Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Most likely Maine ends up 8 or 9 hosting New Hampshire or playing at Durham or Hartford. If 10th, too many scenarios to consider, but a potential trip to South Bend still looms...

isn't most league wins the tie breaker that comes before head to head? when two teams have the same number of points? If so, Maine and UConn could end up with the same number points, but the tie breaker goes to maine with more league wins? or does the tie breaker go to UConn for the three points head to head?

At the conclusion of the regular season, teams will be ranked by the number of points accumulated. If two teams are tied for first place, they will be declared co-champions.

For playoff seeding purposes, the following tiebreakers will be used at the conclusion of the regular season

1. Head-to-head results between the tied teams

2. Number of wins in conference play

3. Best record against the first-place team(s), then the second-place team(s), then the third-place team(s), and so on

4. Coin flip

If more than two teams finish in a tie, the same criteria will be applied to reduce the number of teams tied, and then the process will commence again.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

I really hate this new playoff format. It waters the thing down. I loved that Hockey East didn't have 100% participation in the conference tournament. I'm pretty sure we were the only one.

I'm not trying to be a curmudgeon against us. I would say this whether we were 1st, last or anywhere in between. What business do we have "playing for home games" in any sort of elimination format? What business does a 12 seed have competing to be conference champion? If you're in the bottom half of the league, you've earned nothing, and that's OK.

This would be like the NFL changing their format so all 16 teams made the playoffs in each conference, the top 6 got a bye, and here we are in 11th place - possibly in line to host a playoff game? If you need to know what that looks like from this year, that would be the Dolphins (8-8) hosting the Browns (7-9) in the AFC, and the Giants (6-10) hosting the Falcons (6-10) in the NFC. Yahoo! Quality stuff.

Why is a team at that level of the standings getting any sort of reward, and why are teams lower than that participating at all? What is the point of this? Are these games going to be big money draws? Is this supposed to get me more excited and interested as a fan?

I don't like watering down a good product.

Sorry... Bitter Betty's done. :p

It is too bad that Hockey East has gone the way of other Conferences...should be the Top 8 only or mix in say a Play In Game: #9 @ #8 with the winner playing #1 and go from there...but make the regular season count...now a days no clear cut way to make everyone happy and get on board to doing it the so called right way. It is what it is.

It's all about money. Another way of extending the season to generate money for teams and league.

And actually, if you think about it, it's generating that extra money and exposure for the worse teams. While it may be a drop in the bucket, it should have a non-zero effect on parity.

It might in the short term but I think they are dragging it out way too long. The tournament should take a max of two weekends.

I know but that was sort of my point.. I asked if this is supposed to excite me as a fan? Is this a big, worthwhile $$$ draw? Because I view it as a joke.

If the season ended today, the 4 teams playing preliminary round hosts have a whopping average attendance of 3,319... and I am very confident these games aren't going to draw as well as your average game. You can call them 'playoffs', you can call them 'play-ins', you can call them whatever you want, but you're going to have a significant % of fans like myself who are season ticket holders who don't buy playoff tickets in July and aren't making the 4 hour roundtrip drive from Freeport to see #8 battle #9. Then you have to figure many people who attend your average game plan buy single game tickets farther in advance than 5 days prior on a concerted whim. The only reason we'd have a shot at hitting our far too low season average for attendance (4178) is because in this scenario we'd be facing UNH. But if we hold on to 8th and UConn jumps the Wildcats? Forget about it. I'd be utterly shocked if we sold (not gave away, sold) 3,200. And we'd battle Vermont for best attendance of the weekend.

I know they'll try to suck every dollar from whereever they can, but it just feels insulting to the regular season and the league in general to go through with this and see embarrassing 1/2 empty arenas for frivilous games you're calling 'playoffs' or 'play-ins'.

This has nothing to do with Maine. It's a league thing. I'd say this if we were the #1 seed or the #12 seed.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

I will tell you from a PC perspective there is little chance I go to the opening round of the playoff 2 out of 3 series as it is a cash grab

and it is different from EVERY Merrimack game or Maine game this season in what respect?

Spencer Abbott traded to the Blackhawks today for TJ Brennan

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

They jack the prices up for the postseason games at PC...just isn't that interesting to me honestly.
Isn't all the Hockey East Playoffs the same price in each Arena/Rink?...I think they are put in place By Hockey East @ $15 per game if you buy them with your Season Ticket Package and $20 afterwards...I know I could be very wrong but I heard this back a few seasons ago.

PC playoff tickets are $15 for season ticket holders. Purchased mine 2 weeks ago.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

IIRC, Last year tickets for the "single game" playoff game at Orono were the standard UM pricing, minus the "donation" for the good seats. I think that Hockey East takes the ticket revenue for playoff games, and pays the travel expenses of the playoff teams. We went to Providence, but I don't recall what we paid for tickets.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

Looking for a couple of tickets to Saturday nights game. Anyone?

Are they sold out? I bought my ticket last week and it was close. I am only going down for Saturday's game.

Speaking of, any recommendations for dinner before the game? Looking for a Providence equivalent of The Four's.

Re: Maine Hockey 2014-15 Volume 2: Red's Revenge

.......... Looking for a Providence equivalent of The Four's.

Marchetti's in Cranston is 6 miles away and offers classic Italian cuisine. If you enjoy large quantities at a good price this is the place. Not sure what The Four's offers so this information may be useless.
