Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

The season is still young, but Tim is currently 6-0. There have been three "blow outs" with scores of 11-2, 11-2 and 7-2. Apparently, he is able to both recruit and coach in New Hampshire. Future Maine player Patrick Shea is on his team. Too early yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if his team wasn't invited to play in the large school post season tournament again this year. Last year, Kimball Union (7 or 8 seed), defeated the number one seed in the first round. Nice to see him doing well.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I am joining the food drive for the benefit of the Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program (http://www.mchpp.org/).

For every shot on goal Steven Swavely notches this weekend I pledge one can of food. For every goal he scores I am pledging $5.

Additionally, in the spirit of Mr Overtime Ken Schott, for every game this weekend, men's or women's, that goes to overtime I will also pledge a can of food.

I am challenging all University of Maine Hockey fans and alumni to join me in pledging money or food for your local pantry. Read the link below and let RWD know what you will be pledging. You can be straight forward or have fun with it.

Wish I had seen this earlier. The Shaw's pullout from helping local pantries is old news and has been going on for years. Mid Coast was the last in Maine to still be getting Shaw's food. It's a shame.

I would encourage ticapnews and anybody else who joins in on this type of pledge, to pledge dollars. Cold, hard cash. That is the best way to help a food bank or soup kitchen. With the access they have to certain sources and the fact they are non-profits, they can make grocery money go much, much further than any consumer can. I know it sounds funny, but the best thing you can give a food drive is money.

It's too bad he failed at Maine. Likeable guy, honest and with a sense of humor to boot. He has apparently found his niche. I wish the timing had been right for him to take over the USM in Gorham. Great facility, great area to be and apparently easily recruitable. I caught a game a couple weeks ago. Excellent hockey, very comfortable seating, great visibility, a huge eating and warming area with large glass to the ice, and all that for a 3 dollar ticket. Recruits from Sweden, California, Tenessee, and all over Canada. Great brand of hockey for anyone nearby and you have no problem getting in and out. New coach doing well as is ex UMainer Kevin Swallow at UNE

So just for the sake of not letting the thread slip to pg 3 let play rank the 1st half of the season. And if anyone gives a grade higher than a D there needs to be a legitimate explanation.

I'm going with a D- The only reason it's not an F is they're 11th not 12th in HE and they finally did win a couple games and raise the G per game avg from 1 to a blistering 1.82.

I'd give a C. I expected them to be a bad hockey team, finishing in one of the bottom two spots in the league, and they are a bad hockey team. "Meets expectations."

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

They play hard which is better than last year. The goalie situation is better than last year. The talent level is down, no Shore or Hutton. The Ws and Ls are about what I expected. I'm still waiting for Dane Gibson to show me some offense, I won't hold my breath on Rai ever contributing, I like Robbins, Michel and Perez. Jury still out on Becker.I'll go C minus.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

I'm giving them a D ... I knew fully that this could be a long and up and down season ... with that said I have seen no improvement in the defense, yes at times ... but too many turnovers in there own end ... hard time just to get out of there own end at times ... there is no offense, they have no real sniper that on the ice the other team has to be aware of ... they can not finish a play which has cost them ... Goaltending also coming into the season was a huge question-mark and is still in a sense ... Morris played well during the recent winning streak but I have no confidence in him, I thought and still think that down the road McGovern will be the man for Maine between the pipes, he looked good early and then the injury(no excuse, that's hockey)...which I feel did him no good and word has it he still is not fully mended ... so I have HOPE for him to emerge. Overall play has been better in that they do play hard, but playing hard and playing smart are two different things and they are not talented enough to cover there mistakes ... I thought this was a 9th place team when the season started and W's/L's between 10 wins for a low and 14 wins for a high ... but this is clearly a 11th or 12th place team that will be hard pressed to get 10 wins. Long season to say the least and next season(imo)could very well mirror this season ... which in turn will have to be looked at the Coaching Staff. This team needs help in all areas.

Re: Maine Hockey: Summer 2015 on the Stillwater

Id say a C+. From the goal on out is improving, not real fast but its getting better. I see things in the freshman that I like. Size is up which bodes well in the future and I see some skills blossoming from the new kids. It takes time, especially on the defensive end of things. So I think that is coming along. Up front, the coaches need to bring in some real talent. I mean a couple at least guys with some great hands that can make things happen. Need more creativity in the forwards. The sluggers and monsters up front wont cut it all the time.

They've played some very good teams tough all year. Just need to make the next transition...more high end talent coming in in the next 2 years would help considerably in that regard. Guite has his work cut out for him.

F.

I don't see any other way to parse it out at this point than to conclude that the program is failing. Still a fan, still watching and rooting for my Bears, but this team is a day late and a dollar short and I don't expect a turnaround in the foreseeable future.

The worst part of this post is, nobody is going to argue with you :( I thought by now I'd be able to get rid of my LSSU avatar but no

The real scary part is the last sentence...in that things look awful bleak now and could continue for a long time after...sad to say and think. I can't say what to expect next season, but I will throw out this "WHAT IF" .... What if next season is the same as this year...10 wins or less...no scoring...so/so defense...better goaltending but facing too much rubber and defensive break downs that even the best can't muster not wilting under the pressure...Does the Coaching Staff get PINK SLIPS after there contracts are finished..? Maybe just Maybe if that were to happen that the idea maybe to go after a Young and coming Assistant from another University and that has NO TIES to Maine Hockey either as a Player/Assistant Coach/Brothers that played @ Maine/etc. --- Well What If...interesting to hear the Long Range thoughts...and remember this is just "WHAT IF".

New guy here, hey, long time lurker and season ticket holder... Not trying to stir the pot, but I haven't seen it mentioned yet-- the word on the street is that Red already has a two year extension. Maine really missed the boat not making a major effort to hire Montgomery. JMO...

This team is a D at best, and will be in the lower tier of HE for the foreseeable future.

Have not heard the Extension chatter but would not be surprised at all ... The Montgomery situation was never a chance and NOT that it couldn't of happen but the process by UMaine was pitiful to say the least and Denver swooped in and make there pitch ... There Department knew what to do and didn't hold back while UMaine went through the so called Process ... As far as Hockey East your right if the standards stay the same, 10th thru 12th is the calling ... which is SAD but TRUE.

Who knows if Jimmy would have been any better, how is DU doing this year?

The real sad thing is being on the level of LSSU would be a vast improvement.

You are probably right. A coach is only one part a program, though it's a big part. I'd like to believe Red can turn Maine around.

If a kid has a choice between coming to Maine or to Boston or another big city school, I guess I can see the appeal for a kid wanting to go to the city. I always thought there should be some appeal for kids from New Brunswick or Quebec to play in Maine, since it's close to home. Thats obviously not high on the mind of kids who dream of making it to the NHL... The one thing that seems to draw kids to Maine is the atmosphere at Alfond. Hopefully it always will.

It looks like DU could make it into the top 16, but they'll need to beat some good teams to do it.

Yeah. Six months to go through their "process" then, but promote an assistant to head football coach in two weeks now.

Who knows is right but, but I bet more or less people would be incline to believe that Montgomery was more of the solution to jump starting and regaining that edge Maine had from years past...nobody will ever fill the shoes of Shawn Walsh, but I would have felt a whole lot better with Montgomery coming in.

We can THANK in part for this by our last "Hobby" A.D. who was more interested in furthering his Political aspirations then remembering he had a Full Time JOB IN ORONO.
