Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

To be perfectly honest, they looked better last year. Princeton's size gave Maine problems. Huge edge in goaltending, though, and that was the difference...........

That was also my take in listening to the game. I haven't checked stats, but Ouellette has to be one of the best goal tenders in the country. His 3rd shutout of the season. Without him and a talented freshman class, this team would be struggling. Having said that, having good goal tending is always a key to a team's success.

Ranked 12th overall. 8th in sv% and tied for 1st in SO.

Goaltending has surely been key, but it is the physical conditioning and work ethic instilled in this years team that is carrying them. Its one thing to minimize goals against , but its always important to put the biscuit in the other guys barn. :)

Listening to the UHN game last night, and man is wistlin' Dick starting to sound like Timmay in his post game comments. IMO the seat be warming under Dicks buns. With BU's disaster of a 1st half, UHN's slow decay and UML up and down, I don't think it's a stretch for a possible 4th in H.E. this year.

I would say you guys have a shot at a spot higher. Right now your only a point out of third, with three games in hand on my team.

+1...and a different mindset to go with the Coaching...Program has Direction in a Positive way. No more if/ands/buts.

On video anyway, Princeton looked huge.
That wasn't an illusion. The Princeton D-men averaged 196 lbs, and their forwards averaged 190 lbs. By contrast, Maine's D-men average 194 lbs., but our forwards average 178. The situation will be similar tonight, as Cornell players average 196 (D) and 197 (F). But rest easy, the scales will be much more equal when we play BC (194 and 180). (All weights are for players on the roster, not on the ice.) Of course, Maine and BC could increase the average weight of their forwards by getting rid of Cam Brown and Johnny Goudreau, who are listed at 150 lbs. each.

Agree with you. I think that Maine's goaltending was so bad for four or five years that Oullette gets more credit than he would have if he was having this kind of season in 2008 or 2009. With that being said though, it's a relief not to expect the other team to score every team they get a shot on goal.

I don't think Cornell did bring their band. A UNH fan posted that Cornell's band was down there, and I think it was just a recording of their school song. It's now 1-1 with 13 minutes left in the game.

I could be wrong but I think Cornell's leveler was an own goal, that's what it looked like on the replay.

Maine's winning streak in the tournament halted at 2. Sounded like an exciting game and an incredible shootout which took nine rounds to determine a tournament champion. Both teams had many opportunities in regulation and OT to win but couldn't score.

Didn't have the time to watch the game today, but 1-0-1 in Florida looks like progress to me... Let's hope that the guys build on this weekend. (I think that they will.)

On video anyway, Princeton looked huge. And they weren't afraid to hit. EZAC has come a long way in the last 5 years.

No such thing as the EZAC anymore; that conference is at least as good as HE right now, and the same goes (more or less) for every conference across the country.

Every team needs to show up for every game right now; there are no easy-pickings to be had these days.

Any UPDATE'S on the injurys to Blaine Bryon vs Princeton and Brice O'Conner who did not return after the 1st period of last nights game vs Cornell..?

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 - Red Light District

I learned a little Maine history today. In 1854, the townspeople of Ellsworth, ME tarred and feathered the man who became the 1st President of Boston College.

Awesome. It would appear as though that's the same gentleman that John Bapst High School is named for, as their website states they were "named for a nineteenth-century Swiss Jesuit priest and missionary".

As a local boy (Brewer graduate) I always knew there was another reason I didn't like Bapst... :)

Well I don't know if 1-0-1 is progress since they were 2-0 the last 2 tourneys..;) But yes a win and a tie "on the road" so to speak is a good showing. Albeit a win against the 2nd worst team in the country....but a win is a win. I'd like to see them string a little unbeaten streak together to start the 2nd 1/2.

It's kind of amusing that Kimball Union incorrectly has John Bapst High School as "John Baptist" High School on Whitehead's bio.

"Prior to his position at Maine, Whitehead was the Head Coach at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and also served as an Assistant Coach at UMass Lowell, Maine, and Middlebury College. *Prior to that, he taught history and social studies at St Gregory The Great School in Hamilton, NJ and at John Baptist High School in Bangor, ME. Whitehead played professional hockey in Europe before starting his teaching & coaching career. *He earned his undergraduate degree at Hamilton College and his Master's degree in Education at the University of Maine, graduating*summa cum laude.*"

According to the PPH write up, Byron played vs. Cornell. Mentions an opportunity he had in the third period to score.
