and maybe win a few more?

Snore fest, again. Low event hockey equals sub .500 teams. Another classic example today.

Maine did well to keep it close. Once it went to 3 on 3 in OT I was quite certain Maine was going to lose. I think it took less than a minute. Too many skilled players for BU when given open ice. Gendron bragging about his fast physical team last night on the local news. Quote from Gendron "that's who we are". Maine was fortunate that BU did not capitalize on the PP. To Maine's credit, their penalty kill is very good, but continually being short handed is disastrous long term.

When they work hard, their style can be effective. But in the long run, not going to win many games on that style alone. When a player works their butt off each shift only to see one of the few wide open chances missed, psssstt..., deflation, like air out of a balloon. This isn’t the old Lake State hard working grinding teams and it’s definitely not Jeff Jackson behind the bench orchestrating and motivating.
Too many lazy shifts, players not skating hard, but reaching instead.
But, it is what it is....

A crucial difference there is that Jackson recruited real talent, even as his Lake State teams gooned it up... So, they could finish when they needed to.

Maine? Not so much. (Actually, pretty-much never.)

That was the worst a team has made BU look since their opening loss to PC. BU couldn't solve Maine's excellent job of defending the blue line, especially on the PP. I also think BU thought it would be an easy game after they scored so quickly. Our goalie once again was the difference (we have been outshot every game so far, usually by a lot). I'll be interested to see how today's game goes.

Greenway is such a bum. Didn't even skate to try and defend that cross-ice pass, just lunged and reached with a stick.

Maine seems to never, ever shoot the puck on an odd-man rush. It's always pass, pass, pass. Must be very easy to defend.

This system just doesn't work. None of the good teams anywhere play like this. Red is stuck in the 90's. Playing to not lose the games and keep them close. The team actually has a surprise amount of talent out of the freshman and could play if they weren't forced to watch other teams outnumber them everywhere on the ice from the systems.

Key words are “none of the good teams”.

Red, as the Coach, can attempt to play whatever style he feels gives them the best chance to win based on the talent of individual players. I get that. Great way to steal a playoff game or two when facing teams with speed. Season long, year after year? Nope. A boring middle of the pack at best finish.
We are seeing a case of “these are the cards dealt to me”.
Mirror, self examination and a new deck of cards is needed.
Minus Swayman, it has become obvious, AGAIN.

The 3 on 3 OT sucks imo.
No excuses for maines loss.
Whats wrong with one 5 on 5 OT then a tie if no score. Too old school I guess.

Absolutely. A lot of hockey purists hated the thought of it right off the bat. I was previously open to the 3-on-3 and shootouts but the entire thing is lame. The OT nonsense is terrible with one team just grabbing possession and skating around for half of the overtime looking for an opening, changing out, and preventing the other team from changing. Shootouts in theory are ok but you get one team celebrating a "win" which is actually a tie. It's just stupid. I'd hate to see someone get hurt in meaningless game action (nationally) all for a measly point in league action just for seeding purposes anyway.

I'm of the firm belief that a tie is perfectly acceptable outcome of a sporting event. Hopefully this is just a year or two thing for however long the COVID era lasts, but I'm wary of them deciding to keep it.

After playing 60 minutes it's obvious another format is required. Ask the players and they will tell you they love 4 on 4 and 3 on 3 hockey. It allows them to show their skill and be creative with more open ice. The loser still receives a point and the win is weighted in the pairwise ranking. What I really dislike is the shootout. If there is a tie after 3 on 3 then so be it.

This Red team wouldn't score in OT whether it be 2x2 or 7x7. That's the issue.

Good news is that Maine is up to #43 in the PW. With a strong finish, they might crack the Top 40!

I’m okay with 4x4 but even that is a gimmick. Larry said early in the year that because of 3x3 an ot win only gets you 55% of the pairwise points so it really isn’t much different than a tie. To me all this nonsense is extra complication that doesn’t add to the competition.
