Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red White Bleeding Blue...

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red White Bleeding Blue...

Jake Rutt becomes the 5th native Mainer to serve as a captain for the Black Bears. Mike McHugh, Chris Imes, Greg Moore and Matt Duffy are the others. Quite an honor for him. I think he will live up to the mantle.

Stu Higgins is the heart and soul of this team. He has been for a while now. This pick was a no-brainer IMO. I tabbed him as a future captain when he was still a sophomore. He reminds me of the #22 in my day: Kent Salfi. Not the most talented player on the team, but his heart and desire cause him to exceed supposed limitations.

Devin Shore was thought of as a possible flight risk, but he isn't ready to play in Dallas yet, and they aren't going to waste a year of his ELC in the AHL. Better to stay at Maine and continue his development as an amateur. They also want Tyler Seguin to mature a little more so he can become a mentor. Their dream scenario is two years from now Shore is making passes to a Tyler Seguin who will be in his prime.

Today the Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association released their awards and both Devin Shore and Ben Hutton were on the first team.

.

Imes?
I'm pretty sure he was from like Birchfield MINN. (Birchdale. I looked it up.)
did Eric Weinrich have a letter on his chest

Did Imes really grow up in Maine? and am I the only one who sees a lot of Imes in Schurhamer?

Schurhamer one of the smartest D I can ever remember. Always seems to make right decision. I think Imes grew up in So.Paris (Me). Weino never wore a letter far as I know

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red White Bleeding Blue...

Mark Anthoine is from Lewiston.
Doh! Serves me right for using last year's media guide for research.

Chris was from Birchdale, MN but was born in Norway, ME. (a fact he just confirmed on Facebook)
Eric left for the Olympics (and the pros) too early. Likely would have been captain if he had stayed.

I have a very high opinion of Chris so I'll have to see a LOT more out of Schurhamer before I start comparing the two. He is off to a good start though.

Has anyone heard of Badger or Musil not coming? Larry's article doesn't mention either of them on next year's team.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red White Bleeding Blue...

I never knew before today that Chris Imes was born in Maine! Way cool. He was a starter for so many consecutive years it seems that it was hard not to remember that he was from Birchdale Minnesota, even after all these years. So Rutt becomes the second native born Mainer to be a captain and wear the number 4. Might as well count Metcalf in there too since he's a naturalized Mainer now living here who also wore 4 as captain!

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red White Bleeding Blue...

Who cares about Notre Dame? This isn't football or basketball. They have little to no hockey history. They aren't going to be a huge draw like North Dakota or Minnesota. UMaine fans aren't dumb enough to think that the Notre Dame hockey team is going to show up quarterbacked by Joe Montana.

Quinnipiac also has a better hockey program at this point, their arena is gorgeous, and they are a bus trip away from the Garden (aka might bring fans). All Notre Dame brings is a few extra games on NBCSN.

Thinking that adding Notre Dame would do ANYTHING for national exposure is foolish. College hockey is what it is, people who are interested in it will seek it out to watch. A casual fan on Friday night isn't going to say just happen to watch Notre Dame hockey and fall in love with Hockey East. People are already fans of certain things and will watch that (like NBA Fridays, or college hoops, or their local NHL team), especially because those things are just as easily available to watch. College hockey on NBCSN is less than a 0.1 ratings wise. That is less than 100,000 viewers. Go us.

LOL.......OK Notre Dame hater. Seriously.......to compare Notre Dame hockey to Quinnipiac hockey is ridiculous. I guarantee you that those Notre Dame games will bang out Alfond Arena........Q would be another blip on the schedule with 3K in the stands.

Tweet from Red Gendron:

2day MEHKY took it's 1st step fwd 4 the 14-15 season electing D.Shore, S.Higgins,&J.Rutt Capt's. They will LEAD Maine to Championship Caliber!

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red White Bleeding Blue...

Yup, Shore, Higgins, Rutt, C and 2 As

It'll be good to see Shore and Rutt wearing emblems of leadership on their sweaters, if only because that seems to make guys less likely to lose their cool and take bad penalties.

(But if I'd had a vote, Hutton would have gotten it.)

Hopefully that Rutt understands this. He's capable of leading and doing the right things in the d-end...just needs to grow up in hockey terms.

Notre Dame will always be a draw...the point was that with all the traveling and the B10 just waiting for the right time to seize upon luring ND over to the B10. With Quinnipiac/UConn added to the Conference this would have eased the Budgets of some of the Schools, not all the league teams are BU/BC. Quinnipiac is building a solid program after a few seasons and with the Frozen 4 appearance they have served notice that they are for real, there recruiting has taken a step forward along with a outstanding Arena/Coaching Staff. I just see that a all New England Conference would have been ideal in the long run...time will tell on what ND brings to the table, but I am very/very leery of the B10 down the road(4-5 yrs from now). And with that said with Conference's playing less games that you could always had a chance at bringing in a ND for 2 games and then going to their place for a pair the following year...but that is all moot for now.

I don't hate Notre Dame, I just feel extremely ambivalent towards them. I'm in my late 20's. Notre Dame hasn't been relevant to the national conversation for much of my lifetime.

Notre Dame has been here before, it was no different. Quinnipiac is a better team. If bringing in a team whose claim to fame is a football team that was last really good in the 1980's is what it takes to sell out the Alfond as opposed to bringing in a top 5 hockey team in the country, we should just shut the program down now. This is college hockey in 2014. Not the Orange Bowl in 1985 (or whenever).

Frankly, I'd rather see neither play league games in Orono, and go back to being guaranteed to see BC and BU every year. THOSE games will sell out.

Agree with all points made. Don't fix what isn't broken.

I agree also. There won't be any type of rivalry that ever develops between ND and any of the Hockey East schools. Maybe a slight one with BC, the whole Catholic school and football thing. But all in all....meh..

Third kudo; you hit that one out of the park.

ND was a short-sighted inclusion for HE in the first place, considering the travel headaches and the future flight-risk. (And yes, even my fellow old-guys who are long-time ND fans don't give a s**t about its hockey program.)

The Q is already a better program than ND, and both it and UConn are right where they need to be in a geographical sense.... Who wants to go to Indiana, anyway, FCS?

Well Notre Dame has already allowed me to see 2 Maine road games in HD. So they have already proved their worth.;) And if schools can't afford to send their team to South Bend every other year then maybe they should re-examine being in D-1 athletics.;)

Quinnipiac will ALWAYS be there for Hockey East if Notre Dame bolts. They would join HE in a heartbeat.
