Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I graduated from Maine in 92 (5 yr program...naturally) and owed 12K in student loans. The only help I received financially was a few hundred each semester in Pell grants. My 5 yrs were peanuts. Now looking at college for my kids, who are rapidly approaching that age, scares the living chit out of me. Even if they choose Maine. It's insane. I can't even imaging coming out of college with no job owing $150-250k.

Just to service the interest on $150K in student loans you're looking at $10K a year. Good luck paying much of the principal. The whole system is a joke and needs to be changed. Even though it is an issue I doubt there is much disagreement on I doubt any serious change will happen anytime soon. If nothing else at least the interest rate will be sorted soon though. It's ridiculous students are paying 400-500 bp's over the 10 year treasury.

It's pretty simple guys, college education isn't free and if you don't have the money for it part of the decision is weighing the advantages and disadvantages of loans and loan payments post graduation. You sound like a bunch of whiney democrats, get over it. My girlfriend went to Quinnipiac for four years and now has 80,000 in student debt. At the time her pretentious fmily thought Maine wasn't a viable option for someone of her caliber and now she's suffering the consequences of thinking New Haven alcoholism trumps Orono alcoholism. Not every system has to be changed because it doesn't favor poor people.

So if the next Einstein isn't from a family of means he should be contented with mopping the floors while the trust fund kid with a solid C average goes to Yale. Good plan.

Pfft... haven't you seen Good Will Hunting? Mop floors -> Solve unsolveable equation -> Get free education -> Throw it all away to follow some British chick to California.

Obviously, the poor can't be trusted to ruthlessly pursue profit and thus don't deserve an education.

I agree, it is pretty simple: the system is rigged. Do you even know what money is, or how it is created? Essentially the mercantile banking system is run by private families that have a worldwide monopoly on money creation and distribution. We have a monetary system that is fiat, not backed by anything, which means banks have the power to conjure money up out of thin air, and the "money" that they lend out appears as arbitrary digits on a computer screen that people have to pay back with compound interest through their labor (if they can find a job). Money is nothing more than the embodiment of your labor, and the artificial scarcity of money and the distribution of loans and the subsequent compound interest charged on money that appears out of nowhere means essentially that people are living through a more sophisticated form of slavery, and the name of the game is population control. Your ability to make money has nothing to do with natural selection because money itself is a con used to control every aspect of society. Right now the system is running the way it is intended to, and that is to lead the human lemmings off the cliff without them ever realizing that they're being directed every step of the way to their eventual demise.

Education isn't some luxury item like Allen's or scratch offs. Unless you want to be supporting people via welfare programs it's in everyone's interest to make sure people get a decent education and can support themselves so the government doesn't have to. It's not the poor who are getting squeezed by the current system, it's the upper middle class.

Former Merrimack president Richard Santagatti was being paid $700,000 by the college when you include benefits such as housing and vehicles. Ridiculous. Schools should be expensive enough for good schools to be worth more than not as good schools. I don't disagree with that, but these colleges that say they're not for profit and are just to educate young people then turn around and pay a college president such exorbitant amounts is hypocrisy at its finest.

I think we found FlagDude's little brother.

Merrimack released its schedule with only 32 games. They are playing 2 exhibitions to bring the total to 33. Maine may join them, Mankato, Army and others in playing less than the minimum.

Well, if a young 'un had the inclination to actually work, one can make a very nice living by learning a trade. Vocational high school plus on the job training. There will always be a job for plumbers, electricians, builders, specialty trades, etc, etc. Get paid for working while you learn, with zero college debt.

I agree the middle class is getting squeezed and I'm living it right now.

Schools push everyone towards college even when that kid will fail in college. Plumbers and electricians will always be in demand, same with HVAC guys. Welders can make 6 figures if they are willing to travel. Hard work but you can get 3 or 4 months a year off and still make that kind of money.

Hope they are good enough athletes to earn a schollie or are excellent students and get lots of financial aid. Either that or they might be in debt from graduation until the day they die. College loans can't even be discharged in bankruptcy. Friend of mine was tricky...she took every credit card she could and charged her education on them, then went into credit counseling and paid it all off in 4 years.

Seen this done as well, however this person filed bankruptcy and all credit card debt and non secure bank loans went away. Of course this was done a while back before the new bankruptcy laws went into effect. Suzie Orman recommended doing this on her show a while back as well.

Yeah, I have a hard time dredging up sympathy for the credit card companies.

My kid got a letter Saturday, unexpected 7500 in scholarship money. Still not even close to coming up with the cash needed for his first year. At this point it looks like 30,000 bucks out of pocket for 1st year:eek:

For resident tuition at Maine?

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Wow, that is all sorts of hardcore hillbilly. :D

Nikki, I grew-up in Frankfort (Germany), Texas and Tokyo... But my parents were from Maine and I couldn't wait to get back there to go to college.

Eat an eel sometime and maybe you'll figure it out.

Maine>>> Mass, no matter how you slice it.
