Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

Fixed you post... though I hear they are working towards having some residence halls in the near future. ..

Eta: kua is $50k for a boarding student and $30k for a day student

And to think NYA was "only" $4500 when I started there. Wonder how much St Mark's is now...it was $17K back in 1989 so I anticipate it's closer to an arm by now.

I paid $10K/year to go to college at Maine...unreal pricing.

BTW, USHR says Jay Leach has taken the assistant job at Maine.

I thought it was $9k in the early 90s, with many kids (particularly hockey players) getting the 50% discount]

It had risen to $8K when I graduated in 1991. I was lucky. Tuition was low enough that the town of Durham still paid half my tuition. Soon after I graduated they amended the law so they would pay the same amount to NYA (or any other school) they paid to send kids to Brunswick High. Almost every student at NYA receives some form of financial aid (or did in my day). Between the town of Durham and the financial aid package I got, my tuition was essentially free.

.

I graduated from Maine in 92 (5 yr program...naturally) and owed 12K in student loans. The only help I received financially was a few hundred each semester in Pell grants. My 5 yrs were peanuts. Now looking at college for my kids, who are rapidly approaching that age, scares the living chit out of me. Even if they choose Maine. It's insane. I can't even imaging coming out of college with no job owing $150-250k.

Hope they are good enough athletes to earn a schollie or are excellent students and get lots of financial aid. Either that or they might be in debt from graduation until the day they die. College loans can't even be discharged in bankruptcy. Friend of mine was tricky...she took every credit card she could and charged her education on them, then went into credit counseling and paid it all off in 4 years.

That's not being tricky, that's being fraudulent.

Embry Riddle with Flying is around 57,000. UNE in your backyard, is 53,000. I would assume Bates Colby Bowdoin are all around that

B-C-B are all well over $50k.

eta: bowdoin $58, bates $61, colby $59

that siad, i know Bowdoin is more than generous financial aid wise... i believe they have a unwritten policy that no kid will choose to go elsewhere because they cannot afford it... of course, one stroll through a campus parking lot and it's quite clear what the general demographic is....

I know a few people that went to Colby and it ended up being fairly reasonable because they were pushing to increase their number of Maine students. Their out of pocket cost wasn't much different than UMaine. However my sister wanted to go to Colby about 15 years ago and they expected my parent/sister to contribute 30K a year -- and this was before Colby was 60K (my parents were school teachers in a ritual district) -- they ended up convincing her to go to a public school so they could pay for it out of pocket instead of having to take out at least 20K per year.

Me, I took the cheap way and went to Maine. Had a full academic scholarship for one year (lost it after 1 cause my freshman GPA was too low). Parents paid Tuition out of pocket the other 3 years (finished in 4 years but had to take classes in the summer to do it). Graduated feeling very lucky to have no student loans.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

I went to Maine during the last Ice Age, worked throughout my time there, lived in various hovels in Stillwater and Old Town, ate eels from the Penobscot and whatever else I could kill locally for food (including woodchucks, they are in fact tasty little critters), got some academic scholarship money, and graduated owing less than 10K in a mere 9 semesters... Took me 10 years to settle-up, but it was the best time of my life, and worth every dime.

I have no idea how families manage to afford college anymore.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

My kid got a letter Saturday, unexpected 7500 in scholarship money. Still not even close to coming up with the cash needed for his first year. At this point it looks like 30,000 bucks out of pocket for 1st year:eek:

People afford college by taking on enormous loads of debt that they spend the rest of their life paying off. This year's graduates are the most indebted in history - replacing last year's graduates. The good news for them is they will only hold the title until next May when a new crop of grads take the banner.

On a hockey-related note, Clarkson is no longer in the Catamount Cup. That means either Penn State or Air Force is in and Clarkson is now available for two. If memory serves they still have a series the 3rd and 4th at Lowell. I can't check because I am on my phone.

Re: Maine Hockey 2013-2014 Part 1: Red Dawn

And the thing is, if you go to a Colby, Bates etc (and I'm not chitting on these schools) but you come out with some type of liberal arts degree owing an un godly amount of money and no chance in h e l l of getting a good paying job. The biggest benefit is the connections but usualy connections don't pay the bills. Looking back, the smartest thing to do, even tho I wouldn't trade my time at Orono for anything, is take ROTC, go in the military as an officer, put your 20 in, retire with full pension, benefits etc and then start another career. You'd only be 41, 42 and be double dipping for the rest of your life and be set financially, medically.
